The darkest special yet, and it's all the better for it
pugpool102 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's a pretty surreal feeling when one of the very first things you see in the last Distant Lands special is the murder of one of the show's best minor characters. Pretty shocking to say the least.

I wasn't sure how Adam Muto and the usual crew would handle a 49-minute special to a character that superficially doesn't deserve a lot of screen time due to his "one-trick demon" nature, but BOY did they pull it off with grace and tact. Even if we can't relate to Pep's conflict to unlock the true darkness within him, there are shockingly effective themes at play here, including but not limited to dealing with verbal abuse from superiors and how some people aren't who they seem to be. The titular Wizard City itself is a delight to spend time in after years of the original show only grazing its surface, with new and old characters alike all getting at least one moment to shine. It's telling that the special is so engrossing that not one reference to Finn and Jake is needed to amplify it.

Pep himself slowly warms up to Cadabra, who just so happens to be the daughter of Abracadaniel. Their dynamic is so good and is definitely one of the better representations of a formative friendship I've seen in any kind of media.

All in all, 10/10 special. If the post-credits scene is anything to go by then the Fionna and Cake spin-off that's premiering in a couple of years is going to be one heckuva time.

Also as a side note: Bill Hader's character is HILARIOUS and I don't think I've laughed that hard at ANYTHING of that caliber in a long time.

An amazing conclusion to an amazing miniseries!

Warning: Spoilers
After hearing about the news that Together Again would be coming before Wizard City, i was kinda surprised by that and didn't think about it too much. But after seeing how ammazingly well done and shocking it was, i was kinda afraid that Wizard City wouldn't be as good of a conlcusion, but BOY WAS I WRONG! It's definitely a pretty surreal feeling when you understand that we will look at Pep's troubled and dark past to become who he is in the original series, but is also interesting as they do it in the second episode. The city of wizards was something that i found myself interested in learning about and discovering, as the characters were very weird in their good ways. And yet it becomes more surreal as we realize that Young Pep's, also needs to confront with the Pep's we know from the original show, telling him to recreate everything that he has done to become who he is, and apparently create the big Gum War. Seeing this, i definitely felt confused and creeped out, but i tried to understand as the episode went on. Pep's also has some contact with Acabracadaniel's daughter, who slows gets a grip on and becomes friends with her. As the episode went on i started to slowly understand what was happening but i still hadn't connected each piece of the puzzle just yet, let's say i was about 60% complete. Then we get the true villains of this story in the final parts of the episode which are the teachers themselves, and Pep's has to make a choice on whether or not he really wants to become who he was before, he decides to do it to get revenge on the teachers only for him to try and also kill her friend. Thankfully Pep's friend manages to stop him and get him back to normal, and everyone lives happily ever after. This episode perfectly embraces what i wanted the final episode to be: A fun, quirky, curious and emotional story, with a beautiful ending with it's own cherry on the cake. Even if action wasn't fully in this episode, it manages to perfectly inject you into this world and still manage to hook you and give you emotions like the other 3 episodes. Never would expect that Adventure Time could have one amazing gift after 10 seasons and one beautiful and breathtaking ending, with a minsieries that from the first episode to the final one, would make me feel this many emotions and give such awesome stories. Thank you CN for an amazing gift to an arleady amazing show! *kisses* *claps.

Did not enjoy
astaelaine9 June 2022
I really did not like this final episode. It was just so far gone from the original Adventure Times series. I understand that when it comes to cartoons, change is normal, and over time a cartoon will change. The first three episodes of Distant Lands were really good, but they were also different because, again, that's what happens. Wizard city was just so incredibly different in every way. The animation was so far gone that it literally isn't the Adventure Time art style anymore. It doesn't look like Adventure Time. The writing just isn't good either. I kind of feel bad saying all this because I love Adventure Time and I kind of thought that it was impossible for something like this to happen. I also just want to let people enjoy it and not criticize it. I wish I could do the same but I guess I just have a hard time doing that. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you really enjoyed the episode, then just ignore what I'm saying because it's important for you just enjoy the cartoon and not pay attention to negative reviews and harsh opinions. I think that's what matters the most.

Adventure Time will always be my favorite thing in the whole world, and will remain dear to my heart.
