Marie's Way
hellraiser722 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Warning don't read unless seen episode.

This is my favorite episode of the show of all time, it's a different kind of episode because here it's mainly a drama. This was also kind of the payoff to their revolving plotline of Marie becoming a nun. Also, this episode was sadly one of the last great one's for this show.

What's interesting is other than an episode on Marie, it's also about the mom. We get a few flashbacks on both Marie and her, their time together. It's interesting because we bet depth on but this drives in the point on the theme about our past desires conflicting over desires from the present.

The fine difference in what we think we want and what we really want in life. But also, simply about mother and daughter bonds and keeping them strong and close.

The flashbacks also tell a little something about both characters, how the mom had certain set ideals for herself and Marie. However, as time went on, she has changed significantly as she's became a little more open minded and most of those things she use to believe before have no weight now.

But also, that Marie hasn't been the happiest camper, I always felt there was a certain sadness that resided in the character. Were not totally sure why but from some of the flashbacks and throughout most of her life there are lots of reasons.

I feel that's actually true about most people that are introverted, how most introverts have endured the greatest amount of pain but don't show it because they don't want to display what may be deemed as weakness and constantly shield themselves for anyone that wants to take advantage of it. But it's not weakness, the people the deem one's psychological pain and take advantage are the ones that are weak.

From this we are able to conclude that this isn't what she really desires at all, it's only a desire that was set in her mind but not her heart. Personally I feel Marie wants to live out life and see and explore all it has to offer, she wants to be herself, she wants to do what feels good and right, and also she want to love and be loved.

It comes down to the pivotal moment when Marie gets out of the car ready to open the convent door. I remember thinking "Marie, wait don't do this, this is a mistake." And from that rain pouring down with a flash of lighting, I can tell even God doesn't want this for her.

Really like the final moment which were touching and the best Marie and mom moment when we see the mom to the right thing as she gets out of the car and tries one last time to reason Marie out of the mistake she's making. Really like Marie's reaction as she's confused, angry and really sad." But it's also really touching just showing a mother's love for her daughter and that is true sanctuary for every son and daughter.

Rating: 4 stars.

The Best Episode
caspian197817 December 2021
Having watched this episode when it premiered in 1989 when I was 11 years old, I was eagerly intrigued to watch it again now at the age of 43. Just the Ten of Us was a great series for me not only as a young Catholic, but a young boy becoming a teenager. The story of a catholic family starting a new life on the west coast while their teenage children grow into adolescence was perfect for my demographic. Not only was in a perfect ABC Friday night lineup for young kids, it was also a turning point for young boys to watch and admire the Lubbock Babes. Such, the premise of this show went from a Goofy family comedy to a comedy with eye candy made up of 4 teenage daughters that covered all spectrum of girls that would appeal to a male teenage audience. The good Catholic girl, the bimbo, the bad blonde and the tom boy gave the audience a full menu to choose from. In the end, very few of these character developed in the three seasons when it aired. However, this episode stands out not only creatively but with great character development from Marie. And Deborah. Both show growth in their characters while the rest of the family does not evolve. With the Catholic faith is still on display with the family values and morals, it is this episode that showcased the uniqueness the series had. Deserving of more seasons, the show was sadly canceled after this season ended in 1990. The series and especially this episode was a marvel for its time.
