It's Yule Time on Tool Time once again, as Tim and Al show off some festive Binford stocking stuffers, like a small butane torch, torque wrench, flexible flashlight and of course, a bench vice. The latter being too big for an ordinary stocking, so Tim gets out a giant one, which he claims is one of Al's mom's hunting socks. It's at that moment that "Mrs. Borland" shows up. At home, the Taylor family begins to get into the spirit: Tim gets out his jumbo decorations to once again compete with Doc Johnson, Mark is going to be in the church pageant as the N in Noel, Randy ends up flirting with Doc Johnson's granddaughter and accidentally giving away his father's lighting strategy, and Brad wants to go skiing with the Wheelers the weekend of Christmas. Tim and Jill tell him it's out of the question, so he starts pouting like an infant. The night of the pageant comes and Brad refuses to go to church, and because of his bad attitude, they just go on without him. However, it doesn't feel like Christmas without the whole family together, so Tim sneaks out to go get their moody eldest boy.
Tim got home just in the nick of time, before Brad was preparing to go out skiing anyway, but instead of going with the Wheelers, he was going to hitchhike! So they sit and have a man to man talk. Brad wants to go skiing to be with people he likes, and Tim tells him that Christmas is about being with your family, not people you like. Eventually, I think their talk strikes a chord with the Taylor teen, and so he accompanies Tim back to church, which really does Jill's heart good, and then the pageant can commence... as soon as the letters get into the right position. After that, it's time for the lighting contest. Tim hopes to sway the judges, and it may work to his advantage, because the only judge this year is Wilson, but unfortunately, he's also a former patient of Doc Johnson. Tim's lighting display is fantastic, except he notices one of the reindeer's noses is in the wrong place and so he goes up to correct it, with predictable results. Wilson deems the winner, because the Taylors had a full-sized electric Tim on the roof.
Home Improvement had some of the best Christmas episodes, and this was definitely one of them. It brought back the subplot of Tim competing with Doc Johnson, and I find it odd that this was the theme every year except Season 6, and we never saw Doc Johnson appear on the show, and Christmastime is the only time the character is ever mentioned, so apparently Tim doesn't have a problem with him the other 11 months of the year. In addition to OCD lighting, we also get to see Brad at his brattiest, almost as bad as that episode where a cop brings him home. All part of growing up. Plenty of funny moments too, like Al's story about his parents buying an artificial tree, and of course, Leon. This one's got it where it counts, check it out this holiday season.
