The Man Who Loved Duck Fighting

Warning: Spoilers
Another of the episodes of this long forgotten (and unseen series). This episode took place in India around 1913, so it is actually not a Victorian murder but a "late Georgian" killing or killings.

It seems that in 1912 a Mrs. Augusta Fullam was residing in India with her husband Edward. Soon they became very friendly with A Dr. Lt. Harry Clark (here played by Edward De Souza) and his wife Kate. both Edward Fullam and Kate Clark were remarkably dense people (or willfully blind) for Augusta Fullam and Dr. Clark were becoming lovers.

The Doctor's chief occupation (when not taking care of the soldiers in the town, or attending to Augusta - or his own wife) was to bet large sums of money on a particular gambling institution in India at the time: Duck fighting. It was like the more familiar Cock Fighting in Latin America. The American criminologist, Edmund Pearson, discussed the case in one of his books studying old crimes, and he said that it did not improve the Lt.'s reputation with him (Pearson) to hear that he enjoyed watching such agreeable birds kill each other.

Soon Edward Fullam became ill, and was treated by his good friend Dr. Clark (with assistance from Augusta). As you can guess he died. The irony of the situation here is that had the guilty pair just been patient they would never have been caught. They should have done the same to Mrs. Clarke. Instead, the poor woman was attacked by some unknown men and killed.

It was supposedly a robbery murder, but some evidence did not make sense - like a lack of evidence that the motive was a robbery. Instead, the police had luck in finding the men who attacked Mrs. Clarke. These men quickly explained how they were paid to do so by the Lieutenant and Mrs. Fullam. And this lead the authorities to disinter the late Edward Fullam, and discover he was poisoned.

Augusta was smart enough (to the Lieutenant's astonishment) to declare she'd been forced into the scheme by the Lieutenant. He acted with restraint, just denying his involvement and the statement of the natives. Both were found guilty (as were the natives) and sentenced to death, but Mrs. Fullam had her sentenced reduced to life imprisonment. Dr. Lt. Harry Clark was hanged in 1912. Within a year Augusta Fullam died of heat stroke in the prison she now resided in.
