Badly cut for movie
soleserm29 December 2021
As soon as I reached near the middle of the movie, I wondered why is the action so de-calibrated; it was as if the scriptwriter(s) wrote a script as a contest of "making one twist over another" or was it really a script intended for a mini series. I had to log in to IMDB to justify my second guess.

Silent Hours is a TV mini series -it's PRIMARILY a TV series. For obvious reasons the production team decided to chop it out and make it a 2hr 35mins long film. As it happens with the 99% of similar cases, the outcome was bizarre enough. Took very long for each chapter to evolve, leaving a "hook" in the end which was not followed, until quite later on down the line. All these sex scenes, over and over; this is an exact trace of editing a much longer duration than the one the audience sees. All this constant undelivered suspense which ultimately in some scenes was not concluded or at least be unhooked properly. Last but not least, the edited dialogues in such cases only contribute to confusion in some critical points. I had to roll back 4 or 5 times, to catch up.

E.g. "Alexander" 's theatrical cut was awful, but the director's cut was a movie that made sense. "Das Boot" theatrical cut is poorer compared to the 3,5hr director's cut (the original cut of the film), which is excellent. And so on and so forth.

I found actors good enough for the vibes and atmosphere of the movie - no problem with that. Production was fine too. But I cannot judge anything else on this movie, as I feel I am missing a significant part of the original final outcome.

Would suggest to see the mini series first, then go watch the movie.

Patience reveals the storyline...
imdb-1485028 December 2021
For a porn film, this has a relatively coherent storyline. A supposedly suave private detective possesses an inexplicable ability to cause women to become instantly 'in heat' if he so much as looks at them. Are we to believe he's as intriguing, captivating, and dangerous as James Bond? Actually, he looks more like the guy who tiled my bathroom. But in between all the sausage-hiding, there is a decent story. Just be prepared to dig deep for patience to find it.

Absolutely awful
simonhalstead-1216528 December 2021
I've never written a review on IMDB before but felt compelled to do so this evening, to warn other unsuspecting viewers not to waste their time on this dross. Dreadful acting, cliche ridden plot, over-long, unrelateable characters, cringe-worthy sex scenes, predictable twists, double twist, triple twists (by the end i didnt even care any more. The main character is akin to a 1950's "Man's Man" and whats worse is that the Female characters throw themselves at him like some Bond floozy. Please please pleaaaase don't watch this film.

A TV series turned into a TV movie
ak202026 December 2021
For those who have reported about the length of this TV movie, this was a TV series of 3 episodes first shown in 2017, turned into one movie.

Actually, I think that it works better as three separate episodes. And, you will not guess the ending.

Possibly the worst thing on Netflix
sirens_cry1851 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Set in the early 2000s, but worthy of a misogynistic 70s US TV movie; relentless soft porn (all the women desperate to have rough sex with him, why? ) extreme violence to women and at least an hour too long. Why some excellent British actors were involved is utterly mistifying. The denouement was equally bizarre, the final scene being a wtf?? Moment. Don't watch it to see if it's as awful as the reviews claim, it is.

In the moaning hours
kosmasp7 January 2022
Yes there is quite a lot of intercourse in this movie (that funnily enough seems to also exist as a 3 part series too) - but don't get too excited. Or maybe do, especially considering that those scenes probably will be the highlights for most - no pun intended.

The acting varies if you are being kind. If not you probably will feel every cringe worthy moment ... maybe you can be forgiving, maybe not. Maybe you'll care who did it, maybe you don't. All that does not take away from the fact that something is evidently missing here (no pun intended again) ... and it is not nudity or blood - if that plays a role in your "enjoyment" of this movie ... I may be a bit too nice when it comes to the rating, but that is me mostly. So be wary before you embark on this adventure, because it's likely that whether you predict who did it or not (I think it is quite obvious) or whether you'll even be able to find one likeable character in this ... the one thing that is almost certain: this won't make it to many top 5 lists or will be rewatched by many.

Silent Hours
henry8-31 January 2022
James Weber Brown is an ex naval officer with issues, and now a Private Eye with a penchant for a rough sex. When various women he has bedded turn up murdered and mutilated, the police suspect him and he has to find the real killer.

Once a 3 part TV series and it shows with the first third really badly constructed and with a poor script. It does settle into relative adequacy towards the end if you can believe the fast and furious twists and turns, but overall pretty lame stuff exacerbated by a daft, unbelievable central performance by Weber Brown playing a completely unsympathetic, wooden character who women seem to adore despite the fact he is a total zombie. One or two nuggets, but mostly dire.

Quite long, but worth it...different.
JCinHB4 November 2021
If you have 2 1/2 hours for a who done it flick, I would recommend this movie. It is not a fast pace movie, nor are there any big explosions etc. Keeps you guessing..... you gotta pay attention though. There are a number of hot & heavy sex scenes, I would say its a R rated movie. But it describes it as a TV movie... surely not here in the USA.

I give it a 6-6.5 stars.

Poor acting and way too many sex scenes
Janet161226 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What's happened to British film making?? Bad, Woden acting and unnecessary graphic sex scenes does not a good film make. I've never seen the actor playing the lead before - I hope I never do again. He was so wooden, flat and boring.

The film is too long and the first few scenes are of graphic sex - here's an idea, maybe if they cut the sex scenes, or the scene with the woman in her undies standing at a window fondling herself (what was the point of that?) - or the scene when the wooden actor P. I. has a massage and the wooden actress playing the masseuse tells him a tale of her 'visions'. Had she not been so wooden and boring we may have taken note of what she was saying (she was obviously given the role not for her acting but for two other reasons). When he started pulling down the zip of her coat, exposing her breasts, we both decided that the sex scenes were too much - were we watching a carry on film? We wondered why the information she gave couldn't have been done over a telephone call, thus cutting some of this crap film. Oh but then there wouldn't be the exposing of breasts would there? Silly me.

It was obvious to all of us who the cut up body was in the photos!

The wooden acting, the long drawn out story, the unnecessary graphic scenes made this is a cringeworthy load of crap. NB: a few recognisable British actors, but we all agreed that they'd all lost their acting skills while working on this 'film'. Poor, poor, poor.

Terrible film
prestonsgate7 January 2023
Without doubt the most atrocious film ever.

The "lead man", whoever he is cannot act his way out of a paper bag, the script is truly dreadful, verging on the illiterate and the direction is just comical in its direness.

Don't know when it was made but it's just so dated it looks like the camera work and sexual attitudes of the 1970s.

It goes from one dreadful sex scene to another, rather in the vein of a second rate porno made by a trainee floor manager.

There's some involvement with the Royal Navy, they must have died of embarrassment by now.

It said the release date was 2015, it must have been hidden for years since being made as everything is so dated, both in looks, history, attitudes.

The really awful thing too is that just when you hope and pray it's finished, it's hasn't, it goes bloody on.

Can only assume the director never worked again, please god!

Just don't waste three hours on this, it's AWFUL!

A Solid Thriller
annelouisebidstrup15 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this movie, although I can understand why it wouldn't be to everyone's taste. Particularly the long run time and the fact that it is (or was) once a tv miniseries - that was quite obvious.

I thought the plot was well crafted and you definitely had to stay aware of all the twists and turns, otherwise you'd have no idea what was going on. It's definitely a 'slow burn', which I happen to like in a movie - I know that doesn't always suit Generation "I Want It NOW!"

The lead actor was great! He really suited the character and while 95% of you thinks he's innocent and being set up, the other 5% of me was "hmmm... there's just something not quite right - did he or didn't he?" The rest of the acting was perfectly fine, I always enjoy British TV and movies.

The only thing that drove me insane was the female detective that spent 99% of the film whispering her dialogue, so I was forced to continually increase and decrease the volume. Until the one time she actually shouts unexpectedly in the film and nearly blows my ears out!! Speak up, woman!! I know you're a tremendous actor because I've seen you in a lot of other British and Irish TV, so I have no idea what was going on here.

As for people saying the sex scenes were "pornographic", I don't know what movie you were watching, because I saw nothing of the sort! You saw nothing but boobs and bums, and only for a minute or two. The scenes were also necessary to the plot and establishing the mood.

And lastly, for the woke brigade carrying on about old themes, misogyny and poor treatment of women, IT'S A MOVIE! You, the small minority out there, are the reason why the rest of us can't have nice things. And I say that as a woman.

If you want to spend a lazy couple of hours on a Sunday (or whenever) and still be mindfully engaged, watch Silent Hours and don't take it too seriously. It's a good movie!

Genuinely one of the worst films I've ever seen
lizzsummers30 December 2021
Dear Lord, this was two and a half hours of sheer hell!

  • Terrible script
  • Feels incredibly dated (looks like it could have been made in the late 90s, and not in a kitsch way)
  • Gratuitous sexual violence
  • Awful acting
  • You don't actually like ANY of the characters, so are not emotionally invested in any part of the storyline
  • Creepy, gross protagonist
  • Spoof-esque dramatic music
  • Terrible special effects

Honestly, go and clean the oven or something more entertaining than watching this film.

Sex scenes
ric_downey27 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Other reviewers talk about all the graphic sex scenes in the movie. The reality is disappointing. Despite the protagonist being a hit with all the ladies, he only knows how to fornicate with them in doggy. And you don't get to see very much anyway. Half a dozen heavy thrusts with each one and our hero is spent, collapsing face first onto the bed.

So bad it's annoying.
desimonici-898-5844216 January 2022
Friends of mine watched this and loved it. I watched it on their recommendation just to be polite. I wanted to turn it off after the first sex scene because I felt like this was a B movie using porn actors to flesh it out, no pun intended.

The acting is appalling. The script is laughable. You know that when the lead actor touches blood on a dead body and then wipes it all over the front of his sweater things are only going to get worse... And they did.

As others here have mentioned it is so old fashioned. I mean I hate all these WOKE/PC for the sake of it movies but this is offensive. Utter amateur night dross. And now I have to go away and think of a way of telling me friends what I thought about this turkey without hurting their feelings!

Nice twist
richieklink2 January 2022
Loved this as living in Portsmouth, I could identify all the locations.

The story is a bit of a psychological rollercoaster. Keeps you hooked and as soon as you start thinking you know where it's going, It does a U turn. Then again!

Definitely worth the watch, albeit a bit long at 2.5 hours.

Poor dialogue
paulbakerma613 January 2022
Poor dialogue, ropey acting and unbelievable sex scenes but the puzzle kept me intrigued despite the fact that the direction and script was so poor. Some aspects were clunky, especially the use of a therapist to provide context.

There Seem to Be a Few Prudes in the Audience
tclark5530 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is by no means a very good movie, but it is not nearly as bad as some reviewers think. I enjoyed most of it, but the ending was absurd. The one and two star reviews focus primarily on the acting, the lack of sex appeal of the protagonist, and the sex.

First, the acting was fine. The protagonist is supposed to be subdued and cold. As for his sex appeal, he had actual relationships with two of the women, another woman developed attraction for him over a series of sessions, another woman was older and lonely, and only one, one of the twins, really had sex without knowing him at all (and she could have been playing mind games with him). As for the other actors, they were believable in their roles.

Second, it is an adult thriller. It is on cable and with its rating, a viewer should expect nudity, sexuality, and violence. Have none of the prudish reviewers seen an R-rated movie (or whatever the equivalent rating is in England)? I did not see the mini-series, only the film made from it, and I thought the sex shown was not egregious. Perhaps the mini-series has more? Perhaps it was the type of sex the reviewers were complaining about. Bondage and rough sex were integral to the plot, though. It was an aspect of the murders and it was one of the reasons the protagonist was a suspect.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE: Mainly the ending! The way the film was scripted and filmed caused the viewer to not expect or be able to predict the ending. I had a hunch the killer was who he was, but scenes from earlier tended to make that seem unlikely. It seemed random.

What was the motivation for the killer to suddenly begin his spree? He obviously has been fine for a while, since he knows some of his victims women and has had relationships with them. What is the trigger for the murders?

As for sex and nudity, I say there should have been more! So there!

Clumsy.
jo-344353 January 2022
Clumsy, some very questionable acting in places. A plot which attempts to duck and weave all over the place with lots of twists and turns. The plot is almost trying to be too clever and as such misses the mark on all bases. The main twist being very obvious from early on.

A poor man/womens Angel Heart or Primal Fear. It's actually a real shame because it could have been good with better execution.

The main character felt like a budget James Bond - All the sexism, none of the charm! It just missed the mark in so many places.

Mr. Slice N Dice....
wandernn1-81-68327419 April 2023
Another made for IFC movie.,

Two early dog style scenes with a short glimpse of a naked butt. Then the development of some mystery. A severed head.

A lot of blah blah blah follows. Then we get one girl undressing in front of her window while weirdo watches from outside.

For some reason it seems like every woman in this movie wants to sleep with the weirdo male who likes spying on people thru windows and on cameras.

So apparently weirdo is being set up for murder of various women he's had sexual relations with. And he can't seem to remember what happened.

And they figure it out. And he gets to sleep with his doctor/psychologist at the end. And a little twist goes along with it. +1 Star....

Not Great, but passable. 6/10.

Vile

Gratuitous sex, ridiculous portrayal of women, unnecessary amount of gruesome body parts. Glamorisation of "alpha male" smoking in pubs and using mobile phone whilst driving. Poor indeed.

Super long, a bit dragging, but good.
natalieportlady11 October 2021
The movie will keep you guessing, keep doubting, and shocking. Gory crime scenes and NSFW content... Some scenes might make you throw up. Keep the volume down if you don't want your neighbors to think that you're watching porn 😂

Nonetheless, the movie is great, just very long.

It feels like it was made in 2002, and not in a good way
akpetermann18 January 2022
I am amazed this film was made in 2021. You can play the "bad female representation in movies" bingo with it. The dialogue is wooden and unrealistic. The acting is relatively ok, and the story could be interesting, but sadly, this does not manage to redeem the terribly dragging, dull, dated thing.

Cheap crime thriller
karinahatem18 August 2022
Badly executed crime thriller, silly plot, very poor performance and all those poor cheap sex scenes didn't make it any better. They only had Hugh Bonneville was added as a marketing tool, he only had a 5m role. The story had too many holes and it was so predictable.
