Evil Cannibals?
reb-warrior25 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Xena and Gabrielle go to meet Virgil and his friend Hosep. Only to find them missing. They were running from cannibals, and have been have captured by them. Now the cannibals are after Xena and Gabrielle.

Poor Hosep. Don't eat while watching this. Just saying...

The cannibals are evil, base, animals. It's not even because they are starving that they do it, or, that they eat their enemies. I mean, Virgil and Hosep were minding their own business at a campsite. The cannibals have tons of actual food such as fruits, vegetables, and water. They even have horses they could eat. They could probably fish given their proximity to the water. But it seems they have developed a taste for humans. And they perhaps enjoy hunting anyone not part of their group. They appear to be all men. They just grunt to talk. Perhaps a lost group of toddlers now grown? A Lord of the Flies thing. They've grown up to be monsters.

Speaking of monsters, that seems like that is what this was. A monster of the week episode. Which Xena never had. That was Hercules. There's just an A to B thing here. In fact, it's so bad that Xena and Gabrielle spend the entire time talking about the plot of the previous episode, Legacy, and how Gabrielle made a mistake and killed Kora. Now she's reluctant to fight and almost gets killed when she hesitates and a cannibal stabs her in the leg. She was visualizing the cannibal as Kora. This seems similar to the situation in season one, The Prodigal. So here again, Gabrielle must overcome her fears about fighting. It's also a little similar to when Xena killed a boy soldier in Remember Nothing. And similar in some aspects to The Price. Only this time Xena really does "kill em all." Without consequence, more justified, and no outrage from Gabs. Anyway, it just seemed like, we've been here before. They barely talked about the cannibals and the current situation. Lol.

I did love all the booby traps Xena set up. Again, reminded me of a previous episode, One Against an Army. They even had Xena telling an injured(again) Gabrielle to "do it now." As in cutting the line so the dam would break and water, logs, and rocks would come crashing down on the cannibals. In One Against an Army, it was a kettle of hot oil. Again, we've been here before. Tho, I did enjoy seeing Xena set it all up. I also enjoyed seeing her taunt the cannibals when she was luring them in.

I did enjoy Xena and Gabrielle's closeness in this episode.

Rubio was amusing.

This was Virgil's last episode. He never really caught on as a compelling, or interesting, or funny character for me. He was just kind of there. By comparison, at least Joxer added to the comedic element of the show. And his friendship with Xena and Gabrielle rang true to heart.

Well, Gabrielle overcame her fear of fighting. Again. Xena got to kill em all. Virgil will never look at a roast the same again. And life goes on. 7/10.
