We begin with Tim announcing that every show on the network, for one night, will be in 3D. Tool Time in 3D, as if the show wasn't scary enough in 2D. Al isn't very supportive of the idea, saying a "serious tool show" doesn't require another dimension. At home, Brad's girlfriend Angela has offered to not only do his laundry, but clean his room as well. Of course, Jill finds a problem with this, thinking Brad has made her his slave and completely overreacts. The boy says he didn't ask her to do these things, she volunteered. Doesn't make a difference though, as Jill drones on and on about the Feminist movement and how women have worked so hard to advance themselves and everything else we've heard about endlessly for 30 years. Then she goes and nags Tim about it and tries to get him to explain to the boys why women were not put on earth to serve men. She wants him to set a good example for the boys, and in so doing, he lets it slip how he finds his wife to be a control freak. Jill overhears and they bicker like children. Tim says guys are what they are and can't be changed. So there. Now let's go to the 3D Fool Time segment, and back when this first aired, these scenes were in 3D. However, for syndication and DVDs, they were flattened to 2D, making the following gags incredibly pointless and obnoxious.
Tim and Al build a picnic table, occasionally swinging things and pointing drills at the camera to demonstrate the "innovative" 3D effects. After the table is built, they sit down to a picnic, including a very long hot dog. Again, this would have worked had it really been in 3D. At home, maybe Wilson can offer Jill some words of wisdom, and I think she could use a whole set of encyclopedia's worth. Turns out, Wilson is in fact a feminist. Basically, he says with some tender loving care, anybody can be changed, even men. As for Brad and Angela, Tim overhears him asking her to make him a sandwich, and asks Tim if he wants her to make him one. The red flag shoots right up the pole. Looks like Jill was right. He brings Brad out to the garage for a man-to-man talk. Turns out Brad really IS clueless about how to view the opposite sex. They talk a bit, Tim lets his son know that relationships have to be equal, no one side can do all the work or be in charge all the time. So, with newfound lessons in how to treat a lady, Brad tells Angela he likes her for who she is and not what she does for him. Then Jill and Tim make amends, so now all is well, and we have time for one more 3D gag.
I remember the night this episode first aired. ABC was doing all their shows in the 3D gimmick, but here's where I felt left out: I didn't have the glasses because I didn't know where I was supposed to get them. As a result, I've never gotten to experience this episode in 3D. Small potatoes anyway as it has little to nothing to do with the plot. Okay, here's the rundown: yes, it was sexist of Brad to expect Angela to do things for him, but at the same time, Jill blew everything out of proportion and paraded her women's lib all over the house. This woman is SO annoying. This episode also marks the final appearance of Angela, and at the start of Season 7, she and Brad have broken up. I wonder if these events have something to do with what happened in this episode. Anyway, The Feminine Mistake is not a very enjoyable episode. Sure it's funny in some parts, but it's really annoying in others. And again, the 3D effects are compressed down to 2, so they no longer work. Just like home video releases of Jaws 3, except that movie sucked even in 3D. All in all, I recommend skipping this one.
