Unlikely Right Guy
hellraiser719 July 2021
This is another of my favorite episodes of the show, it's sort of this show doing "Valley Girl" as the premise is slightly similar.

This is a Marie centered episode which is cool as she's, my favorite. We see Marie going to the school dance but unfortunately, she's just luckless in love as most of the male populace in the school does ask or want to dance with her. From how hot Marie is makes me wonder what is wrong with the guys in this school.

But anyway, we see that her luck is finally about to change, or on another perspective she's always been lucky it just wasn't in the way she expected. She meets up with this boy Russell who of course is played by Michael Stoyanov best known as Tony from the TV show "Blossom". We see that this guy is in the same fix as Marie as he is luckless in love but is also just as much a geek as Marie.

I really like the interaction between both which I thought was sweet, we see both of them are having a good time and interact well together. This to me was also a change of pace in the show, even thought I do see one or two of the sisters with a guy I never seen them genuinely interact with them as most of the guys are just the typical BFs of the week.

I really like Russell because of the fact he's not the typical BF of the week but is an actual character; he's a guy I can actually relate to as he's on the shy side, a geek, an underdog all qualities I have.

But also, that he's not a person totally concerned about looks as we see he's aware he's not going to make the cover of "Teen Magazine" but he doesn't care (when you think about it who even remembers the past issues of them anyway) he's a person that just wants to have a good time and do his own thing.

It's too bad he never became a supporting character on the show, it would be interesting seeing for once one the Lubick sisters have a relationship; it probably would've happened had the show had more seasons.

One cool and funny moment was when we see the sisters have arranged a meeting with Marie and one of the jocks at the dance. Once Marie meets him, she then delivers an angry and funny retort and slams the door on his face. I thought "yeah, way to go Marie", it's just a perfect payoff as that guy was a real jerk to her in the dance by slamming her with a nasty remark well you can say it was his turn to be slammed.

As much as I love Marie's sisters they're not always right and when it comes to guys and love they really should start setting their sights and standards higher. I know they think their helping their sister but there is such a thing as doing more harm than good. They all also have one thing in common, none of them have any boyfriends at least not any real ones, which is even more reason why Marie shouldn't listen to them because they don't know jack squat about love and relationships, sorry that sounds harsh but it's true.

There is a really touching moment when Marie gets some advice from her mother about her love life woes and the mom tells some of her story about how she met Graham and how he wasn't much to look at as a teen but yet both connected, and this connection of course became something much more.

This resides on two of the themes in the episode about not caring what other people think, but only what you think and feel. Also that true love is never something that is concerned about looks, only that two people have good character and that both have strong feelings for each other.

It's true sometimes there are some guys and girls that can look really beautiful outside and yet totally uninteresting; in a way they're like a nice looking sports car but doesn't work well because it's missing key essential parts to make it go up to speed.

Guys like Russell to me you can say are like that car Travolta fixed up from "Grease" that don't look like much aren't well polished but once it has all the right parts and the care it turned out to be a systematic, automatic...well you know how the rest of the song goes.

You never recognize love until it recognizes you.
