Candle in the dark
capodicapi2124 March 2008
Well the Direction was okay, given the potency of the movie. Cinematography was horrid, having allowed flawed lighting in shot movements. The art direction was simple. It dealt with themes of religion. There were I feel undertones of black and white view points. It is a generic horror film. The dialogue had an overabundance of clichés and the shots did little to acquaint the viewer with the characters surroundings. However, this film was not bad given the fact that Poche is a novice film maker. I am a fan of B movies because they are so darned corny and funny, and this one fits the bill. It's 35 minutes of hell.

Decent movie...
KobraPower1 February 2008
Pretty decent short film. The technical aspect was not great, some bad sound here and there, but for the budget, it is watchable. Obviously you cannot expect a hit when movies are shot with a low budget and with a skeleton crew(which I'm sure this movie had). The acting was pretty decent overall, and the story was good as well. I liked the Goth(so to speak) girl and the main actress was also pretty good. I did like the end when the guy being interrogated turns out to be a very significant character in the movie(do not wanna spoil it). The movie is about 40 minutes long, so that is a plus because usually movies like this that are too long are hard to watch all the way through.

BAD. (Decent for a Z-Grade Movie)
blai011221 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
For a Z-Grade movie, this is all right. The acting is better than in a good number of films of this type, and it certainly manages to create mild suspense, (especially in the opening scene). It was a good idea to keep it short; many Z movies try to draw out the story WAY too much, and it turns out terribly.

That being said, this is not a good movie and it deserves nothing more than one or two stars. The acting is awful; the dialog is amateurish; the camera work is atrocious; etc. (It is not good enough to fall into the "so bad it's good" category, if that is any indication).

Thus, I certainly wouldn't recommend this movie unless Z movies are your thing.

Okay, okay! If ...

If ... You took a group of talented University students, none of whom were studying anything related to cinematography, and gave them the stuff they needed to make a grade B movie ... This is what you'd get. Is it a bad movie? No. Is it amateurish? Yes, very. But that doesn't make it bad. Several of the people who worked on it actually show promise. Given inexperience coupled with talent it is actually a good movie, for the kind of movie that it is. Short, sweet, well done when you take into consideration the obvious lack of experience, with a good plot twist or two. Its that sort of movie that you think of as good because it shows an underlying vein of promise. Vampires, underlying vein ... You get the picture.

Better Than You Would Think!

"A Candle in the Dark" is a short movie about predatory vampires on a college campus killing off students. This movie is part of the "Decrepit Crypt of Nightmares" movie pack. The whole collection is filled with these alternative b-movie cinema productions that started in the nineties and apparently continues until today.

I must say that I really enjoyed this short movie. There is much Hollywood product that I would not have invested the time. The key to enjoying these films is to keep in mind that the makers have a minute fraction of the resources of a Hollywood production. I gave it a 7 out of 10, which is better than I would have given many Hollywood produced movies!

"You Don't Have A Prayer!"...

Sarah gets a new housemate named Lilith, who dresses only in black and goes out only at night. Could she be connected to the recent string of murders in the area?

A CANDLE IN THE DARK is an extremely low -microscopic- budget film. Even at 40 minutes in length it tends to drag on. The filmmakers do attempt to make things interesting with different camera angles and a semi-spooky villain.

Unfortunately, it's just not very exciting or intriguing, although the "shock" finale is okay. There's also a fun little vampire history lesson included...
