Haunting
cattread14 November 2022
An unusual Western more in line with "Deadwood" than anything else I can think of. Or maybe "The Ballard of Buster Scruggs." What makes it work so well are the performances, all superb. Not too long for us. But devastating. Can't stop thinking about it. Very violent and graphic at times--elements I normally avoid; only, with this story, they are warranted. It's difficult to describe what it's about without giving away too much. Mostly it's about two wounded people who find an almost cosmic connection, and it's about survival in a harsh world where almost everyone wants to rob, maim, and kill you, especially if you're a Native American. Beautiful cinematography. The last scene will break your heart.

It lost one star for me because I'm more of a "News of the World" type watcher who craves uplifting endings. This ending does have uplifting aspects.

I'm not crying, you're crying

Holy smokes was this a heart breaking episode. Emily Blunt acts her tail off. Tore at my heart to be honest

This story was riveting till the very last episode. A very touching story. Thai episode was another near perfect episode in a row.

That's all I need to say. The rest is filler for IMDb mandatory 600.

Firefly Set 500 years in the future after a universal civil war, the crew of a small transport spaceship takes any job so long as it puts food on the table. The disparate men and women just want to survive and maybe have better lives, but they face constant challenges on the new frontier, such as the Reavers -- flesh-eating mongrels who live on the fringes of the universe.

Taylor Sheridan, eat your heart out
silverton-3795926 February 2023
This series beats, hands down, any series that Taylor Sheridan has made. He's a good film maker, as he showed with "Hell or High Water", but he can't do a series without dragging it out to the point that watchers realize that there's nothing much there, besides the characters. A tale well told beats hooking viewers into buying a streaming service year after year.

Mr. Sheridan, this is how it's done. "The English" is an engrossing story that doesn't take three seasons to tell. It isn't necessary to spend hours of screen time telling every character's backstory unless your goal is to drag a story out and keep viewers on the hook. Watch and learn, sir. Watch and learn.

Brilliant
tmccheyne20 November 2022
Acting, scenery, photography, storyline all so brilliant. Couldn't fault anything other than I wish we had 8 episodes rather than the 6. I loved the two main characters and didn't want it to end so soon. The baddies, well I wish their ends were worse. Well rounded characters.

I binged watched the episodes over the two nights and could have still watched more.

It makes you so ashamed of what was done by those who emigrated to America, as it does with any country which has been taken over by others throughout history. I understand it's hard to survive but the atrocities that were performed makes you wonder what would happen if we found another inhabited universe. Nothing is ever done in peace.

Shout out to Rafe Spall
gillemorgan28 December 2022
An incredible, brutal, complex story. The main actors were of course amazing. Some great British actors turning up particularly Rafe. What a great role for him! The ending was exquisitely heartbreaking. I would just like to say to those (very few) reviewers who think it's too slow and don't bother to watch until the end WHATS THE MATTER WITH YOU!! Some scenes are a bit hard to take and understand but don't worry, it all becomes clear and well worth it. One of those rare series that I will alway remember and will probably watch again. I've always admired Emily Blunt and she has gone up even further in my estimation! I feel as though I can't say too much more in case I give out spoilers! Loved, loved, loved it.

Timeless
fhzppsbgg20 December 2022
It's like a long western poem written by a master. It's one of the most beautiful and gut wrenching things I've ever seen. You knew from the first few scenes this would be a great work. The writing, directing and acting were so strong. However one of the best role players wasn't a person but a place. The setting of the open west and what this country might have looked like was haunting and beautiful. What we did to the indigenous is also haunting and ugly and beyond sad. This is more an experience than a production. And while the cast was superlative it's the writing and direction that stole the show. It's a diamond set in the roughest of circumstances.

I ugly cried.
amyjo-111111 December 2022
One of the best finales of any show I've ever seen. For some reason, this episode struck me to my core and I sobbed. Like, cried my SOUL out. The script, acting, cinematography, music... it was all just perfectly matched to create this POWERFUL mixed emotional cocktail of EVERY kind of love (friendship, romantic, parental, spiritual, eternal, transcendant etc.) and EVERY kind of pain (letting go, grief, injustice, tragedy, etc.) This episode pulls the entire show together. It is everything a finale should be. The only other show that's ever made me cry like that is This is Us, probably because it takes a similar approach of tying everything together and combining the love and pain of life all at once. Both of these shows remind us that when you combine love and pain, you get meaning and beauty. Basically, what these shows have in common is genius writing. And great acting. Particularly the acting in The English, and especially in this episode... just PHENOMENAL!!!

Wow, this was exceptional.

Lady Cornelia's epic journey across the other side of the world finally yields a reward, as she is confronted with the man who was responsible for the death of her child.

Breathtaking, this final episode was one of the best things I've seen in years. Moving, dramatic, exciting, tense, just about everything you want a good drama to be, and more, this was relentless and powerful.

Good drama entertains you, great drama makes you feel, I felt all sorts here, Cornelia's amazing story finally reaches its end, with some amazing and shocking revelations.

Rafe Spall delivers a quite astonishing performance, he's been great the whole way through, but here, talk about command of the screen. The final showdown between him and Cornelia was an astonishing moment, it sent the hairs on the back of my neck up.

You have to hand it to the makeup team, they did the most sensational job here, talk about realistic.

If only there were more, it's not often a series leaves you wanting more, this certainly did. Thai great series for the amazing conclusion that it deserved.

10/10.

20 minutes too long
xmasdaybaby196613 November 2022
Congratulations to everyone who managed to get to the end.

Did it really need to be an extra 20 minutes long.

The other episodes had been quite long enough.

Even the return of Rafe Spall didn't help.

I guess six months of filming took its toll especially during lockdown.

If they couldn't film in the USA because of Covid rules then why didn't they film it in Blackburn where the first ever Western film was made?

Yes, Spain gives that brooding look but there again so does much of the British coastal area.

The vistas were lovely and made up for a lack in script and poor accents.

I can see why people slapped themselves on their backs and gave it high marks but it as on BBC 2 for a reason.

Not bad but not as good as others are saying.

Entirely unsatisfying ending
katiesewed20 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The show has its ups and downs, maybe because a western show was largely portrayed (and produced) by the English. I loved the interaction between Eli and Cornelia as they gradually found common ground. I truly don't understand the rationale behind the ending though. Melmont gets his just desserts, and the sheriff who was a witness said he could sell it to the local citizenry as long as Eli and Cornelia both left the area. So far, so good. He seemed to have as a condition though that they couldn't remain together. They part, they turn their horses around, and fall back together. That would've been a grand ending. But no, they do part, Eli to his birthplace and Cornelia back to England. As she wanted to stay with Eli, it just seems so illogical for her to give in so easily and leave him, even knowing that her illness would have a horrible outcome. They both knew that she was sick, and accepted the fact. My personal feeling is either have an unrequited love, or have the characters find a way to be together, but don't pull the rug out in the last 5 minutes for what are pretty thin reasons. There was a lot of discussion between the two about home being where you want it to be. I did like the very end where the Indian youth found Cornelia in England 10 or 15 years later. I searched on the Internet for even a half-baked reason why they didn't stay together, and really couldn't find anything beyond the fact that he was an Indian and she was an Englishwoman. Noble warrior stays a noble warrior and the English lady goes home.
