THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF Wyatt Earp – "Bill Thompson Gives In" - 1955 This is the third episode of the 1955 to 1961 western series, THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF WYTAT Earp. The series stars Hugh O'Brian as the famous lawman.
In this episode, O'Brian is still trying to arrest, Denver Pyle and his half-crazy brother, Hal Baylor. Baylor is wanted for murder while Pyle is wanted for a jailbreak. The pair are hiding in a stretch of country known as, "bushwhacker territory." O'Brian is not keen on following them into the area. Even with a posse, O'Brian figures that the bandits could evade him as well as bump off some of the posse.
The townsfolk want action on the brothers, but O'Brian stands his ground. Nobody chases them into that killing ground.
O'Brian does though, have an idea. He contacts two Native scouts he knew from his army days. He is sure the two natives, Rico Alaniz and Rod Redwing, will be able to sneak into the area. They are to report back when then have established the brother's, Pyle and Baylor's hideout. He also has the two scouts leave pieces of rope, tied in a hangman's knot where the brothers will find them.
The rope bit rattles the two gunmen, especially, the not quite right in the head, Baylor The native scouts report back to O'Brian on the brother's location. The Marshal saddles up and rides out. When he gets close, he calls out to Pyle for a meeting. "Just a talk, no guns, and no attempt at arrest." Pyle agrees to the meet.
O'Brian tells Pyle he needs to turn in his brother. "You know he is not right in the head. He needs help. I promise he will not be hanged for killing the former town Marshall." He also tells Pyle that he needs to clear his own name. Pyle responds to O'Brian that he will mull over the idea, but makes no promises. They shake and O'Brian rides back to Ellsworth. There, O'Brian finds that the town council wants to replace him. If he is too frightened to go after the brothers, then they will hire someone else.
Jaws drop when O'Brian nods towards the edge of town. There is Pyle leading his brother, Baylor, in. Pyle knows his brother is slowly going insane. Maybe if he is locked up, it will stop him from killing again, or being killed.
The cast also includes, Alan Mason Dinehart, Kem Dibbs, Richard Travis and Ray Jones.
The direction was again by, veteran b-film helmsman, Frank McDonald. (B/W)
