Solemn goodbyes
JordanThomasHall29 April 2020
Martin nervously arrives home with news that his publisher has reassigned him to the overseas bureau. To his surprise, the entire family is excited to relocate for an entire year to Paris. They waste little time in sorting through their belongings to pack or place in storage. Since they'll be living in another country, they begin learning the native French language. On the eve of their leaving, Richard tells Patty he's afraid of losing her to someone else while she's away, but her rival looks to move in on Richard. Ross says goodbye to his young sweetheart Nikki Lee and his friends chip in to buy his a Swiss Army knife as a going-away present. The local grocer Popodapolous (Henry Lascoe) gives them a fruit basket and comments how the neighborhood hates to see them leave. Ted tells Cathy the only reason he was directing the upcoming school play was because of her, and she admits the only reason she was going to be in it was because of him. Each interaction mellows the family's excitement as they solemnly prepare to depart.

Predictable, but with a lesson learned. Halfway through the first season the comedy has picked with some light life lessons on gained perspectives.
