For 1964, relevant topic for today's world.

Warning: Spoilers
An episode about tranquilizers---a modern topic, in 60's black and white. MTM does a great job as she slowly becomes under the influence of a pill she borrowed from Millie. I always liked Rob's parents in this series. Tom Tuttle very folksy. I liked his line to his wife "You should be as 'funny' as she is.

Mixing pills and wine...a great idea!
planktonrules11 December 2023
When Sally comes into the office with a splitting headache, it prompts Rob to tell her and Buddy about the time Laura met her in-laws...and how taking someone's medication was a very BAD idea!

There's a flashback to Rob in his Army days. He and Laura recently married and neither sets of parents came to the wedding...and Rob's parents are coming to finally meet her. But Laura is VERY nervous...so nervous that she is convinced by Millie to take some of her pills. Unfortunately, when she has a bit to drink at dinner, Laura starts to act like a drunk...and Rob's parents think she's a drunk! Ultimately, she passes out and certainly has made a heck of an impression on them!

This is a cute episode and Mary Tyler Moore must have had fun playing such an over the top role. Not great but very good.

Mary Tyler Moore - TERRIFIC
Enrique-Sanchez-5620 December 2021
After 50+ years, Mary never fails to leave me on the floor laughing in this episode. Her performance was so delightful after Dick's parent's arrived for their first dinner together ...I can't say enough about her silly medicated state.

No question, she was the most perfect choice for this TV role. Her multi-talents served this series so well and contributed GREATLY to establish The DVD Show as an enduring classic.

Take care, Mary... wherever you are :)

Writing for your stars: predicting the majesty of MTM!
liparulos9 April 2024
At this point, the Dick Van Dyke Show knew what it had going for it. The writing could always come up with situations and concepts for comedy. The supporting cast was wide and deep and could sing and dance and make with the jokes. The leads were stellar, choreographing comedy in a way that created its own genre. Carl Reiner had taken the Show of Shows idea and evolved it into a new form of TV comedy, the half-hour sit-com with a variety show inside it. And Mary Tyler Moore was still ascendent, on her way to her own era of redefining TV comedy with the legendary Mary Tyler Moore Show. And man, oh, man did she have talent.

Here, you can see the set-up: find a new way to challenge MTM to embody comedy. Take a few pills, play off the challenge of the parents, get into some literally rolling-on-the-floor laugh-making. Good Lord but MTM was a robust comedian!

Spartacus Super Bowl says episodes like this are why so many people identify the Dick Van Dyke Show as a groundbreaker into a new era.

Thin material is stretched and over-worked for cheap laughs.
ronnybee211214 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was more annoying than it was funny,I really didn't like it. Laura practically has a nervous breakdown worrying and whining over an upcoming visit by Rob's parents. Before the parents arrive she takes a 'tranquilizer' to stay calm and later has wine with dinner which makes her act silly/goofy in front of the in-laws (!) That there is about 90% of the show contents, folks.

It's a thin story that is overworked.

If you can get past Laura's whining at the begining you might get a few chuckles out of the material that follows but it is nowhere near-enough to carry a whole episode of this almost always better tv-show.

Some viewers may like this episode more than I did,(and I do understand why someone might like it),but it just wasn't for me,I thought it was weak compared to almost all other episodes in this fine series. But,this is all just my opinion. See what YOU think, and let us know please !
