Toby the Enigma
Sonatine9725 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One of my favourite TWW episodes, not least for Toby's emotionally unravelling after the death of his brother.

I have always had a love/hate relationship with the Toby character. Quite often than not he is rude, arrogant, belligerent, needy and self-righteous. But there are times when he shows his genuine human side, his vulnerabilities, doubts and weaknesses. And this episode underlines the latter facets perfectly.

I did think the "fight" between Josh and Toby in the latter's office was a little too over cooked, but I guess there are times when Toby can wind people up to the extent where they just can't help themselves and blow up in an expression of vented frustration/anger.

Nevertheless, Richard Schiff does an outstanding job here, not least for showing us how deeply complex the Toby character really is.

Got any of those White House M&Ms?

Warning: Spoilers
The campaigns make a stop in Washington. Toby's sick brother has committed suicide. Josh has a hard time getting into the White House, and his conflicts with Toby come to blows, over a dark horse candidate (Mel Harris - THIRTYSOMETHING) stealing Santos' thunder. Many people who never got into WEST WING claim the dialogue was too fast, and this is the only time i ever agreed with them; it took more than one viewing to figure out exactly who Harris is. But a verrrry funny episode - that Cahn magic is back. Shoring up the evaporating staff at the White House, C.J. hires Cliff Calley (Mark Feuerstein - ROYAL PAINS). He's condescending, and funnier than ever. Charlie tries to set up Kate with a guy from his gym who was asking about her. Her flip-flopping is hysterical, then she realizes the fellow is her ex, and that Charlie misunderstood the inquiry.

A piece of great TV

One of the best The West Wing episodes ever. Unusual arty direction, for example the scene by Will and Kate at the gala, and deepest inquiry into Toby's character yet. Very moving dialogue with CJ, for example, masterly acted by Richard Schiff. Also, all his scenes with a lady in the bar are perfect. Director Alex Graves and R. Schiff, supported by all the others involved, made of this episode an example of great TV.
