Here is a topic that nearly every successful sitcom tackles sometime during the run. The problem is that it's never interesting in any sitcom, nor is it interesting in this episode of 'McHale's Navy'. The only thing different from so many others is- that this show actually had an amusing ending. The ending saved this episode from being one of the poorest in the entire series run of the program.
Parker gets a book about hypnotism and proceeds in swaying anything shiny into people's faces to try to get them under the power. Parker is trying to put a crew member under hypnosis and actually places Captain Binghamton under the power while he was watching from afar.
McHale has been trying to get Binghamton to let them put on a skit show to benefit an orphanage but the Captain has refused. But under Parker's spell, the Captain now agrees to the show and even wants to be one of the headliners. With a Senator coming to the base to inspect the Captain, it may not be pretty.

It is so unbelievable and uninteresting that it took away from the show. The only thing that saved the show from being an all-out clunker was the way the program came to an end.
