I think it tells a cautionary tale
kcrateau26 July 2022
While I agree with some of the reviews questioning the necessity for this episode and calling it a filler. It I saw it differently. What I imagined is that this storyline and episode shows just how incorrigible Jimmy is and that no matter how the final episodes turn out, that we still know that he will forever remain the dirtbag that we've all come to know and love.

Real Better Call Saul fans will appreciate this episode Warning: Spoilers
In what way is this filler? Gene had to tie up a loose end by making sure Jeffy would keep his mouth shut. Some people are disappointed because neither Walt or Jesse make an appearance. In no way does that make this a bad episode.

This is classic better call Saul at it's finest. Besides the Howard scheme, this is the most effort Jimmy/Saul/Gene had put into a scheme and it was so entertaining to see that Jimmy McGill is still alive.

Different, BUT not bad!
and_mikkelsen26 July 2022
While not as jaw dropping as some of the other episodes this season i still enjoyed it. Its slow, but this show was never known for its fast pace, and i know this episode will serve its purposse for how this show will end, cause the writters never dissapoint.

Not many shows can deliver almost every week. Best piece of writing outside of Breaking bad and Attack on Titan!

Why is everyone acting like this was the finale?
suleymn26 July 2022
I don't understand the mixed reviews, there are still 3 episodes and this was a perfect way to give Gene the Saul itch. We gonna see big things the next episodes, your false expectations are the only reason why you didn't like the episode.

Mutually assured destruction

Warning: Spoilers
First of all, this episode was necessary. Gene had loose ends to tie up with Jeff, and Nippy did it in an inventive and clever way. So, Jeff was actually just a mega fan, and was contemplating entering the game. Jimmy took that information to his advantage.

I really like how the episode goes on. The editing is crazy good, and I don't mind the pace at all. You get all of your acts. The cold open. The set up with Jeff and preparing the scene. When the maximum time is established for the heist, and the boys are ready, you come to your final act, which is a cool little heist, but really nail biting.

The last episode was titled Fun and Games. This episode is literally this. Except with undertones and blackmail. And after all these theories, Nippy is the name of a fake dog. Gotta love it. The showrunners know what they are doing, and there is still three episodes left to book end the series. I trust the process. Nippy is pumping the brakes, while still being a really enjoyable episode. Probably not a 10, but in the mid 9's.

This is not gonna go the way you think it is
Mathi-Juice26 July 2022
A lot of people will hate this episode. I'm reading 'filler' 'the fly of better call saul'. I think the issue is, that we just finished the BCS timeline. Major deaths and important plot points. And when it's time for Gene, it's too slow and different from the rest.

If this was released as the first episode of season 6, people would think 'Wow! Amazing episode, intriguing, mysterious, Gene is back! Etc. Also, they teased Walt and Jesse would be coming back for "a few episodes". The show is coming to an end. People were hyped for 2 iconic characters. Not this week tho.

Well, now we know what Gene has been up to, that he's still Saul and the question remains; What will his fate turn out to be?

I don't mind this episode. Wish they released this one sooner. Or had episode 11 aired as well tonight. I get the frustration, but a solid episode that answers some questions. Sets up nicely for the Gene timeline too.

Nippy
lassegalsgaard26 July 2022
I believe that this was the first season that didn't start out with showing Jimmy in Nebraska as Gene Takovic. Instead, we got that amazing sequence of Saul's house being emptied, and while that was the perfect opening for this season, I will admit that I was missing some of that black-and-white scenery of that Cinnabon that Gene was working at. I was sure that it was only a matter of time, though, before we would actually be reintroduced to that character and spend some time in Omaha, Nebraska, and I thought we might even get a whole episode to do that in and here we are. This season has been an absolute blast so far and it seems like the writers have decided on the best possible way to package this final season and hand us a beautiful sendoff to one of the most interesting characters on television, and this episode almost seems like the beginning of that ending in a lot of ways. I don't think that we're gonna be with Gene for the rest of the season, but the overall feel of this episode is a feeling of finality. I don't know where we're going, but I'm in it for the ride. This was an absolutely amazing episode that brought all the emotions to the table, but also showed that Jimmy hasn't lot his abilities during his time in Cinnabon, coming up with an elaborate plan with a purpose that screams Jimmy and shows that his slippin' side is still hiding underneath.

It felt like this episode brought it all back-to-basic a little bit. Back to the first season, where Jimmy wasn't in bed with the cartel but was simply doing his own thing, swindling people and getting clients through his tricks. It reminded me of the good old days before Jimmy got traumatized by all the events that have formed him and created Saul Goodman, and I think it brought us a good idea of where Jimmy's mental state is. He seems like he's ready to let go of his past and he won't let anybody stand in the way of that.

The writers have never failed to subvert expectations and this episode continues that thread. There are a lot of moments throughout the episode that are done to create tension, and while they are really tenseful, the payoff is somehow always something different, yet just as tenseful. I love how they're able to keep you on your toes, and then take you in a completely different direction, yet keep you where they want you. That's the sign of a good creative team, and if there was ever any doubt that these guys are geniuses, this should lay that to rest.

There's an idea in this episode that Gene is coming back and getting a little bit of his old life back, but I think it's more than that. I think this is an obvious rejection of that lifestyle as we see him saying no to the idea of going back. This may not be the necessary life for him or the one he wants to lead, but he knows that there's no other way. And in many ways, I think he's happy doing what he's doing. Again, it may not be what he wanted, but it is what he gets.

Bob Odenkirk turned on that Jimmy McGill charm in this episode. All his scenes with the delightful Carol Burnett were awesome and showed how Odenkirk can work well with anybody on the screen. As the episode progressed, there was an obvious evolution of his performance, and it seems like Odenkirk knew the evolution that he was going to have throughout the show, and it culminated in this Gene storyline. He has portrayed three different characters through this show, all very differently, yet with those sensibilities of a great actor that enables us to see that this is the same guy.

"Nippy" felt like the beginning of the end in more than one way, and I believe that we're in for something special with the final three. It's going to be a wild ride, and with these writers doing some of their best work, I can't imagine it being anything less than absolutely spectacular.

Gonna be polarizing
pwrrangerdanger26 July 2022
Spoiler free.

They did a great job tying up a loose end from I believe last season. It's a very slow burn episode and I know people will want more to happen in it but I feel a break was needed from all the carnage of prior episodes.

Going to be polarizing for many people. Some will love it and some will hate it.

Can't wait to see what happens with 3 more left to go.

A Little Confusing as to Why This Was Necessary or Why It Was Placed Here, but an Engaging Episode Nonetheless.
MamadNobari9726 July 2022
Obviously, this episode is meant to show that "old habits die hard" and as Chuck said, no matter what, Saul is gonna always be Slippin' Jimmy. But I'm just confused as to why they put this episode after the previous ones and as the 10th of this 13-episode final season. I guess it makes sense that it is after the episode where we take off from the Better Call Saul timeline and jump to the Breaking Bad timeline, but I just feel like this was an episode that should've been. It makes sense that it's here, but feels like it shouldn't. Or maybe we're just expecting to see WW and Jesse again and see big surprises, that's why this episode didn't hit as hard. Nonetheless, it was a good episode.

Anyway, I thought the episode was really fun to watch, especially at the beginning, guessing what Saul is doing. My first guess was, "Is he trying to slowly murder the security guy with diabetus?", then it got more clear what his plan was as it went on.

This episode had some really good tension that also had hilarious moments in them. There is also a good ol' BCS style montage in here too that I really liked.

I'm not denying that this episode felt misplaced or that people won't feel like it's a filler, and I was a little confused on the ending and was expecting more too, but I think people are really overreacting with their 1s and 3s acting like this is the worst they've seen and every episode should have a major character death to be a "masterpiece 10/10 episode".

Enjoyable episode nonetheless, a little confusing, but enjoyable.

Some of the best television I've seen in my life
maorpatiha26 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously how can anybody call this a filler is beyond me. For 6 seasons this show is been building up to this moment, slowly but surly with a glimpse to soul goodman post breaking bad. Giving us just enough in every start of a season. This episode completely encapsulates who soul goodman is as a character. The way he handles Jeff, his very fake but real breakdown in front of the security guard, his longes to his old life it's all there. All that in a masterclass of directing. The heist planing and execution was masterful in editing and everything else. But now we got to this point, all the pieces are in place and the prequel part of better call soul is over. We're in the endgame now. I can't even imagine how this series will end and can't wait for the next episode.

Goodbye
casanovaalex-6496026 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly I haven't been the biggest fan of these 'views of the present' scenes in the past, but now I'm completely won over.

The tension in that simple heist scene could only be amplified cause of how great Vince Gilligan directed every single scene. The fall had me on the edge of the seat, especially since we no longer have the safety net of BCS being a Breaking Bad Prequel, thus the consequences could only be so much in the past.

The ending scene felt so bittersweet too, felt like Jimmy really misses his old life but knows better than to continue.

I'm super excited as to where this journey ends, still praying on a Kim reunion!

Better Call Saul: The Epilogue - Part 1
sallocicero26 July 2022
This episode presents audience with a glimpse into the life of Gene Takavic (Saul Goodman's disguise). Let's just say, that BCS is becoming the best neo-noir presented on screen. And it's also never been more unpredictable. Just when I was predicting everything that would/could happen in this season, all of my predictions were wrong. Only 3 episodes left, and who even knows where this could go!!!

Entertaining, but tonally off
jessemorrison9927 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really want to love this episode, but a few things are keeping me from doing so completely.

The first of which is the tone of the episode. Thus far, every time we've seen Gene in the future scenes, there's been a very specific feeling of nostalgia, of longing for one's past. Not only that, but also sadness, regret, fear and tension. This episode almost feels like a comedy most of the time, and sticks out like a sore thumb, as if it doesn't fit in with that that morose black and white style we've come to love, even if it was only ten minutes per season.

Secondly, the recasting of the Jeff character was very unfortunate. The new actor looks somewhat similar, but doesn't act at all like the previous Jeff we had seen. He seems like a different character, in addition to being a different actor. It's beyond anyone's control, commitments are commitments, but it does ultimately affect my ability to enjoy the episode, even if just a little bit.

Lastly, it was a nice way to explain the whole "I'll fix it myself" thing Gene tells the vacuum guy, but did we really need an entire hour of our final four hours of the series dedicated only to that? I feel like it could've been done a little more quickly.

All that said, I haven't lost hope in the series, and am looking forward to next week's episode. This one still had me tense with anticipation, so it wasn't all bad, just not perfect.

Worst of the season
garyb-8474129 July 2022
This is like that Stranger Things episode that had nothing to do with the overall progress of the show and you told people to just skip this one. We are so close to the end it feels totally out of place. What is the point of the black and white for the entire episode?

Don't ignore this master piece
cmf-200026 July 2022
Instead ignore these fake, although hilarious, reviews.

This episode was a long time coming. When breaking bad first ended and they soon announced Better Call Saul, I couldn't wait for the potential to know what was life like for Saul after he changed identities. Little did I know that I would begin watching the ultimate origin story of Saul Goodman.

This episode reminds us that Saul Goodman is seen in 3 acts. First as Jimmy McGill, then as Saul Goodman, and finally as Gene T. During this episode you are glued to the screen, eagerly watching as you finally witness the third stage of Saul Goodman.

Enjoy the 60 minutes of pure entertainment. Simply a 10/10 experience. The thoughtfulness of the writers and directors don't go unnoticed.

This episode is a cornerstone for the finale to come. I hope you guys enjoyed the episode as much as I did.

I am floored
DjDarkrai1026 July 2022
When I first realized this would be a gene episode I was not Entirely sold, having not cared that much about his previous appearances. The rest of the episode, however, proved to be one of the best in the show and I loved every minute once I was used to it.

This episode contains one of the most nerve wracking sequences in the whole BBU and I was on the edge of my seat for at least half the episode.

Spectacular episode that's just the kind of fun stress inducing hijinks that make this show so amazing!

unexpected
implicxt26 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I can understand why some fans were disappointed with this one, but i personally thought this episode worked extremely well in this season. Firstly, it (seems) to have wrapped up the Jeff storyline, and I absolutely loved the way Gene handled this dilemma. Getting vacuumed again would be superfluous, and having Gene kill Jeff would make no sense for his character. Gene was able to solve his problem by returning to his Slippin Jimmy roots, which was entertaining and even a bit heartwarming. It was nice to move away from the sadness and intensity of the last several episodes. Second, all 6 seasons have been leading up to this. The audience has been waiting all these years for the show to finally reach the Gene timeline, and I was not disappointed. After all, Gene's existence seems to be pretty lonely and bleak. Seeing him be passionate about something, and seeing those glimpses of his past (returning to his schemes, the mention of Walter White, the real emotion he felt while talking about his brother) really helped to connect this timeline to the rest of the show. Lastly, I think this episode's greatest strength was the uncertainty. For much of the show, the viewer has known that Saul has to survive into Breaking Bad, as do other major characters like Gus and Mike. But Gene's fate is uncertain, no one knows what will happen to him. For the first time, I felt genuinely nervous about his character's future. Even though a shoplifting scheme sounds extremely tame compared to other things that have happened in this show, it was still able to keep me on the edge of my seat.

This episode reminded me a lot of the Breaking Bad episode "Fly". Maybe they seem unimportant, but they're not just filler episodes. I think "Nippy" serves an important purpose in this show, and one that will likely become more apparent as it comes to an end.

Odd recasting choice
backslapjones28 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The fact that they recast Jeff the cab driver doesn't bother me, it's the fact that they purposefully changed the character into someone who can be easily tricked and lives with his mom so that the plot makes more sense. The new actor and his demeanor are completely different from the old one, and I feel the writers did that on purpose; he seems submissive and dimwitted, whereas the previous actor came off as cunning and snide. Just picture that loudmouth original guy being so easily tricked into shoplifting... it doesn't work. He was too confident and the last time he was on screen he had saul under his thumb... the next time he's on screen he's a malleable little mommas boy who just wants to pull off a heist (what?). Seriously, HOW would saul just guess this guy wanted to rob a mall in exchange for his secrecy? How many times did saul have to drop in and talk to the security guard before he got enough data to get the average time it takes for him to eat a cinnabon? What the hell did I even just type? Did he stop by there to chat every single day? On that note, this episode had a bit too many cinnabons in it, to the point of a product-placementy level. That security guard could have just not been in the mood for a bun that day... then the plan would have been totally screwed because it hinges on a fat man being hungry for a cinnabon and taking exactly 3 minutes to eat it.

The good parts of the episode are like the good parts of almost every bcs episode; they revolve around the suspense and the ambiguity of the plan as it unfolds. Of course, something has to go wrong because that's what keeps us interested, but the way they play it off with the suspense of a high-stakes game really goes great with the sports commentary.

What the hell is wrong with this fanbase?

"Too slow, unnecessary, boring. Could've gone on without"

Jesus christ, THE LACK OF MEDIA LITERACY IS ALARMING.

For goodness sake's people, just because there are no guns, explosions and action sequences in a episode does not make it bad. The hell do you mean it's unnecessary? Gene had to tie up a lose end so Jeff and the other guy can keep his mouth shut. HOW DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND THIS? It baffles my mind that so called "fans" of this show still can't comprehend that world building, set up, and introductions are a part of writing in television. Beyond disappointing as to how these CHILDREN are reacting to it.

Guarantee you Peter and Vince will prove all of you wrong again in a few, hell, A week.

A great time with classic BCS montages and a scam gone wrong, righted by Jimmy's criminal genius. And the suit tease at the end was amazing. Can't wait for the conclusion of Gene's story.

It's not a filler episode!
vinaywwechampion26 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Only true followers of BCS can appreciate the brilliance of this episode. A glimpse into the life of Mr. Gene when his disguise is exposed by a Cab driver named Jeff. I always wondered knowing how Gene's going to deal with this situation when he refused to take services from vacume guy (Robert Forster). Guess what! Today I've seen an end to Jeff situation. I'm still wondering as Jeff's mother (Carol Burnett) mentioned that his son had some sort for bad connection/influence from Albuquerque.

It was a good episode of better call saul. Finally a gene episode. I'm curious what the rest of the season holds. Some people say its like the fly episode of the show but this was something everyone had been asking for. A glimpse of Gene and how he deals with Jeff. It was good.

Decently enjoyable, but also disappointing
Vlayer26 July 2022
Having this follow Fun and Games, an episode where we see Jimmy's world fall apart and then tragically reintroduce Saul Goodman, makes this episode feel lackluster in comparison.

The plot of the episode is enjoyable in its own self-contained way, but the way it furthers Gene's character is a bit redundant because we've established how he longs to go back to his old life in previous Gene scenes, watching his old tapes and yelling at the kid to get a lawyer.

The core of this episode also doesn't resonate quite as well as it could have, because the somewhat comedic and nostalgic vibes of seeing a scam be executed is contrasted with how awful and tragic the events of Plan and Execution - Fun and Games are.

As its own episode, it's decent and enjoyable. However within the context that it is placed, in the final homestretch of the series, it does feel disappointing.

I really want a mini-series with the story of Gene
igornveiga26 July 2022
I stayed up all night releasing this episode. I honestly don't understand why this episode is rated lower than the previous ones. I think the producers were very smart to dedicate an exclusive episode to Gene, which enhances and gives even greater depth to the character. I don't know about you, but in the first few seasons, what intrigued and excited me the most were Gene's takes, which unfortunately were few. There are still three episodes left, so calm down.

A completely unnecessary episode.
scottsideasare27 July 2022
This is the first time I've been utterly disappointed in Better Call Saul. This episode reeks of being a filler as there is nothing of necessity or importance going on.

Not since the Lost episode showing how Jack got his tattoos have I been so completely bored and been subjected to a pure filler episode. I love this series, but this is an incredible low point for such a previously excellent series. It makes me concerned that the writers have run out of ideas on how to end it. Wexler's departure seemed contrived and unrealistic, and if they leave it hanging on that thread, then the writers have truly pulled a Game of Thrones pathetic series ending,
