Pram Jam
JoeytheBrit3 August 2009
In terms of cinematic endeavour and inspiration this film gets a big fat zero thanks to the fact that the camera is simply plonked down on the side of the road and films whatever happens to walk past. The subject matter is fairly interesting - or, at least it's varied. We see lots of kids, some dressed as soldiers other in Oriental costume, most of them accompanied by their mothers or the family nanny. There's also a parade of babies, as the title suggests or, more accurately, babies prams. If the film teaches us nothing else it proves that excessive zeal and bad taste are not an invention of the modern age: I swear that one of the prams is decked out as a five-foot tree. God only knows how traumatised the poor little mite in that one must have been...

Annual Baby Parade

Annual Baby Parade, 1904, Asbury Park, N.J. (1904)

If you go back to the late 1890s and the early 1900s then you'll notice that various parades were filmed by the movie studios and released to the public. People would pay their dimes to watch these parades. I guess they were handy in case you weren't able to attend or perhaps people would pay to see if they could spot themselves. Usually these films lasted for a few seconds but they started to get much longer as time went on and this one here clocked in at four minutes. Obviously the title tells you what to expect as we see a parade with kids from all ages. We see some older ones dressed as police. Girls walking down the street with their baby dolls. There really aren't too many babies to be seen but if you're interested in costumes and various things from 1904 you'll be entertained.
