Singing Stars
hellraiser729 July 2021
This is another of my favorite episodes of the show number six in my book. This is also the beginning of the "Lubbock Babes" whom to me were one of the highlights of the show. But also seeing them all sing just showed that a "Jem and the Holograms" live action film in the 80's was possible.

This episode is truly unique because it was one of the very first musical episodes which weren't commonplace in sitcoms but TV in general, of course now we see these kinds of episodes pop up every once in a while in one show or another. This is also one of my favorite musical episodes as it's one done right.

What makes this musical episode still stand out is because of its down to Earth approach. Most of ones we have now are usual both the story and song cutting in and being part of the story, but here it's all taking place in reality where they just use the simple formula of a group of girls having big dreams together and then taking action to make them come true; yeah, simple but effective.

There is some good comedy to be had, most notably Marie it's just funny how reluctant she is throughout the whole escapade, but she just slowly but surely loosens up and goes with it because deep down whether she admits it or not she really is enjoying it.

When she is singing without her glasses and she moves or faces the wrong direction, I'll admit it was nice seeing Heather without the specs once more. But my favorite was how she reacts when Cindy tells her she could be in a just say no commercial, Marie's face is just lit it and it would make sense being in a PSA (Public Service Announcement) would be one of Marie's big dreams.

And another is from Connie whom in slight fury grabs Marie and tells her not to sabotage her dreams of Broadway, which I'll admit surprised me never knew she was a fan of theater and Broadway though she is highly intellectual so it makes sense.

But of course, it was hearing the Lubbock Babes sing, and it's was surprising because all of the actresses really are capable singers, though it was really Jamie Luner/Cindy whom was the most talented.

There are a lot of memorable songs consisting of oldies but goodies. From the beginning which was "Rock Around the Clock." However my favorites are the solos, Marie whom did "Unchain my Heart", Cindy singing "Somewhere between Life and Love" which was just beautiful.

And finally, "Sweeney Todd" from Connie which was also great and funny as that's the most unusual choice for a night club but it makes sense for the character as Connie is a person that beats to a different drummer and a fan of Broadway. Just seeing her sing and perform the song shows she's truly capable of making it there but I really like the look of her with that hair style sort of made her like actress "Helena Bottom Carter" which is ironic considering she was in the movie.

The Lubbock Babes make beautiful music.

Rating: 4 stars.
