This weekend Replay Events, one of the UK’s premier gaming and event entertainment companies and the driving force behind Play Expo Blackpool And Manchester (both events that team Nerdly have attended in the past), added another Northern event to their roster: Play Expo Leeds, an all-day gaming celebration taking place which took place at Leeds United Football Club’s Centenary Pavillion on Sunday April 16th.
Of course the Play Expo events are all about playing games: be it pinball, arcade games or consoles, be they retro or modern. There are plenty of items to buy too – gamers can stock up on retro games, consoles and all sorts of collectables. Many from local vendors (a great way to get your name out there in the community for sure). But the focus of Play Expo’s is most definitely on games.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
American Pastoral (Ewan McGregor)
If my limited experience with Philip Roth adaptations is any indication, his novels deal in emotion. There are existential crises concerning identity involved, each a character study about life’s impact beyond the surface experiences propelling them forward. This isn’t something easily translated from page to screen when so much consists of internalized motivation. You must really look into the text, ignoring plot to...

Deadpool (Tim Miller)
As Hollywood struggles to reinvent their array of superheroes with each iteration, it’s no surprise that audiences would become hungry for something off the beaten path. While it’s not the first post-modern comic-book adaptation, Deadpool is billed as ushering in a new direction: a fan-spurred, self-aware tentpole that’s R-rated to its core, featuring a wise-ass character (don’t call him...

Say what you will about Michael Moore — as if it hasn’t already been said, and not at all from a single side of the two-party battle line — but the man knows how to fashion viewpoints and distribution methods into a fine point. Six years after Capitalism: A Love Story, the documentarian brings Where to Invade Next, a feature that will first play as thoroughly familiar to any of us who can envision his work at the drop of a hat. Give this a bit of time, though, and it becomes clear that he’s found a way to expand his interests. At play here is a multi-part (some would say shotgun-spray) outline that combines the common Moore question (what is a particular American system doing wrong?) with a query about how — not if, and only in a certain sense why — other countries are doing it better. Rather than the standard procession of interviews,...

Israeli vs. Israeli terrorist drama is a timely, thrilling provocation
The opening scene of Israeli writer-director Nadav Lapid’s subversive, original terrorist drama Policeman is a precise snapshot of nationalistic delusion. A group of macho cops are pushing one another’s limits on a demanding bike training ride. They stop at a highway overlook for a breather. Lined up in a muscle-bound, spandex-ed row, they gaze out at an open landscape near Jerusalem: dullish brown, desiccated, dead. With prideful awe, the leader intones, “This is the most beautiful country in the world.”
The leader is Yaron (Yiftach Klein is well-cast as a doer, not a thinker), one of the movie’s dual protagonists, a member of an elite Israeli counter-terrorist squad. The first half of Policeman takes an almost ethnographic approach to following Yaron’s daily life. At work, he hides in the backseat of a car and shoots an...

Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a new adaptation of one of the greatest works of classic literature, Homer’s The Odyssey with a sci-fi spin.
Therefore, the studio recently hired a young screenwriter James Dilapo to pen a sci-fi version of the story with the hope of launching a new franchise as well. Dilapo recently earned a spot on the 2012 Black List for his screenplay Devil’s At Play.
The Odyssey, in part, a sequel to the Iliad is the second half of Homer’s epic poem about the Trojan War. The journey of Odysseus from Troy to Ithaca takes ten years — the same amount of time that the Trojan War itself lasted.
The film was first announced back in 2008 and Brad Pitt was originally attached to star with George Miller (Mad Max) attached as director. The one of two major ancient Greek epic poems would actually work great as...

As soon as it was announced that John Cusack was to play Edgar Allan Poe, I was rather giddy. This piece of casting seemed rather perfect, with a great talent portraying another great talent, that’s a win/win right? Well not if something isn’t quite right, and the Edgar Allan Poe conceived from the screenplay by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shaekspeare and director James McTeigue seems more in tune with a character that Nicolas Cage might play, overly loud and eccentric to the point of unconvincing and laughable. It is disappointing that this Poe was so over the top; it isn’t something that suits Cusack or his talents. Rather than a more historical Poe, a truly tortured soul we got something else. I admit at times Poe was more subdued, and this was when the character was at his best. The...

Hulk Was Supremely Interested In A Panel Entitled “The Character Of Music.” Aside From The Fact That It Was Populated By A Number Of Vastly Talented Composers And Their Equally Talented Cinematic Collaborators, It Seemed Like A Rather Promising Place For An In Depth Discussion About The Power Of Music And The Subtleties Of Its Artistic Application.
Instead Hulk Got A Comic-con Panel.
Okay Wow That Sounds Harsh. That’S Really Not How Hulk Means It. In Fact, That Statement Is Not Meant To Deride The Panel At All. The Truth Is The Panel Was Rather Funny, Good-natured, Full Of Great Anecdotes,...

Obsession is a funny thing. In love, it can lead to heartbreak and despair. But in other ways, it can be a positive force, such as a country’s obsession with putting a man on the moon, or in finding a cure for cancer. In the French film Queen At Play (Joueuse), one woman’s obsession results in a wonderfully rich character study.
Helene is a seemingly ordinary woman living an ordinary life. She works two jobs as a maid to support her modest home and family, a pleasant if somewhat dull husband and slightly spoiled teenage daughter. For Helene, every day is the same: monotonous and unexciting. Then, one day at work she enters a room to do her housekeeping chores and, to her surprise, finds the couple renting the room out on the balcony. At first, they are unaware of her, and she has...
