Soon people in New Providence are up in arms for getting betrayed by Tempest and his crew.
Then Van Brugh who never liked Tempest beings in a ransom demand of ten thousand pounds from Dan Tempest. The committee votes to pay it, the locals are up in arms. They would rather fight than pay any money to him.
A glum Lt Edward Beamish strives to demand the ransom money but he plans to fight Tempest to the death.
Only when he arrives Beamish learns the truth. The ship was taken over by the Spaniard Don Ferdinand Esteban. His crew had imprisoned the Sultana's crew but Tempest escaped. He then learned how hated Tempest had become to the islanders.
Tempest vowed to free his crew and regain the Sultana from Esteban.
It was a surprise how little some of the loyal followers knew Tempest. Something he himself acknowledges when the islanders turn on him and placed a ransom.
