Sensationist Pitfall
hellraiser710 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Warning do not read unless seen episode.

This is another of my favorite episodes of the show and its part one in the one and only two parter this show ever had. It's also one of the darkest episodes ever as it deals with the issue of Sensationism, the ugly nature of it but also how fame is not without a price to pay.

Connie in a way is the villain but the tragedy is she's unaware or doesn't want to be aware of it. I honestly do get her pursuit in that but every other reporter that works for her paper and any other do the same thing, so yeah Connie you're not special in this, join the club.

But the thing about the news is it's not a popularity contest, it's what it's supposed to be about reporting the truth and nothing but it. Sure, it may not always be a big event you're reporting but the truth is the truth and that's the nature of it and also just part of what life is in general.

Connie unfortunately forgets this which was her fatal mistake when she gets and uses unreliable and incomplete information, a source that is also unreliable and ethically compromised, and information that was legally confidential, all in her desperate pursuit to be on the front page.

Despite the instant fame she gained the results are damaging as everyone around her is paying dire prices, as we see the dominos start to come down, from most of the students pulled out which would be hell for Wendy as most of the male populous is gone. Though also for J. R. it was funny how at first seemed like a sweet deal for him but of course reality crashed down once he realizes even the female populous is also decreasing; yeah, not a good deal for either. But this is only the beginning as things get a lot worse.

It kind of sad how Connie is unlikeable in this episode but that's the point. One moment which was kind of funny but at the same time teeth gritting was seeing Connie exercise defiance when she imitates her own father with a southern accent (probably unintentionally on that part) on what he would say to her. At that moment I couldn't help but feel "yeah, you don't need help from Graham or me" as we see she does a good job making a total fool of herself in the moment which not just sums up what she's been the whole time, but it shows how consumed by her own ego she's let herself become.

There are two memorable comedic moments that are just comedy gold but also have two of my favorite quotes ever. From Marie giving a negative cheer to Connie but also there is a moment when Marie presents a monologue on ethic believe despite two dimensional in the standpoint of any religion you practice, she's somewhat correct. Connie of course doesn't agree which shows how much the spotlight has blinded her sense of ethics. Marie summons Elizabeth and she just says a quote that is both clever and funny at the same time but most of all powerful which really brought on a big cheer even from me, at that moment I though "yeah Connie serves you right!"

But of course, near the end of the episode we come to a sad moment. Graham he then has a talk down with Father Hargis but then Hargis he turns around and we see tears in his eyes. I really felt bad for Father Hargis, you can tell the dilemma he's dealing with is killing him and from how bad things have gotten he has to make some hard choices despite not wanting to make them.

The last things he says are sad, from the facts he lays about the new Miata he was driving, and certain other things and he says on sad quote, "Would you of believed me, if I did?" Personally, I would because it's the truth, let alone I know him as he's a good man. What Hargis confesses really shows the nature of the truth that it's not what we want it to be, it is what it is, another thing Connie has clearly forgotten.

But then Hargis lays down another truth which really hurts as it's not just affecting the status of the school but Graham's career and home. I'll admit hearing this was just heart sinking and what made it more heart sinking was it was all caused in the name of Fame which is a soulless deity.

As an old saying goes "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions." Connie has taken one big step on that road and it's going to go downhill from there.

Rating: 4 stars.
