Surprises, surprises
owlaurence13 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
First, I've got to say that any episode which has Vala in it has my vote. She has a way of shaking things up that is absolutely thrilling. After her dramatic disappearance months ago, she waltzes in, makes Daniel look like a fool, sits down and literally flattens SGC with a series of bombshells which even SG1 has trouble stomaching. You've got to give it to the girl: she puts spice in your everyday life.

Most of the episode is taken up by Vala's story, with a few interruptions by SG1 in just the right places. I don't know where the plot is going with that mysterious baby thing. The Harcesis arc a few years ago completely petered out, so that one had better be solid, especially considering the obvious connections it makes. Here I'll just say that the episode superbly avoids looking too closely at those connections, and Teal'c remark about Darth Vader had me choking with laughter (I actually had to rewind, I had missed a whole minute).

Considering the sheer weight of Vala's news, I almost forgot about the subplot involving Landry and the IOA delegation --mostly because, let's face it, we've already gone down that road several too many times. Politics, SGC closing despite imminent threat, blackmail, negotiations, etc. It would all be rather boring it not for two facts: one, for once there was some buildup to this (remember Scourge?); two, the Russians getting their own ship will have consequences very soon. And on a personal aside, I like it that the show periodically remembers that, no matter how skillful and well-meaning, the de facto appropriation of the Stargate by the US is completely illegitimate.

The Ori Fleet
claudio_carvalho24 February 2022
While waiting for a meeting with Colonel Chekov and Shen Xiaoyi from China, Daniel Jackson's body is used by Vala Mal Dora to make contact with the SG Command through an Ancient communication device. She explains that she was found by a sweet crippled man called Tomin.in a world ruled by the Ori. She tells that the town where she is living is building starships and providing warriors for the Ori invasion. Out of the blue, she gets pregnant without sexual intercourse and decides to marry Tomin before he notes. Vala is accused of being and unbeliever by a man called Seevis and chained in a square but after three days, Tomin rescues her. But soon she learns that Seevies is the leader of a revolutionary anti-Ori group that plans to destroy the starships. Vala also discloses that the Ori are building a supergate.

"Crusade" is a good episode of "Stargate SG-1" with the return of Vala Mal Dora. Her journey in the Ori planet is funny and entertaining and her pregnancy a mystery. Unfortunately the participation of Michael Ironside is short. My vote is eight.

Out of body

Loved the narration in this episode, it had emotional depth and was surprisingly compelling. Acting from the whole was good and the concept well developed.

It Could Have Been a Contender
fcabanski6 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If this episode had proceeded linearly, it would have been excellent. But because it was mainly told in flashback, it became only a little better than mediocre.

Flashback removes mystery and drama. As Vala told her tale, it was clear the sabotage failed. Otherwise, the Ori invasion fleet would not be coming. When the end is known, the story loses a lot of punch.

The B plot of the Chinese conspiring with the Russians to take over the stargate program is meaningless. It turns out the Russians really just want an Odyssey class space vessel. It feels like filler. Yawn.

Michael Ironside is wasted as a quickly dispatched resistance leader. He would have been better in the series as the leader of the Lucien Alliance.

Overall Vala's story and the impending Ori crusade is a strong set up. But the flashback format ruins the story.

Doesn't age well

While I get them wanting to play it for laughs that Mala is trapped in Daniel's body, the implication that it's bad/wrong for him to be attracted to Col. Mitchell is pretty offensive. Granted, I get how Mitchell would be surprised since Daniel had been purely hetero up to this point and had a wife, buy as anyone call tell you, that doesn't mean a thing, and sexuality is a sliding scale. All the had to do was (like in "Seinfeld") just add in a throw away line like, "Not that there's anything wrong with that." Instead, when it appears Daniel is ogling him (not naked, I might add), Mitchell just says, "is there something I should know?"

Maybe I'm nitpicking, I just think TV has a certain responsibility. So many kids are informed of their self worth through TV (how the characters with whom they identify are treated), I would just hate for it to have a negative impact on anyone.
