Director Frank Henenlotter is a cult horror legend. But after making the cult classics Basket Case, Brain Damage, Basket Case 2, Frankenhooker and finally, Basket Case 3, he disappeared. After 17 years in 2008, he returned and made another film, the black comedy (kinda) body horror Bad Biology. And now, almost another 17 years later again, Bad Biology is getting a 4K Uhd release from Severin Films.
Bad Biology, like the director’s previous work, is not a movie you’ll easily forget:
Driven by biological excess, a man and a woman search for sexual fulfilment, unaware of each other’s existence. Unfortunately, they eventually meet, and the bonding of these two very unusual human beings ends in a god awful love story.
That description only scratches the...

One of the quintessential drive in kinda guys to me is Frank Henenlotter. Not only because of the anointing from the patron saint of Drive-ins himself, Joe Bob Briggs, but also just from a horror core memory. Long before I knew about the fabled 42nd Street in New York and all the magical movies that were shown there, I was introduced to Belial and his brother Duane on grainy VHS from Video Unlimited. That’s the magical part about being a horror fan. My brothers weren’t even particularly fond of the first movie, but knew it was an important piece of independent horror cinema. Shot for 35,000 and released in April of 1982, Basket Case is now enshrined in Moma,...

Toronto punks Dilly Dally bid farewell to storied local Diy space, Coffin Factory Studios, in a new live video featuring their tracks “Sober Motel” and “Bad Biology.”

When I think of cult filmmakers, one of the first names to burst from my brainpan is Frank Henenlotter. From Basket Case (1982) to Bad Biology (2008), his horror films are always loaded with qualities that elude mainstream appeal, such as bizarre humor, over the top gore, and a crazy circus geek aesthetic that almost dares you to look away. Speaking of splattering cranium matter, his second feature length film, Brain Damage (1988) checks off all the Henenboxes and even one more – a trenchant social message about addiction (if you want it).
Produced by Palisades Partners and given a limited release in April, Brain Damage was Henenlotter’s long awaited follow up to Basket Case; well, long awaited at least for horror fans of that legendary micro budget wonder. While the ultra low budget of that gem gave it a unique and gritty charm, Brain Damage’s considerably deeper pockets allowed Henenlotter to...

Though the beloved cult filmmaker Frank Henenlotter is best known for his work on films like "Basket Case" and "Frankenhooker," he's turned his gaze from shock horror/comedy to art-infused thriller with his newest effort "Chasing Bansky." A while back, when we released the 400th episode of the Sound On Sight podcast, a few close friends and longtime listeners requested we compile a list of our favorite shows we recorded over the years. Now that the podcast has officially come to an end, I decided to finally set aside some time in my schedule and give them what they want. Initially, I set out to pick ten, but after 500 recordings and 8 long years, it was simply too hard to choose so few, so I opted for 20 instead. In selecting these episodes, I tried to show the wide range of genres we covered over the years, including Spaghetti Westerns, Italian Horror, Southern Gothic, underground cult, family friendly, foreign language and even Hollywood classics. We’ve been blessed with several guest hosts and interviews with many filmmakers including genre legends George A. Romero and John Landis, to name a few.

Fantaspoa programmed Frank Henenlotter's entire filmography in order to pay homage to this cult American director. Henenlotter himself was in Porto Alegre for a couple of days, presenting both Bad Biology and Brain Damage. I attended the screening of the latter, which happened just hours before Henenlotter took a plane back home. "Just to have people coming to see an old film is meaningful", said the director. "But to see that people still like my films is just unbelievable", added Henenlotter while introducing Brain Damage to an always-cheerful Brazilian audience. For someone like me who had never seen before Brain Damage, this introduction indicated we were in for a really fun time. "I see a lot of technical mistakes in the film but I think it really...

My love of Basket Case didn’t officially occur until its sequel – when the deformed brother of Duane Bradley (Kevin VanHentenryck), Belial, finally met the “girl” of his dreams. However, the original Basket Case has a lot to offer, and I’ve chosen it for the second installment of Terror Tapes because for many of us, Basket Case (directed by Frank Henelotter) was the reason we fell in love with horror in the first place. You probably have memories of walking into the video store, stepping into the horror section and falling in love with the font on the video cover, dripping with blood, and a horrendous face peeking out from inside a basket. That was the Media Home VHS box. Or perhaps your video store carried the Palace Version VHS with Duane on the cover, carrying the basket, with some of the sleaziest signs from New York’s 42nd Street in the background.

On September 27, 2011, the cult film classic Basket Case (1982) (review here), about the weird relationship between two brothers, finally comes to Blu-ray. Lovingly restored and supervised by Director Frank Henenlotter himself, the new Blu-ray boasts the film’s best version since it was first filmed.
I recently had the chance to talk with Frank, who tried to avoid a film career and yet is one of the most popular independent grindhouse filmmakers since Herschell Gordon Lewis.
Colleen: How did you get your start making films?
Frank Henenlotter: I just made them. I took my father’s 8mm camera and I graduated to a 16mm camera. I just loved making movies. I never intended them to be commercial. For the past seventeen years, cult director Frank Henenlotter has remained strangely quiet. A few rumors found their way onto a few websites a while back, but they ultimately amounted to a title (“Sick in the Head”) and a rarely updated IMDb page that contained scant amounts of information – nothing more. My ensuing excitement eventually dissipated, and I was sure the man who redefined my definition of horror had disappeared forever into that bottomless world of horror-related obscurity. In fact, it wasn’t until a friend sent me a link to the Facebook page for “Bad Biology” that I found out that Henenlotter was working on something new. What’s more, it was already in the can. Have these years away from the camera dulled the director’s ability to shock, disturb, and entertain? After all, a lot has gone down in the fickle realm of horror entertainment since “Basket Case 3...

Los Angeles, Calif., January 14, 2011 – In the wake of last year’s successful resurrection of Famous Monsters of Filmland, the legendary magazine is proud to announce that it will soon expand its publishing line-up. May 2011 will see the debut of FM Underground, a bi-monthly, dark carnival-in-magazine form that will offer a fun, irreverent take on the horror genre and its staggering pop culture influence.
“This new magazine will feature a more ‘in-your-face’ approach to horror” says Famous Monsters publisher Philip Kim. “FM Underground will bring all the best artwork and writing that readers have come to expect from Famous Monsters and take them beyond filmland for a visceral experience with a razor’s edge tone, and a so-close-you-might-get-smacked look at horror, comics, music, video games, and more.”

What exactly counts as an underground horror movie? Frankly, that’s a tough distinction to make. “Underground” films are generally, by definition, genre-less concoctions. But, if one wanted to use a broad definition of “underground” to mean a low-budget film that didn’t enjoy a large theatrical release, well, that counts for a wide breadth of what used to be called “Direct to DVD” features.
According the website Instant Watcher, Netflix currently has 576 movies available for streaming in the horror genre. The streaming horror movie titles I’m listing below are indeed low-budget films that have flown under the radar because they didn’t enjoy large theatrical releases. But, also, they each have an almost indefinable quality that sets them apart from their peers.
They’re a little more imaginative, particularly for their low budgets. A little stranger. A little more grotesque. Quirkier. More outlandish. However you want to describe them,...

You might have noticed some of my illustrious, talented, and all-around terrific colleagues have set about ticking off their 2010 lists. Never one to miss a chance to throw out an unsolicited (although hopefully compelling) opinion, I thought I might weigh in. This isn't so much a best-of list, as much as a reflection on the last year and some of the films which stuck out for various, particular reasons for me.I think many of the other reviewers on the site have the same lament I've been carrying for the last couple of weeks: 2010 had so many movies and there was so little time to see them all. As of this writing, I still haven't had the opportunity to check out True Grit, Catfish, or give Black Swan the due diligence of a second viewing (if you held a gun to my head for an instant opinion, I'd say it was mostly excellent,...

Creation's Weekend of Horrors is returning to the Los Angeles Marriott Burbank Airport Hotel this October 15-17, and aside from Bruce Campbell, we haven't known who's going to be there. Well, that's about to change as the first group of guests has recently been announced.
Here's who you can look forward to seeing there:
Bruce Campbell
For the last few decades, Bruce Campbell has been one of the most recognizable faces and entertaining actors in genre cinema and television. Besides starring as "Ash" in the Evil Dead series, he's been seen in films such as Spider-Man and Sky High, played elderly Elvis in Bubba Ho Tep and appeared in now-classic (well, kinda) TV series such as "The Adventures of Brisco County", "Jack of All Trades" and "Xena: Warrior Princess". He can be seen now as former Cold War spy Sam Axe in the USA cable series "Burn Notice". Appearing Saturday only.

Old-school genre fans have been waiting for this one for a long time. Now, almost fifty years after Herschell Gordon Lewis ushered in the dawn of a new era in horror films, the wait is finally over and the fans will not be disappointed. Herschell Gordon Lewis - The Godfather of Gore is a loving tribute to a gentleman who single-handedly - and more or less by accident - changed the face of horror films. The documentary begins with a lenghty recounting of Lewis' beginnings in the film industry when he, along with producing partner David Friedman, thought it would be easy money to make 'nudie cutie' pictures - actors and actresses in various states of undress performing mundane (housework, dancing) and not so mundane (riding a turtle!) tasks. Growing tired of the scene but still wanting to make films that would put butts in theater seats, Lewis and Friedman...

"I have a documentary coming out this year on Herschell Gordon Lewis that I did with Something Weird Video, and we.re starting another documentary with Something Weird called That.s Sexploitation ," Henenlotter says. The Herschell Gordon Lewis one isn't a surprise considering Something Weird Video has put out DVD versions of all of Herschell's films including The Gore Gore Girls , A Taste of Blood , She-Devils on Wheels , The Gruesome Twosome , Color Me Blood Red , as well as the original versions of Two Thousand Maniacs and The Wizard Of Gore , both of which...

Cult horror movie directing legend Frank Henenlotter will make a special live appearance at this screening of his latest freak show, Bad Biology. This is Henenlotter’s first feature since 1992’s Basket Case 3: The Progeny.
Fans of Henenlotter’s unique brand of grotesque physical horror won’t be disappointed by this dual tale of a woman (Charlee Danielson) cursed with killing her paramours during lovemaking and giving birth to hideous deformed monstrosities after every coupling and a man (Anthony Sneed) with a killer sex organ that has a mind of its own.
Henenlotter’s first feature film, 1982’s Basket Case, is a beloved cult classic that features outrageous gore and one of horror’s most unique serial killers: A blob-like conjoined twin rudely separated from his “normal” brother’s side. The...

This is a massive week of releases featuring a handful of films even I have to catch up with (not to mention there’s something for everyone in today’s line-up). But enough rambling, on to the goods!
Finally on DVD in the Us this week is the Canadian pseudo-zombie film Pontypool (review, amazon) from one of my favourite Canadian directors Bruce McDonald. Be sure to watch through the end credits! And by the way, the Us DVD cover art is pretty awesome.
Highlander director Russell Mulcahy’s private investigator drama Give 'em Hell, Malone (amazon) hits store shelves. It stars a great cast featuring Thomas Jane, Doug Hutchison and Ving Rhames. Fans of hard-boiled revenge thrillers may want to take a peek at Takanori Tsujimoto’s Hard Revenge Milly (amazon).

Lots of goodies are hitting DVD and Blu-ray this week including the better than it should have been Saw VI, the second installment of Matt Pizzolo's Godkiller: Walk Among Us, Frank Henenlotter's return to form Bad Biology, and our pick of the week, Canada's claustrophobic Pontypool.
Also on tap are some oldies but goodies like Blade of the Ripper and Doctor Death Seeker of Souls, horror/sci-fi hybrid InAlienable, and the original Toolbox Murders making is bow on Blu-ray. For something a little different, there's a documentary on Alice in Wonderland that examines the coming together of the writer (Lewis Carroll) and his muse, the society they inhabited, and their relationship that is still the subject of much controversy, as well as the effect it had on their subsequent lives. Included on the disc are the 1903 and 1915 versions of Alice.

Anyone who really knows me is painfully aware of my unhealthy fascination with the films of Frank Henenlotter, the director behind such cult films as “Basket Case,” “Frankenhooker,” and my personal favorite, “Brain Damage.” His first film is ages, the 2008 psycho-sexual thriller “Bad Biology,” is, perhaps, his most perverted entry to-date. According to Fangoria, Media Blasters is handling the Stateside distribution of the demented filmmaker’s latest endeavor. Having already seen the film twice, I can say with certainty that 16 years away from the camera has not diluted his vision whatsoever. And while it’s not as enjoyable as his “Basket Case” franchise or “Brain Damage,” it’s certainly worth a look for those who enjoy sick, off-beat horror. Here’s a quick synopsis for the uninformed: Driven by biological excess, a young man and woman search for sexual fulfillment, unaware of each other’s existence. Unfortunately, they eventually meet,...
