What Past Says about the Future
tomasmmc-771985 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Three weeks passed since last episode, which means that Bailey spent that time in rehab. Also, in that time, Claudia spent more time with Todd, Julia with Adam, while Justin decided to elope to Las Vegas with Laura. But most important, Charlie returned to manage the restaurant, and with Kirsten they took care of Owen, like in the good old times. Bailey is in the last stage of rehab and a fellow patient, Oliver, is upset because Bailey is not as bad as he was in season 3, he just had a slip up (actually, was more than a slip up, 3 weeks of hidden drinking). He is released and returns home, only to find Will who now is dating a new girl, Meredith. Will offers to stay but Bailey says he'll just crash and allows him go to his date. He is left alone on the stairs of the house, in a similar way than Charlie in 3x12. The next morning, Will takes Holly to visit him: seemingly Will told her Bailey's story with alcohol and all the tragedy he has been through. Now she is compassive and kind to him, but Bailey still apologizes for going drunk to her place before and feels not he's not ok. The doctor in rehab can't help him, and in one moment, he stops Oliver from swallowing pills in overdose. Later, he goes to check up on Oliver in the park next to rehab to see if he was lobotomized, and turns out he wasn't, he says "God, I wish they would" (what a reference to certain movie of the 70s). Oliver finally tells Bailey what is his problem: he has a "disease", they love crisis and are in the cavalry rush: he is a saver, he always wants to "give 911 rescue", just as Oliver is a victim and wants to be rescued. So Bailey realizes this and when Charlie visits him at the house, crying tells him this: he always solves problems and helps people in trouble, so without that, he is nothing. He says that his best was when Charlie got sick, he took over the restaurant and then the house. And that is partially truth, he was with Jill, Annie, Evie, Sarah (because she was adopted and felt lonely), Tracy (who needed someone given her unhappy marriage), Callie, all women who needed help. Besides he took over the restaurant because someone had to, he took Owen because he felt the kid needed him, Bailey is a rescuer somehow (Jill said this in Who Cares). Charlie doesn't know how to comfort him so the next day, he takes Owen to see him. The kid tells him that he wrote him some letters of get well and says that his sisters and Charlie tried to help him with his assignments but no one was as good as him. Owen missed Bailey the whole season and that's why this scene was great. Overall, Bailey's story here was perfect and emotional, even the scenes in rehab had something special. Oliver had an excellent part, and the actor, Keith did a good job. It would have been excellent to see another episode with Bailey in rehab. And the scene when Bailey crying tells Charlie which is his problem, was amazing, Scott made the scene heartfelt.

Then, seems that the past chases Kirsten when she is disturbed by a depressed girl, Lizzie, in her job. The mother, Mrs Newman, wants to pulls her daughter out of the study because she is not getting better, and refuses to eat or go to school. Kirsten tells her that Lizzie's weight is in the protocol which upsets the mother. She questions if she understands what her daughter is going through and Kirsten takes a moment to sob. Is enough to remember all those sad moments in early season 3 to feel touched in this scene. Then, Kirsten allows Mrs Newman to pull Lizzie out of the study, as they don't know if she is getting the drug, nefazodone, but they know is not working. She starts to feel depressed too, and doesn't go to work the next day, staying in bed like in the past. While telling Owen to hurry up for school, Charlie sees his wife in bed and gets worried because she usually always goes to work. She explains what's happening in the drug trials and that's not working, that before didn't use to get her but lately has been affecting her. He recalls she has been well for so long and that she went off her antidepressants during IVF treatments (she still takes the pills), but she assures it's just the job, feeling upset and frustrated because the drugs are not helping the kids. The next day, her boss, Dr McCarthy, questions her decision towards the Newmans, but she defends herself and the patient girl. He tells that she had depressed patients like Lizzie before, that they had this conversation, the kids are in study so thousands can be healed. She thinks Lizzie is different but he wonders if she's. He says that last week she fought with the prescribing MD, that she has been absent calling in sick, so he questions what's going on. Then, feeling that she might be sick again, she goes alone to the doctor and then returns home. When Charlie is back from Bailey's meltdown, in the couch, she tells him that she wasn't depressed, just "swimming in hormones", and that she is pregnant. He's a little stunned and asks "our own", "we did it?", she confirms, and he obviously happy, she crying of joy, they hug. He knows how much it means to them (I never forget Falsies), he finally is having a child with the love of his life. This was a wonderful and sweet scene, Kirsten's dreams finally came true, and is one of the most happy moments of all the series. All what she suffered, her depression, losing Charlie, Claudia and Owen, and now, 5 months after getting married with the man she always loved, she is pregnant with their child. This part of the episode was perfect too, excellent and like all the moments that deals with Kirsten's depression, was really touching. To praise Paula's work here once again, her character is part of the best of the series. I wish there were more scenes of Kirsten at her job, it would have added more drama and some ways to deal with depression, the different causes and the solutions. About that, pregnant women with BD II, like Kirsten, have some risks of relapse on depression and also have to control her dosage of lithium with the doctor but still in most of the cases things turn out well.

As for the rest, Julia, Claudia and Todd travel to Las Vegas after Justin emails Julia about the eloping. Adam chases Julia and express his feelings with a curious speech. Justin visits her at the hotel room and tells her his doubts. He says that he loves her, that he always have, but that he loves Laura too. Still, he wonders if he should marry, take a leap of faith with her instead of Laura. So, considering what she said 2 episodes ago, he asks her how she feels, if she still loves him. She says she doesn't know so he leaves, somehow saddened. Later, she decides not to stop Justin's wedding and chooses Adam. For me this was a bad choice, but probably was too late to break up Justin and Laura, she should have stopped them in Fear and Loathing. Anyway, I don't like what happened, as the future shows, Adam won't be the guy for Julia. At the same time, Claudia finally starts a relationship with Todd, when he says he was afraid to make a move because what Derek did to her. She kissed him this time, telling that she wants that. Claudia lost her past fears, good for her, Todd seems a nice guy so far. Besides, their scenes today were a little funny. To finish, Charlie is having trust problems with Joe, and has to divide his day between taking Owen to school, and picking him up (he even calls Victor to do this one time he couldn't), managing the restaurant and the factory. Joe helps him with the restaurant but Charlie is cold towards him and doesn't let him handle money or the accountant. When Joe complains saying that he sold everything he had (car, condo, his value stuff), Charlie tells that he feels betrayed because he trusted him. Joe feels that if he will act this way and not forgive him or trust him again he'll leave and disappear, and Charlie doesn't care (bad move, Charlie). But fortunately, Bailey's breakdown and Kirsten's news make him realize that he can't throw away more than 20 years of knowing Joe, he is family and they need him, so in the house, he apologizes and asks him to stay and manage the restaurant again. It would have been unfair if Charlie pushed Joe away because he was the one who gave him the job as bartender when he needed it. Joe came through for him and I think he only made 2 mistakes with Charlie: not clearing his mind on his wedding day (Nicolas would have done that for his son) and marrying Franny in one of the saddest moments of Charlie's life. But still, he did a lot for him and the family so he didn't deserve the mistreat. Anyway, in the final scene, the six Salingers, Joe, plus Will, share a family dinner in Tuesday. Charlie happily sits next to his wife and Claudia, then Julia and Owen, Bailey who arrives last, Will and Joe. A final detail to add, I highlight a glimpse for the future: Kirsten and Owen didn't share a scene together (his voice was heard before Charlie talked to Kirsten, but nothing else), but today and in the last few weeks, he lived where he truly belongs, with his adoptive parents, Charlie and Kirsten (check In Loco Parentis or Falsies). And Owen will live with them since season 6 finale, so was nice to see it, at least in one scene. I wonder why Owen didn't ask for Kirsten's help for his assignments, surely she would have been perfect for it considering her experience, much more than Julia, Claudia or Charlie.

Blast from the Past (#6.16)

Warning: Spoilers
Everyone thinks Bailey is fine but he is far from it. Charlie has trouble trusting Joe. Julia goes to Vegas to Justin's wedding and Todd and Claudia come as well.

Nice episode. Bailey's crisis is very well portrayed. Although In don't see why he doesn't want to manage the restaurant anymore. It is not that people asked him to do it, he really wanted it. But maybe he will get back when he feels better again.

I was sure Kirsten is falling into depression again but luckily it is actually the opposite, She is pregnant! The scene were she tells it to Charlie was pretty great.

And so it seems that Julia won't be with Justin anymore. Too bad but maybe it is for the best.
