When a great Brazilian journalist made a Spike Lee documentary: Black lives matter!
guisreis1 February 2021
Luís Nachbin, who has been my teacher two decades ago, is a great Brazilian video-journalist and documentary-maker. I do recommend you all to search for his short film on traditional sports in Mongolia. Wonderful! Here, he made a "Spikeleeist" doc. He went to three big towns in the United States to shoot images on the Black Lives Matter protests and interview (mostly black) people on structural racism and police repression. The beginning of the movie is quite strong, impacting as much as the most aclaimmed fims on the black question in USA. Afterwards, its intensity oscilates a little, with more tepid moments alternating with some great interviews and statements. Interestingly, the documentry does not idealizes black community, although obviously being fierce on clearly denouncing racist violence. Nachbins gives people the opportunity to talk, whichever are their opinions. While we see black people concerned about the day-to-day oppresion, and youngsters engaging more seriously in politics for the very first time, we can also see people behaving irresponsibly during Covid pandemics, and citizens with quite acritical religious conservative speech ("the problem is that people party, and that is why we need the church..."). Visually, the documentary is also interesting. It is a good contribution to political cinema on the black question.
