I Don't Play Anymore
BugisStreetAnnie3 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I remember Mackenzie Phillips talking about this part when she was once on a daytime talk show. What I remember was her saying they weren't sure which way they wanted to go with the character and they first chose Peggy Lee to play the part of the transsexual. I hadn't seen the episode at that time but I wondered exactly who Peggy Lee would play since she was too old to be Gopher's college roommate, like Mackenzie was. The only thing I can guess is they were going to make Peggy Lee, Gopher's college football coach who had a sex-change instead of his roommate. That would've been good if they had gone that way.

The problem with Mackenzie is she was too feminine with a small bone structure like a female to really have been Gopher's former football buddy. Her backstory would have had to have been more like Jazz Jennings today where she started puberty blockers to transition at around 13 to have looked that much like a female at 27. The football player angle was ridiculous because you could never see Mackenzie passing for a male football player.

For it's time the story was very much ahead of the curve. I still wish they would have gone with Peggy Lee because you might actually believe she was a former man.

The piano man

Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching The Love Boat on a regular basis, week after week, along with Fantasy Island. Anyway, this episode is one I remember because it featured a pianist who overcame his arthritis to make one more grand performance for love.

The Love Boat should be rebooted again please. I nominated acclaimed British actor Danny Dyer to play the captain.

Some Things are Not Possible

Warning: Spoilers
'We're not gonna mingle. We're just gonna talk.' In season five, we're seeing that Julie has less and less to do. Joanna Cassidy is a shrinking, investigating whether Dick Shawn is really nuts. She suspects he's faking it to get disability. Donna Pescow is a humble maid. (Maybe she's still looking for Tony Manero.) I tell you what, Donna can barge into my cabin without knocking anytime. James MacArthur is a pianist with crippled hands. Mr. Stockwell wants him to play. He's willing to pay 5k. Of course, he can't do it. I feel sorry for him already. Oh wait, I'm not supposed to feel sorry for him. He's suppose to get over it and realize that he still has value as a person. He does not, however, have value as a pianist. I also don't have any value as a pianist. Maybe Doc can help our pianist put on one last performance. Mackenzie Phillips is back. Gopher thinks he recognizes her. Who is she really? Wow. This one was ahead of its time. Early propaganda for this kind of thing. (I wonder how Phillips felt about this casting.) I tell you, I always enjoy Dick Shawn. On Kafka's Love Boat Scale, this episode gets 3 * out of a possible 4 *.
