THE REBEL "Yellow Hair" 1959
This is the third episode of the 1959-61 western series, THE REBEL. The series ran for 76 episodes and starred Nick Adams as a former Confederate soldier who wanders the west.
Johnny Yuma, played by Nick Adams, is camped out for the night when a lone rider approaches. The man, Richard Farnsworth, is a battered and bloody US Army trooper. He collapses to the ground in front of Adams, whispers, "Fort Concho", and then dies.
Fort Concho is an Army fort not far from where Adams is camped. He saddles up and heads off to pay the fort a visit. He finds the fort abandoned except for one man, Royal Dano. Dano is dressed in rags and blathering on about the Kiowa killing everyone except him. Adams decides that the man is coward who had hid during the attack. He is acting crazy because the Kiowa believe insane people are holy.
Adams decides it is time to be on his way but is gobbled up by the Kiowa. He is told by the Chief, Rodolfo Acosta, that he well be killed after a round of torture. One of the braves, Perry Lopez, is most keen to practice some slice and dice. One of the Kiowa women, a white woman (Carol Nugent)who had been captured as a girl, tells Adams that he can still live. He must make a challenge against the brave, Lopez.
Adams, not wanting to die, of course issues said challenge. The two men are tied together and must fight for a knife placed into a pole. There is a nasty tooth and nail fight with both Adams and Lopez getting worked over. Adams manages to finally get the upper hand and puts Lopez down. Adams is granted his freedom and the Kiowa leave taking Dano with them.
The episode was again directed by Irvin Kershner. Kershner was best known for the feature films, , STAKEOUT ON DOPE STREET, HOODLUM PRIEST, FACE IN THE RAIN, THE FLIM-FLAM MAN, RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE, THE EYES OF LAURA MARS and of course, STAR WARS: EPISODE V- THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.
Carol Nugent was married to series lead, Nick Adams. They were together till Adams' death at age 36 in 1968.
Interesting to see stuntman turned actor, Richard Farnsworth in anything. The man started out doing stunts and ended up being twice nominated for acting Oscars.
