Old Boyfriends (#7.13)

Warning: Spoilers
Rose gets a visit from her old boyfriend in St. Olaf whom she doesn't remember as she dated many guys. After some time she realizes that he is a guy she went out with to make Charlie jealous. And Sophia finds a guy through an ad but then finds out that a woman who is with him is his wife and not sister. She is dying and tries to find a replacement for herself.

A great episode. Loved the Sophia story. Such an interesting idea and actually made one think and see both sides which is not very common for a sitcom.

I liked how in Rose's story they didn't forget that she was a virgin and made an inconsistency with making her suddenly a slut.

A flashback to Mama's family.

Warning: Spoilers
The storyline involving Sophia and the couple played by Louis Guss and Betty Garrett is new, but the storyline involving Ken Berry seems to be close to a remake of the storyline from a few seasons before which guest starred Eddie Bracken, or possibly the one that guest starred Milo O'Shea. At first, Sophia thinks that Guss and Garrett are siblings, but as soon as revealed that something else is up, and Sophia must make a sacrifice for the sake of other people's happiness. Berry is an old date of White's from high school whom she doesn't remember until later, but that's not a really interesting story even if it does reunite Betty White and Ken Berry from "Mama's Family". Garrett, best known for her roles on "All in the Family" and "Laverne and Shirley", had started in the late 30s on the Broadway stage, and continued working up until her death. Guss, like another recent guest star Phil Leeds, had appear on practically every sitcom ever made. Their story truly is touching, with quiet Leeds barely smiling yet the dying Garrett full of life. When they wrap up this storyline, it is as touching as the episode where Sophia befriended the man suffering from Alzheimer's. Dorothy's advice is really profound, and it's one that requires kleenex.
