Season One Review

Though an intriguing premise, ultimately I felt like "The One" soon became a bit of a chore to get through. I did get through it, which perhaps says something, but if the second season didn't happen to materialise, I don't think I'd be that upset.

The founders of an agency that matches people with their one true genetic love become embroiled in a murder enquiry when the body of their former housemate is fished out of the Thames. Rebecca Webb (Hannah Ware) is the face of the company but faces pressures in the boardroom and a secret about her past that she doesn't want to come out. The investigating Detective, Kate Saunders (Zoe Tapper) is convinced that Rebecca is behind the death, but is distracted by her own genetic match, who is hospitalised following a hit-and-run on her arrival in London.

There's not one thing I can point to about "The One" and say "that's the problem". I'm not even sure if there is problem, per se. Maybe it's that the show isn't interested in the right bit of itself, for me. I wanted to know about the impact that finding genetic matches has on the world, the affect it has on relationships and marriage and life in general. But the show quickly becomes a police procedural, like any other of the thousand shows in that genre - indeed, to the main storyline of the show, the specifics of what they became rich and famous for is irrelevant. Only a tangential storyline, involving a Journalist that Rebecca uses, played by Eric Kofi-Abrefa and his wife, played by Lois Chimimba actual comes close to using the premise to the full.

One or two people in the reviews are teeing off on the performances, which I think it a bit harsh, though I'd agree that nobody is doing anything particularly exciting or noteworthy.

I'll probably come back for a second series, I like Howard Overman's work in general, and would like to support him, but I doubt I'll spend any time recommending this to people.
