A Quiet Christmas
Prismark1029 December 2023
While Bread was a sitcom that became a ratings behemoth in the late 1980s.

This 1989 Christmas special indicates that it had run out of steam. Maybe Carla Lane felt she was on a treadmill having to knock out sitcom when she had nothing new to offer.

There had been cast changes as the actors playing Joey and Aveline had been replaced.

Whereas in the previous Christmas special the Boswells had taken a trip to Rome. Here Ma Biswell and Aveline have gone shopping at Albert Docks. Only to find their presents have been stolen once they arrive home.

Cousin Shifty has been released from prison and Joey helps him out as Ma Boswell does not want him anywhere around the house.

However she is livid when Lilo Lill rings for Freddie. By which time she cancels Christmas.

At least it was more festive than the previous special. It ends with carols and the Boswells giving their presents to their less fortunate neighbours.

It is Granddad who gets some wistful thoughts as he reminisces about his youth at church.
