A great episode and a sign of things to come
eric-356-79072712 October 2023
This episode may have been the first sign that this show could be evergreen. Chevy Chase had left the show a few episodes back and John Belushi had to miss this episode due to a leg injury which wasn't even mentioned until Weekend Update. But a fresh mustachioed face joined the show. His name was Billy Murray.

Bill Murray had already been in two sketches by the time Weekend Update rolled around, but was not included in the credits. The show, for the first time of many years to come, utilized the weekly fake news segment as an introduction to a new cast member. Jane Curtin continued to struggle as Weekend Update host, but muddled through.

In addition, we were introduced to of Saturday Night's first recurring sketches, The Coneheads. Andy Kaufman debuted his Elvis impersonation. George Benson wowed with two fantastic songs (and appeared as a pastor in Bill Murray's first sketch).

On top of all of that, Ralph Nader proved to be a surprisingly apt host. It's a shame the show didn't trust him to play more characters instead of just playing himself.

This episode really felt like the first time Gilda Radner truly got to shine. The weekly Gary Weis film is probably the best he ever did.

All in all, this was a fantastic episode and a sign of things to come.

Borring Bill Murray & Andy Kaufman
Johnny_West31 October 2021
The first episode featuring the incredibly boring Bill Murray. Blank stare, monotone voice, Bill Murray brings nothing to everything. The only thing that made his presence shine was that the insanely over-rated Andy Kaufman was also on the show, banging the bongos while he occasionally shouted.

For everyone who remembers the horrible appearances of Andy Kaufman on SNL, he created a gigantic void whenever he was on the show to shout remarks and bang his bongos. He thought that was cutting edge comedy. I thought it was crap.
