In addition to teasing a small band of journalists Thursday with footage from the upcoming Inside Out, Pixar Animation Studios revealed that the short film programmed to play in front of Pete Docter.s feature next year will be titled Lava. and they shared that gorgeous poster above to help set the stage. James Ford Murphy, the head of animation of Pixar, helms this short after logging time as an animator on A Bug.s Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Ratatouille and many more Pixar features. Murphy has been toiling in the Cars universe for Pixar as of late, serving as supervising animator on the spinoff short Mater and the Ghostlight. He also supervised the animation on this brilliant short, still one of Pixar.s best. What.s Lava about? Monsters University managed a strangely subtle debut for a Pixar film, earning neither the high praise of most of their works, nor the backlash of Cars 2. Instead, the film was met with medium reviews, a lot of happy kids, and a very curious feeling of nostalgia for characters that aren’t actually all that old.
By the way, check out our Monster University podcast review for an expanded take on the film itself.
Our favorite monsters are back, but this time Mike Wazowski and Sully are headed to school, and we enter the picture before they’ve even met. Going back to a time when our best buds and co-workers don’t know each other, and are very different monsters, means the doors are wide open to introduce new characters, new parts of the universe, and we have a lot of options for figuring out just how they ended...

Fans of Disney•Pixar’s feature films love to scour the screen in search of the Hidden Gems the filmmakers sneak into each film: Wall•E’s explorations uncover a Mike Wazowski antenna ball, paying homage to Monsters, Inc., and in Up, the classic Luxo Jr. ball can be seen in the girl’s bedroom as Carl Fredricksen’s house flies by her window.
Disney•Pixar’s Monsters University features a few such gems, three of which are revealed here:
A113 – The School of Scaring classroom number is A113, which refers to the former classroom of John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter and Andrew Stanton at CalArts. The number makes an appearance in every Pixar feature film.
Pizza Planet – The Pizza Planet truck is in the driveway of the Jox fraternity house when Mike is riding Archie the Scare Pig down Greek Row. The Pizza Planet truck, which first made an appearance in “Toy Story,...

This past weekend, everyone was all about seeing Mike Wazowski and John P. Sullivan reunite in Pixar's animated prequel Monsters University. But the road to getting the film together had a bit of a rough beginning. Since the film takes place before the events of Monsters Inc., the characters voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman were made to look a little younger, and the two actors were able to catch a glimpse of their redesigned characters before signing on. However, the new look for Crystal's little green guy didn't really meet his standards despite scaring the daylights out of kids and Goodman himself. Watch it! Here's the Monsters University inspired sketch from College Humor: Pixar's Monsters University is being directed by Dan Scanlon, who went from animator to storyboard artist to writer to co-director on Mater and the Ghostlight, making his feature directorial debut. This is a prequel...

A few weeks ago, Wamg attended a special press conference for Disney•Pixar’s frighteningly fun “Monsters Univerity,” featuring Billy Crystal and John Goodman. The pair have an incredible chemistry, and were quick on their feet as press members asked them questions about their Mu days. Check it out below!
Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (Mu). But during his first semester at Mu, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters,...

We hold Pixar to an unfairly high standard. It's a blessing and a curse, but it comes with the territory when you deliver such greats as Wall-e, the Toy Story franchise, Finding Nemo, Up and Ratatouille (a film that has grown on me more and more since first seeing it). It's a sign of the greatness they achieved with their first ten films, but it's an impossible trend to maintain. With Cars 2 and Brave the animation studio that Toy Story built has never seen such a lull in quality. Unfortunately, Monsters University doesn't return them to their exalted stature. This is a film that would be even more disappointing had it not been for the memories of the much admired original. As is, it plays like a passable diversion, continuing to hammer home those core Pixar values -- friendship and teamwork -- but just assumes our connection with the characters carries over from Monsters,...

This is another edition of Short Starts, where we present a weekly short film(s) from the start of a filmmaker or actor’s career. Dan Scanlon has worked at Pixar for almost twelve years (he started the day before 9/11), and it’s taken this long for him to direct his first solo effort for the studio, Monsters University. Actually, though, that’s not a very long time to wait, especially considering he’s the youngest person there to helm a feature (he turns 37 two days after the movie hits theaters). Prior to this, he co-directed the 2006 Cars short Mater and the Ghostlight with John Lasseter and had been a storyboard artist on Cars, Toy Story 3 and Disney DVD sequels The Little Mermaid II and 101 Dalmatians II and was on the senior creative team for Brave. In 2009, Scanlon put out his award-winning feature debut, a non-Pixar-based live-action mockumentary he stars in titled Tracy, which...

Apparently Disney-Pixar doesn't know the meaning of the word "final." Back in April, the new Monsters University trailer hyping the Scare Games was touted as the final trailer. But earlier this month a short new trailer showed up, and the music of Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia was included, so that was fine. Well, now we're here with the second "final" trailer, but this is called the "final exam" trailer, showing Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) studying their hearts out in college. Pixar’s return to the world of monsters this summer is pretty much guaranteed to be a big hit, among newcomers to the franchise and old fans alike. It’s one we’ve been waiting for for a while now, and Monsters University has definitely been shaping up nicely in the past year or so.
The studio recently announced that they will continue their tradition of opening their latest animated hit in the UK at the Edinburgh International Film Festival as the Family Gala, where it is sure to go down a treat amongst festivalgoers. And with just under a month to go before its release on the other side of the Atlantic, the first clip has debuted over at Yahoo Movies, giving us a great little look at the banter we can expect between future best friends, Mike and Sulley.

Continuing its long standing tradition of unveiling the latest Disney•Pixar titles weeks before their UK releases, this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival will play host to Monsters University.
The film, which is a prequel to Monsters, Inc., will act as the festival’s Family Gala, and is scheduled to screen at the Festival Theatre on Sunday June 23, with a special schools screening taking place the next day.
Directed by Dan Scanlon (Cars), Monsters University examines the relationship between Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley (John Goodman) during their days at university, when they weren’t necessarily the best of friends.
Joining Crystal and Goodman on the voice cast are Helen Mirren (Red), Steve Buscemi (Fargo), Aubrey Plaza (Safety Not Guaranteed), Nathan Fillion (Slither) and John Krasinski (It’s Complicated).
The 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival runs from June 19 – 30, and will be bookended by Breathe In and Not Another Happy Ending.

After taking home the Best Animated Film Oscar at the start of the year for Brave, Pixar return to the big screen this summer with their first ever prequel, Monsters University.
Going back to the college days of our beloved Mike and Sulley, the film is naturally sure to be a strong contender in the same category early next year.
We’ve seen plenty of brilliant things from the animated blockbuster already, with the first full-length trailer landing two and a half months ago. And with its release now less than two months away, the studio have debuted another terrific new trailer, courtesy of Yahoo Movies.
Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences...

The latest poster for Pixar's Monsters University features Mike Wazowksi at the center of a college prank, by being duct taped to a wall. Sulley is obviously going to have a lot of fun picking on Mike before they end up becoming the best of friends.
The full movie was screened at CinemaCon earlier this week, and the people who have seen it have nothing but good things to say about it. I loved the first movie, and from the sound of it this prequel is just as entertaining and heartfelt.
The movie hits theaters on June 21st, 2013, and it stars Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray, and Peter Sohn. To check out all of our Monsters University news click here.

Check out the awesome new trailer that Disney-Pixar has just released for Monsters University, in Japanese. As I do not speak Japanese, I had to focus on the visuals, no problem. The animation is so crisp. I’m mad excited to see this movie.
If you haven’t seen the insanely detailed Monsters University website. Click here.
I’ve been wondering what role Sulley’s archnemesis Randall would play in the film. Is he the main antagonist in this film too? Or just a minor bully? He appears at 2:02 in the trailer, racing Sulley down a football field.
I wasn’t sure how they would make a prequel to Monsters Inc. but they Pixar is creative enough to build a story around their characters when there doesn’t appear to be one.

You might not understand what's being said in this new international trailer for Monster University because it's all in Japanese, but it's easy to pick out some of the new story elements revealed in the film through the new footage it contains. It basically shows us more of the deeper, emotional side of the movie that will mostly center on Mike Wazowski's character. It features Mike as a little kid taking a field trip to Monsters Inc. which basically inspired him to go to Monsters University, which leads him to his job at Monsters Inc. This is actually a really great trailer, I hope you like it!

This week Disney/Pixar released a new poster to promote Monsters University, the upcoming prequel to Monsters, Inc.. You can see it in full below.
Monsters University is due in theatres on June 21. Dan Scanlon (Cars, Mater and the Ghostlight, Tracy) directed. Read on for the official synopsis:
Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (Mu). Disney has released a new international poster for Pixar's Monsters University featuring the full cast of the film. I'm excited about this prequel! It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. The question is... do you think it could be better than Monsters Inc.?
The movie hits theaters on June 21st, 2013, and it stars Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Dave Foley, Julia Sweeney, Joel Murray, and Peter Sohn. Here's the most recent trailer for the movie!
Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. “Monsters University” unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. Screaming with laughter and fun, “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”) and produced by Kori Rae (“Up,...

Disney Pixar have just sent over this rather lovely new poster for Monsters University. The poster shows off what must be most if not all of the cast in the sequel(or more accurately prequel) to the hugely popular movie Monsters, Inc. which amazingly was our 12 years ago!
Billy Crystal and John Goodman return to voice the two main characters Sully and Mike and are joined by Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Charlie Day, Joel Murray, Dave Foley, Sean Hayes, Julia Sweeney, and Peter Sohn with Dan Scanlon at the directing helm.
Monsters University will be with us in the UK July 12th.

This summer’s highly anticipated prequel, Monsters University, will be taking us back to the college days of Mike Wazowski and Sulley, and naturally there’s a lot to look forward to with that basic premise.
The first full-length trailer landed earlier in the month, giving us a longer look at some of the great new characters coming our way in a few months’ time. And now Disney have released a new set of character posters, introducing us to each in a bit more detail.
