Never one to ignore a trend, iCarly takes on "American Idol," but instead of having the cast-members sing, the crew of Schneider's Bakery hired an actual contestant on this show to play himself, in this case David Archuleta. The only surprising thing is that they had to make up a fictional show as a reference, in spite of the fact that they used the real title in Season One.
Carly, Sam, and Freddie are watching an episode of "America Sings," and David beats an Englishman named Wade Collins, played by Bostonian Alex Schemmer. They all realize that his win is due to their campaign encouraging web-show users to vote for him, but an earlier interview revealing a background sob-story makes them feel guilty. So, they invite him over for a spot on the show, and a music video to be made by Freddie. After their show though, Collins starts to reveal his true colors as the arrogant, selfish SOB he truly is. Yet, they still fulfill their promise to help him out. Gibby is even drafted as a personal assistant, who gladly goes along with his most ridiculous demands.
During the filming of the video, everyone seems to help out, in spite of the fact that the would-be star is a total S.O.B. Carly comes into the studio in a slinky-looking dress, and Freddie's reaction is pure gold, just like the dress she wore, along with some extras. I would've loved to have seen Jennette McCurdy in the same outfit. Instead, we see three anonymous girls, one of which will become famous for a CitiBank TV commercial almost three years after this episode airs.
Freddie's video for Wade's song is good, and what little you hear of the song is better than you can expect. But what fans may not know, is that the song is a REAL song by a band named "Teaneck," and the title is not "Cry Like a Lion." After it's over, the kids find out just how low Mr. Collins will go to get fame and fortune. And on the next iCarly, Carly and Sam invite Mr. Archuleta on the show, and Freddie posts a series of clips showing everyone how despicable this bastard is. I would've loved to see the reaction from some of Robert Crumb's "Ruff-Tuff Cream Puffs" finding out how arrogantly anti-American Mr. Collins truly is. The episode wasn't the car-freak's dream that "iGive Away a Car" was, nor was it the triumphant battle against school bullies and conflict of identity saga that you had with "iMake Sam Girlier," but it was still a halfway decent episode. And one reason is the song "Crybaby," by Teaneck. I highly recommend it.
