After the demise of Victoria Wood: As Seen On TV.
Victoria Wood went on the mainstream BBC1 with a series called Victoria Wood. It was a series of 6 individual comedy playlets.
The first one had Victoria accompanying her friend Lill to a health farm.
Lill is hoping to lose weight in the hope that the man she has been having an affair with a number of years will leave his wife.
The health farm is now run by Nicola (Julie Walters) who is all at sea. Judy keeps everything strict and everyone starving. Dana, an assistant is a large gobby lady and she is the only one having a fun time.
Victoria Wood rode the health fad of the 1980s. It was when aerobics took off aided by Jane Fonda's Workout.
Unfortunately the first edition was a bit flat as it sought to fight the flab. One thing noticeable was that Victoria plays a secondary role. Almost the straight woman.
It means other characters had to step into the breach. Julie Walters is a hoot. There are several glamorous older ladies who use the health farm as a little break and a chance to gossip.
By Victoria Wood's high standards of her previous BBC work, this opener was decidedly average.
