Good but disappointing

The show seems to have an axe to grind when it comes to the British. When talking about England in many episodes, frasier always speaks highly of the culture and history etc etc but almost every brit character on the show is a drunken lout. Other than that, this is an OK episode but once niles and daph had got together you could see the quality drop. A shame as there was so many avenues to explore but tried to keep to the same old same while always moving forward.. An impossible task.

One of the worst Frasier episodes

I agree with Hitcoc. Daphne's family coming to town is hard to watch, what with their rude behavior, drunkenness and smoking. This is one of my least favorite episodes, and dang, it's a two-parter even!

Premise is completely illogical

The whole idea that Frasier would have to fight the condo board over the complete loss of his "view" due to a neighbor hanging a flag or anything is preposterous. No condo association would allow such a thing to happen regardless of whether or not it was considered patriotic.

I also disliked this episode bc the mom and brother are such ill mannered miscreants, which was horrifying to the pont of no longer being humorous. I also don't find it even remotely believable that Frasier would allow 2 people to smoke in his home when they could just smoke on the balcony. I know in a previous episode he did allow Bibi to smoke in his apartment, but he felt that his entire career depended on getting her to quit so that plot point was a tad more plausible.

This episode was over the top to the point of being ridiculous. It's only saving grace was the opening sequence with Daphne, Niles and ROz.

Very poor episodes

Whenever Daphne's mother and brother are in episodes I switch off. They completely ruin the comedy by their over-acting. And the brother is particularly bad in playing a drunk - unrealistic - and his awful London cockney style accent which is as bad as Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins in the 1960s. That Daphne has a northern accent because she comes from Manchester yet her mother has a south of England accent which is different from her son's seems to have escaped the casting department. Very poor.

Warning: Spoilers
Once Daphne and Niles got together the writers didn't seem to really know what to do with the characters next.

So expanding on Daphne's family perhaps seemed like a good idea in terms of providing storylines. After all, they couldn't put Frasier with anyone longer term because without that there really was no show.

Unfortunately the 'British are coming' angle falls flat on its face, and doesn't provide anything overly funny. In fact the representation of Brits is actually in the Bert in 'Mary Poppins' category in terms of insulting.

Nothing really works here I'm afraid, despite the best efforts of the cast.

How Anthony LaPaglia won an Emmy for his performance here I don't know, but I suppose they viewed that as a 'success' and kept writing him in.

Daphne's Family: Need I Say More
Hitchcoc28 October 2019
Daphne's mother and brother come charging back and that's enough for me. The two of them are as unpleasant as can be and take over the lives of the regulars. Daphne is scared to upset her mother after she and Niles agreed to move in together. There is a secondary plot involving a feud between Frasier and his upstairs neighbor.
