Very touching and illuminating look into some very special women of the Navajo nation. It is a beautiful thing to see this new generation balance their ancestral values and culture with a dominant pop culture that includes laptops, mobile phones and the ubiquitous video camera. The Navajo language is beautiful the listen to. It is a shame that those who took so much from these people could not even see fit to leave their language alone. It is my hope all of the indigenous people of the world rise up in the 21st Century to reclaim their birthrights. This is not a slick film, but the subject matter does not call for slick movie-making. The women tell their stories in subtle and profound ways. The viewer can sense the tension they live when trying to reconcile their own identity in a dominant society that tells them to be someone else.

This movie would be best on T.V.

Warning: Spoilers
Although I just finished watching this short documentary on the big screen, I feel this movie is more fit for a T.V. audience. I can't see people paying money to see this film. There were parts that were well done, such as the part where the girls voice narrates portions of the Navajo myths on creation, etc. But most of the film was amateurish, even for a documentary. I can't really slam a film that gives some insight into the lives of modern day Navajo people, but then I can't overlook the flaws either. I really didn't feel like I knew the real people in the film any better than I did before the film started. I thought the giggling girl interactions between the contestants was interesting, although much of that was filmed on the girls own home camera and it was hard to hear everything being said. I guess the moral of the movie is supposed to be that when a cultures language dies, that culture dies. If that supposition is correct, then the Navajo tribe is in trouble based on how much these girls could speak the language. Semi-interesting film, but not one I would likely go out of my way to watch again.
I wondered what happened to Crystal

I loved the film and became curious what Crystal ended up doing later in life. Turns out she is a literal rocket scientist, working in aerospace and publishing papers about satellites. I recommend the film not only to learn more about the Diné culture but also just to spend some time with a quietly inspirational person.
