A little uneven at times, but I think Stephen Merchant has found something with this dramedy series. Not a lot of original characters, but a good way to pair them all together and intertwine the stories.

Worth watching.

Episode 1.1

I thought The Outlaws would be a Misfits type comedy from Stephen Merchant.

It turns out to be a hour long comedy drama with dark undertones.

The bottom line is that 7 disparate people get together to complete their community service in Bristol.

The first episode concentrates more on Rani a bright student who is a kleptomaniac. John a businessman who is trying to seal the deal with Chinese investors. He rails against political correctness but just comes across as an arrogant entitled toss pot.

Christian is the young black guy who smokes a spliff on the job and is trying to keep his sister out of the clutches of gangsters.

The first episode wisely did not try to do too much with the large cast of characters. Merchant's nerdy loner Gregory was more in the background.

The show is co-created by Merchant and Elgin James, an American with an interesting background.

Of course the big draw is Christopher Walken as the aged con man Frank. I am intrigued to find out just what he is doing in Bristol.

I did think that he first hour dragged and it might be because it is not an outright comedy. It just felt a little uncertain with tone and overlong.

Episode #1.1

Warning: Spoilers
I have genuinely not felt so attached to the characters of any TV show in a very long time. I was, and still am incredibly interested in finding out what happens to them, what actions they take, and finding out a bit about their backstories. Many of the characters are stereotypes of a particular demographics but none feel generic and boring, all the interesting and all make the viewer want to learn more about them, particularly what crime did they commit to make them end up doing community service.

The actors are all amazing, the plot is genuine edge-of-your-seat stuff. And the jokes, they frequently make me laugh out loud, the old man is one of the funniest characters by far.

Fantastic characterisation

Some great one liners in the show. But more importantly, some really expertly crafted characters who you can't help but feel invested in. Merchant's writing and directing is superb. The cast are fantastic. Overall, 8.5/10 for episode 1!

Brilliantly written, cast and performed

This was a real surprise as I hadn't heard or seen any publicity for this programme. It's laugh out loud funny in lots of places, with a great and slightly dark side. The characters work so well together, so the casting is brilliant, which makes all the difference l; 2 down, 3 to go. The acting is amazing. Enjoy.

TEN!

A ten for a first episode? Damn yeah! From the start, this looked like a good piece of TV, it has the lovely mixture of comedy, drama, love story and good ol' fashion fun. I do hope it keeps going like this, and I do think its will. There are many good acting performances in this, and the story is a gem.

Hilarious!

Just like the title says, it is hilarious. Not in the silly sort of way, but more of a shocking sort of way. It captures a lot strange thoughts and actions that the average person has, and somehow manages to make you see that criminals aren't just simply bad people. Criminals are people just like you and I. We all do bad stuff and sometimes break the law and sometimes don't get caught. I only saw the first episode and missed a few important parts, so I will start from the beginning. Seems like a show that may really hit home.

SIDE NOTE: It looks like the IMDB rating on this is wrong! It says 7.7, but if you count the points and do the math, it should be 8.8. Curious why it's removing points from such a funny show.

Ep 1 had a HUGE error

The Outlaws are all being ankle monitored from 7pm-6am making sure they stay inside their prospective places right? So how come an intense hold-up/robbery with a GUN takes place that involves 2 central characters in the dead of night?? Gangsters aren't home chilling playing video games with the streets outside empty unless it's middle of the night.
