Swamp People star and master alligator hunter Troy Landry is the head of the Landry Clan in Southern Louisiana, and is also known as The King of the Swamp. For one month out of the year in the bayous of Louisiana, it is legal to hunt alligators. During this month, the Swamp People cameras follow Troy and other gator hunters around as they try and catch as many alligators as they can. But what else does he do, and what’s his backstory? Turns out he has a lot of other strings to his bow. Troy told Wide Open Spaces in 2014 that outside of...read more...

Wide Open Spaces: Grau’s Arid English Language Debut Misses the Mark
For his long awaited follow-up to his handsomely unsettling 2010 debut We Are What We Are (since remade in English by Jim Mickle), Mexican filmmaker Jorge Michel Grau turns to the American indie scene for Big Sky. But this desert set survival story trailing one teenager’s attempts to overcome the dastardly adults in pursuit of her is as equally ludicrous as another foreign filmmaker’s recent foray into English, French filmmaker Jean-Baptiste Leonetti’s nonsensical Beyond the Reach. Ill-advised and incongruously shaped at every turn, this technically proficient exercise’s greatest faults could easily be assigned solely to Evan M. Wiener’s woefully underwhelming and inconsistent screenplay. But then that would be too easy since beyond the plumes of beautiful desert landscapes, there’s little else of consequence in this simulated genre performance.

Miranda Lambert's "Automatic" won Song of the Year at the Academy Of Country Music Awards, and as soon as she took the stage, the Texas-bred singer passed off the mic to one of her co-songwriters, Natalie Hemby. That in itself was a sweet move, considering the scale of the stadium (nearly 70,000 people in attendance) and the prime time spot on CBS. Then Hemby made her speech, bringing attention to the strength of the all-female team behind the track (penned also by Nicolle Galyon). "I hope I can be your Dean Dillon. Because you're my George Strait," Gamby said to smiling Lambert." "Automatic" was Grammy-nominated earlier this year, for Best Country Solo Performance and for Best Country Song. It's one item on a very short list of Song Of The Year winners at the ACMs that are by women and performed by women ("Wide Open Spaces" by Dixie Chicks is...

Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton and Taylor Swift face off again for Best Country Album two years after losing to Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night." The other nominees this year are Tim McGraw and Kacey Musgraves. Swift has three advantages in this race: "Red" is also nominated for Album of the Year. In this category's eighteen-year history, six of the seven contenders that had also been in the running for Album of the Year won here. The seventh was Shania Twain's "Come on Over" in 1998. While she lost here to the Dixie Chicks' "Wide Open Spaces in 1998, she got a pretty good consolation prize as her disc moved 20 million copies to become the best-selling album of the 1990s. Swift is the only one of the nominees to have won this award already, prevailing in 2009 for "Fearless," which was also named Album of the Year. And "Red" is the...

We're loving the musical evolution of Jamie Lynn Spears.Britney's younger sister is moving full steam ahead on her own singing career -- and last night, she performed her own solo show at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, Georgia. The 22-year-old former teen mom sang a lot of her own original music, plus a cover of the Dixie Chicks' "Wide Open Spaces" and ... most importantly ... "Oops! ... I Did It Again." The "Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeahs" start at about the 2:00 mark. And yes, she did some of the dance moves!"It's Jamie, bitch! My sister has been a big influence on my life, so you gotta throw it back to her, so big round of applause for my sister," she said to the crowd after the performance. Was it very brief? Yes. But it was also more live than her sister has performed it in years! While we...

"Dragon Age: Inquisition," BioWare's hotly anticipated -- by yours truly, at least -- follow-up to the much-maligned "Dragon Age II," is the cover story for this month's issue of Game Informer. As a result, new details are starting to leak out like so many demons from a tear in the Veil.
For example, we now know that "Dragon Age: Inquisition" will be the first game in the series to feature rideable mounts. In a short clip of interviews with producer Mark Darrah and lead designer Mike Laidlaw, you can see a character -- presumably the protagonist inquisitor -- riding a horse through a desert environment.
Wide open spaces large enough to warrant extra transportation haven't been the norm in Thedas -- "Dragon Age II" consisted mostly of cramped and claustrophobic caves and warehouses -- but BioWare has been advocating for a larger game world since the very beginning of development.

Remember how much fun we had watching every single one of Kelly Clarkson’s covers from her Stronger tour?
Well, now that ABC’s singing competition Duets has (mercifully) wrapped, the original American Idol is back on the road for a summer tour with The Fray, and when she’s not recording theme songs for the Dallas Cowboys, she’s serving up more nightly fan-requested covers. Guess what? They’re as jaw-droppingly gorgeous as ever.

Bethesda Game Studios set the bar high with their post-release content for "Fallout 3." Unfortunately, for the first two Dlc packs of "Fallout: New Vegas," Obsidian was clearly having a tough time matching that same level of quality. Both "Dead Money" and "Honest Hearts" had moments of greatness, but as complete packages, they weren't exactly unmissable "Fallout" experiences. "Old World Blues," on the other hand, is just that. Unmissable.
The Basics
Like every "Fallout" Dlc, "Old World Blues" begins with a mysterious radio signal. In this case it guides you to an abandoned drive-in movie lot, and more specifically to a crashed satellite in the middle of the lot. Upon examining the satellite, the world goes white and you find yourself in a medical dressing gown on top of a strange tower filled with socially dysfunctional robot brains. Oh, and your brain is missing. Awkward!

"Batman: Arkham Asylum" was my personal pick for the best game of 2008, so any potential glimpse at the follow-up sends pangs of enthusiasm through my core. Thankfully I got more than a glimpse at this year's Game Developer's Conference, as Rocksteady and Warner Bros. were on hand to show off the latest build of "Batman: Arkham City." It did not disappoint.
Wide Open Spaces
The build of "Arkham City" being shown at Gdc featured a portion of the very first chapter. Batman sits perched on a nearby rooftop when he gets a call from Alfred. Seems that Two Face has taken Catwoman hostage in a nearby courthouse and is preparing to execute her. In the first game, you would've had little choice but to go straight after her, but in "Arkham City," there's more of an encouragement to dawdle.

Despite its post-apocalyptic setting, there's a sense of wonder in the "Fallout" games. A sense of freedom, that the horizon is your oyster and any interesting landmark in the distance is just waiting for you to explore its depths. "Fallout: New Vegas" manages to capture this sense of freedom rather well, and makes for a worthy addition to the franchise, albeit one somewhat marred by serious bugs.
The Basics
You are a courier working in and around the Mojave desert. In the midst of a special delivery, you're caught, bound and shot in the head. "Fallout: New Vegas" focuses on your quest to find out why, and eventually that quest will shape the world around you.
Gameplay-wise, "Fallout: New Vegas" is almost identical to "Fallout 3," save for a few additions here and there. For the most part, though, it's still an action-rpg which allows you to play as a club-swinging brute,...

Variety's report that True Grit will be released on Christmas Day 2010 reveals two things. One - What I want for Christmas*. Two - that Paramount want to position the film for Oscar glory. Maybe their decision making was as simple as "Coens. Wide open spaces. Sounds like No Country For Old Men, bound to get gongs" or maybe they've been sophisticated enough to appreciate how fine the script is, how high-calibre the cast is shaping up to be and how surely Joel and Ethan can handle this kind of material. *UK cinemas are actually closed on Christmas day, so the film won't be getting released here then, anyway.

With Ardal O'Hanlon and Arthur Matthews teaming up for their biggest project yet since the heydays of 'Fr. Ted', Iftn caught up with the pair to discuss, with Ardal, appearing on the big screen in his first cinematic lead, and with Arthur, the inspiration for a script based on building a famine theme park. Sitting opposite the pair in the elegant Dylan Hotel in the leafy Dublin suburbs, as an outsider I can instantly see that this duo have a deep bond and are extremely comfortable in each others company, with the type of friendly ease that develops from knowing someone for many years. Greeting me with the typical Irish handshake, I am instantly drawn into the jovial banter between the two. Many years on from his role as Fr. Dougal McGuire in 'Fr Ted', Ardal O'Hanlon is funny, sincere and very down to earth, whilst Arthur Matthews' comedically gifted personality in reality reflects,...

I love Ardal O'Hanlon, his performance as Dougal in the sitcom 'Father Ted', is one of the best things about 90's, UK comedy. I love Ewan Bremner, his performance in Trainspotting as the junkie, Spud, is one of the best things about 90's, UK cinema. Why then would both actors agree to star in something that feels like the aborted pilot of the worlds most depressing buddy-comedy?
Myles (O'Hanlon) and Austin (Bremner) are best friends, who agree to work on Ireland's first, and only, famine themed adventure park. It's being run by a crooked businessman, who in turn is being funded by an eccentric, video-art obsessed, middle-aged vamp, who takes every opportunity to flirt with both him, and the two lads. They share a tin hut, in which a lot of the film is set,...

Four films have been selected from four different European countries by the Efp strictly for the trade and by invitation only. The only reason I'm posting this is to see who is actually reading it...if you are, let me know. The screening schedule is as follows:

6:00pm: A Town Called Panic directed by Stéphane Aubier & Vincent Patar (Belgium)
With Guest: International Sales Agent Fionnuala Jamison from the Coproduction Office
Sydney's comment: I saw this at the Cannes Film Festival and was astounded at how hilarious and completely absurd it was. No one left the screening room; we willingly suspended all disbelief in what was possible. It is an utterly enchanting Family Film par excellence. It's based on a popular European TV series. You won't even find this title in IMDb! But in Cannes Coproduction Office licensed it to Cineart for Benelux, Optimum for UK, Madman for Australia,...
