Two "Big D's," Dallas and Detroit, are the scenes of these two crime stories. Both stories wind up with the police describing them as "sad."
In Dallas, a couple men walking in the park discover a dead body about 5:30 p.m. They run and flag down two officers. The victim is 23-year-old Charles Vasquez, a construction worker who lived in a nearby town. He's been shot six times, and it appears his body had been dragged to the spot where it lay now. Police guess the man had been dead 12-24 hours. Detective Randy Loboda is the first man in charge but soon he gives way to Det. Eddie Ibarra.
After several people are interviewed, such as the deceased girl friend, the police still don't who or why the man was shot. One name leads to another to another until finally, some guy - the least of the villains in here - tells the truth.
In Detroit, shots ring out in a residential neighborhood around 9 p.m. Two men were shot while in their truck and they are rushed to the hospital. One dies en route and the other is in critical conditional Like many cases, it isn't solved right away but Detective John Morrell optimistically puts it, "Once you get a good lead, it all falls like dominoes."
We also learn that suspects tend to open up more when a female cop is interrogating them. We also discover that a 61-year-old man who was well-liked in the neighborhood, apparently snapped and shot these guys. It claims it was self-defense, although police find 30 rifles in his house. It's a strange, sad world sometimes. This was an interesting case with a lot of things I didn't mention here.
