Could have been much better
Brin20703 October 2023
"Deliver Us," the 2023 movie, presents a tantalizing blend of cinematic beauty and an intriguing premise, but ultimately falls short in its execution. With a visually stunning backdrop and promising story elements, it had the potential to be something truly special. However, a disjointed and poorly executed narrative left me somewhat unsatisfied.

One of the undeniable strengths of "Deliver Us" is its visual appeal. The cinematography and art direction are nothing short of breathtaking. Each frame is meticulously crafted, capturing the audience's attention with its mesmerizing aesthetics. The use of color, lighting, and camera work creates a vivid and immersive world that draws you in from the very beginning. In this regard, the film is an absolute triumph.

The premise of the movie also offers a unique and thought-provoking concept. It delves into themes that could have been explored in depth, challenging the audience's perceptions and sparking meaningful conversations. Unfortunately, the potential of this premise is never fully realized due to a muddled and convoluted narrative.

Where "Deliver Us" falters is in its storytelling. The plot is plagued by pacing issues, awkward transitions, and a lack of clear direction. It often feels like the movie is torn between multiple narrative threads, leaving the viewer struggling to connect the dots. This disjointed storytelling detracts from the overall experience and hinders the film's ability to engage and captivate the audience.

Character development is another area where "Deliver Us" falls short. While the cast delivers commendable performances, their characters are not given the depth and complexity they deserve. As a result, it becomes challenging to invest emotionally in their journeys, and their actions may appear arbitrary at times.

In conclusion, "Deliver Us" is a movie that possesses undeniable cinematic beauty and a tantalizing premise. However, its narrative execution leaves much to be desired. The film's pacing issues and lack of clear storytelling direction diminish its overall impact. Despite its potential, I found myself unable to fully immerse in the narrative. While it's worth watching for its visual aesthetics, "Deliver Us" ultimately falls short of being the exceptional film it could have been. I.

Stylish with a great opening scene, but that's about it
aronharde5 November 2023
After you have a cold and brutal opening scene that looks really promising I was really interested to see where this movie is going. But a couple of minutes into the story and our main characters are leaving the remote monastery where the movie begins and after that the movie turns really slow and the only horror aspects consists of weird dreams and visions. The whole middle part of the movie was really slow and not particularly interesting.

I really enjoyed the beginning because it was scary, tense and had a great atmosphere and I genuinely enjoy movies with a snowy setting. But that whole second act was just awful to be honest. There are some pacing issues and the movie really loses its momentum after the promising start.

Then towards the third act the movie picks up the momentum again but still the payoff wasn't enough for it to make it a great horror movie.

It is stylish and really well shot and I think this movie could have been a lot better. [5,0/10]

I've never been more disappointed after an amazing opening Act.
Ghost334 October 2023
I don't know what happened here. The first twenty minutes of this movie had me asking myself how I'd never heard of it, much less how it was not receiving an absurd amount of praise in the horror movie community. It was awesome.

And then the rest of the movie happened. The middle was so boring, and almost as if it was written by a totally different person. The ending livened things up a bit but not nearly enough to rekindle the atmosphere and engrossing nature of the beginning.

I give it a 5 because it wasn't awful. I'll probably never watch it again. Had the same passion been put into the entirity of the movie that was clearly placed into the beginning... I probably would have placed it into my top 10 in horror.

Ok campy thrill
sergiy777-21 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The opening scene shocks and occasional gore or sex scene make movie watchable.

Some lines are witty, for instance how nun parry a comment of keeping a mirror in her room. The exorcist priest, his blonde Estonian partner and hunt-loving cardinal are very sympathetic figures. Most likable are the tattoos and slick dream sequences. Estonian forest is picturesque. The story is a somewhat bland but not without occasional witty remark or tense dialogue. So enjoy you cheap thrill ride.

Not sure why Kyiv is in Russia. While a few years ago few would know where it is at all, today everybody knows that Kyiv is in Ukraine. Well, perhaps, an artistic vision or alternative reality where Russia won it's war against Ukraine. Or just some twisted way to travel from Russia to Estonia to confuse evil Vox Dei cultist

Despite few flaw, the movie is stronger than average B series horror.

So slow paced and uneventful that it just wasn't worth the effort...
paul_haakonsen30 January 2024
The synopsis for this 2023 horror movie "Deliver Us" sounded interesting, and with it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, nor actually heard about when I stumbled upon it here in 2024, then of course I opted to sit down and watch it.

The storyline and script, from writers Lee Roy Kunz and Kane Kunz, was okay and watchable. However, the movie is rather monotonous and slow paced, and the narrative is definitely suffering from that. While the storyline is interesting, then directors Cru Ennis and Lee Roy Kunz were simply taking too long to take the story nowhere.

"Deliver Us" is somewhat of a difficult movie to sit through, given the fact that there isn't really a whole lot happening. And I must admit that I was close to giving up on finish watching it, just short of making it halfway through. But I opted to stick with it, hoping that directors Cru Ennis and Lee Roy Kunz would step up and bring a bit more to the table.

However, that just never happened and "Deliver Us" was ultimately an insanely slow paced and uneventful movie. And as for it being a horror movie, well, don't get your hopes up.

Of the entire cast ensemble in the movie, then I was only familiar with actor Thomas Kretschmann, and he was not even in a leading role. However, it should be said that the acting performances from the actors and actresses in the movie were actually quite fair, despite the fact that the script and storyline was so very mundane.

"Deliver Us" was a swing and a miss of a movie in terms of entertaining me. And this is most definitely not a movie that I will ever return to watch a second time. Nor is it a movie that I would recommend for the average horror fan to rush out and get to watch. If you are interested in religious storylines, then you might get a kick out of watching "Deliver Us", but for a casual viewer then the movie just didn't cut it.

This slow burn of a movie just didn't really tickle me in any of the right places.

My rating of "Deliver Us" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.

Good premise, poor execution
pauldmcnally3 October 2023
The film looked like it had a good premise, religious/horror feel to it but overall it was too slow, story all over the place and poorly executed. There was no scares in the film, no twists or turns to make it interesting or pull you in. Just a very basic religious film about God & the devil and the fight against good/bad.

This film should have been so much better and kind of feels lost in they wasn't sure what to do here. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, there is just no real importance, action, scare, acting etc for anyone to get anything from this film. Real let down and a waste of 2 hours.

Artistically beautiful, yet lacking storywise
What-a-Punk2 October 2023
I would say this movie was quite well made cinematically. The picture is crisp and beautiful, the colors nicely match the atmosphere and empower it. Unfortunately, crisp picture is not enough to make a good movie, it lacks in other departments.

First of all, even though characters are stylistically solid, their visuals match their identities, the bad guy looks bad, the lead actresses look stunning, the protagonist looks humble, etc. Still, they are lacking any kind of good background, they are not explored well enough to introduce us to feel for them.

The religion theme chosen is just used together with the most basic plot you can come around. It seems like all the story boxes are checked, but those boxes are for the most straight-forward, basic movie, it's not original in any way. And lack of character development does not go well with that.

The horror part is weak. Which is sad, because aside from the good plot, this is also another very important thing for me in a horror movie. There are some scenes of gore, some soft screamers involved, but I would say that overall, its far on mild side for a horror. Unless, maybe, if you are a very religious person, otherwise I don't see how any part of this movie might actually frighten you.

Last thing, I guess, to which all of the other things mentioned contribute, is the overall sense of sterility of the movie. It looks beautiful as I mentioned, yet at the same time it's so clean, crisp, it feels ice cold. It seems just unnatural for a horror movie. Probably scenes just lack in small details that could add to any natural environments. This also applies to characters, which are all so clean to fit the narrative and picture, but it does look unnatural. Once again, they check all the boxes, and that's beautiful, but they fail to display any depth and any originality within it.

I believe, you would best enjoy such movie on a big screen, ideally in a theater of course where you'd be able to catch all the beautiful sides of it.

Clearly it is made by artists who done their job well. Yet I just want to take this moment to mention how important a good writer's job is. As this movie is a good example.

So, there is a huge difference between a regular artist and a good writer. Artists tend to reproduce the already known thing in their own new perspective (which might be beautiful), yet still is much easier to do in comparison with what a great writer should do - come up with a totally new and unseen thing, while making it seem real and plausible all the way through.

Solid
Tweetienator5 October 2023
Deliver Us got a decent production, a good working cast and a fine visual quality, but, like other reviewers already stated, the script/story is way too predictable and can't provide something really new or too exciting to the genre of what I would brand supernatural horror with a religious theme. The end of the movie is also a rather weak one, at least in my opinion. What else? The level on the horror-o-meter is a mediocre one: a few scenes of gore don't provide more than just a little spicy flavor here and there but not much. Verdict: Deliver Us - solid and decent but somewhat meandering around the level "mediocrity", not bad, not too good either, but that's mostly because of the plot. Okay, if you like movies a la The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Rite, End of Days (starring the mighty Schwarzenegger) also comes to mind. Last note: next time, just deliver us a lil' more and surprising evil ;)

Humble Chills
JoshuaMercott26 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Though it ran like a combination of clichés, the occult-prophecy angles were intriguing in their own right and the overall delivery captivated, thanks in large part to notable performances. I liked the unconventional non-religious direction they took to tell this story.

A dark palette permeated the entire movie, giving it an almost mental-psychological Lovecraftian flourish. The plot featured familiar themes like nuns in remote settings experiencing unexplained phenomena. But the writers took things up a notch and harnessed a sensitive topic to showcase as the main fear factor.

The topic in question was an immaculate conception, in this case attributed to a Catholic nun named Sister Yulia (played by Maria Vera Ratti). Word of the occurrence prompted the Vatican to send in some priests to verify the claim, something that has not happened since Mary birthed Jesus centuries ago.

The twist I most liked featured a prophecy that had been making the rounds in the Vatican's hidden halls. It stated that a woman would birth twins, with one of them being the new messiah and the other fulfilling the soul-ordained role of anti-christ.

Contributing to this portentous milestone were members of a secret society called Vox Dei (Latin, meaning 'voice of god'). They comprised some sort of lost Zoroastrian priesthood. Nobody completely believed Yulia's claim, but when they were proven to be true, the Vox Dei members were first to shun the 'miracle'. They demanded the anti-christ infant be aborted or later assassinated.

One of the opposing Catholic priests was Father Fox (played by Lee Roy Kunz), a Jesuit from the United States. He took it upon himself to save Yulia and her soon-to-arrive infants, starting with ferreting her away from Russia to Tallinn (Estonia). He accepted essential help from his romantic partner Laura (played by Jaune Kimmel).

But the head of the Vox Dei - Father Saul (played by Thomas Kretschmann) - was hunting them. Cardinal Russo (played by Alexander Siddig) was with Fox and Yulia, and together they were trying to understand the prophecy connecting them to the newborn twins, Samuel and Jacob.

Great lore - full marks for that in the movie. Some nice "Omen" and "Shining" vibes added to the thrill factor. The team didn't shy from showing ritualistic nudity and gore, minimally so and only during relevant sequences.

Even though the plot was simple, the story didn't fall flat. The team took a surprisingly safe route to tell this tale, which miraculously didn't end up damning its promising plotline.

"Deliver Us" lived up to its title and delivered us an end-times movie with a handful of basic elements to make its message stand out. Though it won't be competing with some better-dramatized horror titles which released this year, "Deliver Us" still contained a story worth watching.

Good concept, missed execution
redban028 October 2023
I'll keep this review brief. The movie has some gorgeous cinematography; the acting is all right (I really like the protagonist, the male priest); and the concept involving immaculate conception + AntiChrist/Messiah twins is compelling. I also feel the movie's opening act, where the protagonist first goes to see the woman who gives the immaculate birth, was well done: there were some really creepy and suspenseful scenes in the first portion

But the movie quickly loses steam midway. Here, the movie starts dipping into all kinds of visions, dreams, romance-triangles, and premonitions etc. All of these scenes were just more annoying than interesting. And all the horror and creepiness that we saw in the opening act vanishes midway.

Good concept, but a missed execution.

So much better than it looks
cyborgmonkey15 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was hesitant to watch this because the trailer made it seem like it was going to be a b grade horror with bland acting and a predictable storyline, but luckily that is not the case.

It's a decent production, the actors know what they're doing, the visual effects are believable and gory and it has decent plot twists that make it a very enjoyable viewing experience. It's not a scary horror, more like a paranormal thriller.

It starts off strong with beheadings and the making a book out of human skin because the prophecy is passed down from generation to generation and is tattooed on the people that are beheaded.

Inaccurate Ratings In My Opinion
tiskec5 February 2024
A short phrase to describe this movie would be' "dark prophetic catholic horror." It's just that. The cinematography kept the atmosphere a dark aura in a lingering dreamy-like state. This is a horror movie, not a thriller. I think some critics seem to confuse this as them being one and the same, and they are not.

Honestly, I am a sucker for Catholicism/horror. I think the films atmosphere, the characters, and setting all combined to make this one of the best in the category. In most of these types of horror (revolving around Catholicism) the characters, actors, and script usually are all over-the-top, making them eye-rollers. This one actually played out well and was actually believable, without the feeling of it popping out of some kind of comic. The main villain (satanist) was very believable. Again, not over the top and just tense enough to be bat#**% crazy, and not stupid. He was the perfect sociopath. He played his character very well, as did all the actors.

I really liked the dark atmosphere the movie kept consistent with. It really added to a prophetical plot quite nicely.

There is a lot of graphic killings, which is to be expected of horror films. I would recommend this movie over most catholic related horror movies. Just keep in mind, it is NOT a thriller. I would even recommend it to some Catholics. A real Catholic does not fear the devil; unless you're one of those family-friendly, everything is goody type people. Then I would not recommend this film.

With all my opinions out there I thought this movie would at least be above a (5). Broaden your horizons and let a different type of story be told and I'm sure you'll agree with me.

Could have been better
Horror_Flick_Fanatic4 October 2023
Deliver Us (2023) is a religious horror film with stunning cinematography and gore, but a disappointing script. It could have been a better film if the screenplay was better.

The film follows a Russian nun who claims to have immaculately conceived twins. The Vatican sends a team of priests to investigate, but they are joined by affiliates of a secret society with orders to abort both children. An American Jesuit discovers their plan and helps her escape.

The cinematography in Deliver Us is truly beautiful. The directors use light and shadow to create a sense of atmosphere and suspense. The film also features some gruesome gore for the gore hound horror fans.

However, the script for Deliver Us is disappointing. The plot is convoluted and the characters are underdeveloped. The film also suffers from some tonal inconsistencies, switching between horror, comedy, and drama without much success.

Overall, Deliver Us is a mixed bag. It is worth a watch if you are a fan of religious horror, gore, and art house films. However, it is not a keeper for me. The script is too disappointing to make up for the film's strengths.

If the screenplay was better, Deliver Us could have been a truly great horror film. It has all the elements in place: a unique and interesting premise, stunning cinematography, and some truly gruesome gore. However, the script falls short, and the film ultimately fails to live up to its potential.

Aptly titles movie.
piratesinc3 October 2023
There will be no one to deliver you from this movie. Writing a review is something I've rarely done. Each person will view a movie differently. What appeals to one may not another. Sometimes we all can reach a zenith in an experience where it can universally be great or awful. This movie peaks at awfulness. When acting is so atrocious, as in the case of this show, it can be offset by great scene location. Not so here. Only a few locations that are rather bland. Only the end at the ocean was there any good location scenery. If the acting is worthless and production can't afford good locations then maybe the story can redeem the movie. Again, not so here. This movie spends its entire time meandering around pointlessly with its story that it gets lost along the way and tries in vain to rewrite itself as you're watching it. I don't think I've ever seen that done before. And hopefully never will again. There was no passion put into this movie and no love for this show at all. It began to become apparent that the actors regretted ever participating in this show and just got to the point of wanting to finish the job. It's like being at work and watching the clock until the shift is done. The longer you stare at the clock the longer the workday becomes. The longer one watches this movie the more unbearable and frustrating life becomes. No one is here to deliver you from this pile of crap.

Lore was promising, definitely could have been better
jennywithay-2801022 December 2023
The start of the film was glorious, totally intrigued by the lore, but I was frustrated by the lack of attempts to expand on it, which could have helped other story elements be better. It kinda felt like whoever wrote the start to the film was kind of absent afterwards. After a creepy and compelling beginning I was bored and disappointed that this was just another poor attempt at an end of days/antichrist film. It's pretty to watch and at times really has a good grip on catering to a dark and isolated haunting atmosphere. I'm just sorry it wasn't better at scaring me or keeping me interested.

And for anyone who plays Dead by Daylight, keep an ear out for the Huntress's lullaby!

"And that she knows one of them is good and one is evil"
Clintborari22 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really tried to appreciate Deliver Us, but numerous gaping plot holes and an unsatisfactory ending made it impossible for me to give this film a positive review.

The film intriguingly incorporates a wintery Russian backdrop and language, adding an authentic and mysterious touch with devout overtones, which initially seemed promising. Deliver Us delves deeply into religious themes, exploring aspects of Christianity and Catholicism, including the dichotomy of good vs. Evil, sacrifices, and the roles of both priests and lesser nuns.

The positives include nightmarish and grotesque scenes, notably in the opening sequences where a priest cuts off layers of skin from believers, revealing prophetic words and images. This gnarly introduction suggested that the film might push the boundaries into something horrific and startling.

The acting is generally solid, with Thomas Kretschmann as Father Saul, Maria Vera Ratti as Sister Yulia, and Boris Lee Krutonog as a Russian Bishop, all delivering culturally resonant and convincing performances. However, Lee Roy Kunz as Father Fox lacked chemistry with Maria, making their interactions awkward rather than charged with longing or temptation.

I would have appreciated more exploration of the convent's background, some rich history, or even some solid foundation to make the story feel more intimate and grounded.

On the negative side, the plot's religious elements, like a woman birthing both the Messiah and the Antichrist, were surprisingly bland. Additionally, the devil's voice and the high-pitched screeches from the baby failed to convey a supernatural or truly disturbing vibe and felt underwhelming and cliché.

There were also some outright illogical and confusing moments. For example, Sister Sniger (played by Barbara Luhse) puts herself in a vulnerable situation for no discernible reason other than her growing up "these people," which leads to her demise. Furthermore, the brutal police deaths at the end seem more for shock value than impact, as Father Fox's inexplicable murderous rage and subsequent epiphany upon holding the baby in the climactic moment to getting shot by Maria, and then awakening as reborn felt confusing and abrupt-a real "wtf" moment. Also, I'm sure I heard throughout that Maria can be corrupted by sex with a man brining the downfall of humanity but then that seems to occur at the end and those remarks never revisited again.

Overall, Deliver Us is a mix of failed storytelling and confusing plotlines that lead nowhere. Despite having elements reminiscent of films similar to "The Omen," it fails to ever take off, leaving the viewer feeling like they've wasted hours on something that doesn't quite hit the mark and leaves you feeling disjoined and let down.

3/10.

Fantastic premise but a disappointing execution
stevelivesey-3718330 January 2024
This written by a pair Kunz, and it shows. Lee and Kane Kunz to be precise.

This was right up my street, I thought. Immaculate conceptions, warrior priests and nuns on the run, what's not to like? Well, apparently, quite a lot.

This movie doesn't know what it wants to be. An arthouse drama, action thriller, horror?

There is a little too much messing around in a church then giving birth on a train (because yeah, that happens) with no blood, afterbirth, washing or cord cutting. Then a forest.

The dreams were good and quite spooky in parts, the acting adequate, the cinematography good but with poor direction.

Not that good
jackmclaughlin-924087 February 2024
It looked so promising in the beginning. Religious horror movies can be great. "Hellhole" was a recent example of a great one that is truly underrated. This is not an exorcist type which like zombie movies are worn out. Lots of atmosphere here but the story just doesn't come together or provide enough. Yes, it's beautifully shot, although it's visually very dark and seems to be shot mostly at night. This is rather annoying. It is violent too at times. Perhaps they just need better scripts in order to make it work better. Overall, it was disappointing. You never know what you're going to get with this genre.

Good movies are meant to stay with you, and this one delivered
GambitAsiedu6 October 2023
I don't usually put effort into writing full reviews (just clicking the rating stars is all I have time for these days) but given that the Halloween season is here, I'm sure there's a large appetite for a new horror film and could use a good review. Now I certainly would consider this movie, with a plot about the arrival of the Messiah and the Anti-Christ in infant form, deep in the horror genre. And on that alone, it's a great Halloween movie special lots of jump scares. But the questions of faith/morality, and what can make a man "a bad priest, but a good Christian" as gets quoted, are honestly why I think this movie surpasses others. Please go see!

Evil twin, evil kin
This one started off with a really gnarly and intriguing bang. It then pretty quickly slowed down and seemed to heavily rely on audio design for spook and jump scares.

While there were other aspects to the horror than just that, I do think one of the biggest missteps here was the pacing. This was really quite slow and is going to air much more on the side of boring rather than atmospheric or tension building for most I think. Personally, it was on the edge for me and I didn't mind it all too much. I was engaged and entertained for most of the experience.

The acting was just so-so. While he had some good moments, overall I wasn't a huge fan of our main actor as his delivery drew me out of the moment at times. I also think that they lacked on the story a bit here. While it didn't feel crazy original, it was still a solid foundation... it just didn't feel like it really went anywhere. Being a religious horror while dipping its toe into folk horror, there were a lot of opportunities and places this story could have gone but didn't.

I was leaning towards a six but unfortunately the ending was a tad unfulfilling and I think there was just a lot of wasted potential here that knocked it down a bit for me. Regardless, I did still enjoy this and would recommend to someone who doesn't mind a slower pace.

Amazing opening act, but later becomes a Sudo-lord of the rings 😂
khananas-5139927 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The movie definitely had potential, but doesn't live up to it, it had a very interesting premise, but doesn't materialized on it.

The plot: it's a simple plot, where a virgin is pregnant with twins one evil and one good, and the bad one wants to kill the good one as a baby, and he makes people kill the good one.

The verdict: This movie explains a few things very well and leave somethings, like they are not even bothered to talk about it, it leaves so many questions unanswered, which makes you interested at first and you think it will give a second layer the characters, but no 😂 they don't explain or materialize on it! Though this movie is entertaining at times but that's about it.

Steal: the plot of the baby killing the baby is interesting, and definitely a good back story.

Nah
jmarie134911 March 2024
I had high hopes for this when I saw it in on Prime as a new supernatural horror for 2024 and read the synopsis of the return of the messiah and antichrist. This sort of thing is usually right up my street.

But this doesn't deliver. Despite good production, good acting and seemingly a high budget, it just lacks. It is melodramatic and hyperbolic. I found no atmosphere or intrigue. Far too contrived and 'try hard'. I've more enjoyed some of the low budget films like 'The Entity Project' and 'The Atticus Institute ' than this. Trying too hard to be profound but it's very empty for me and the extreme violence and gore are an attempt to make it for it.

This was really really good....ignore the haters!
therealjaysmoke8 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yooooooo this one is for all y'all Religious Horror movie lovers. The thing about this genre that fascinates and pleases me is obviously the Biblical theme. And this is no exception. The movie starts off with a very dark scene which introduced us to the antagonist, the Priest set out to destroy evil by any means necessary. After which we are introduced to several other characters, including a virgin who got pregnant with twin boys, a priest who gave up his priestly duties so that he can go be with his pregnant girlfriend, and the story unfolds. I loved almost everything about this one. Low budget but didn't feel like it. The characters, the settings, the pace, the directing, all spot on and the bloodiness was just enough to keep you glued.

It's definitely not kid friendly, which should be the norm for this genre, I don't understand horror movies that try to be PG.

I said "I loved almost everything" because I didn't like the ending. Which, like most horror movies, felt rushed and without any explanation of how things got there and what was going on. It was like they just had to end it so let's do it. The death of the Cardinal made no sense. What happened to Father Fox that he suddenly turned into this murderous beast? What were the meaning of his premonitions? Why was Laura crying when she held the baby? Why didn't Father Fox throw the baby off the cliff? What made him change his mind? How was he brought back to life? So many questions.

I wonder if there will be a sequel. It would be interesting to see how the boys grow up and how the church tries to stop the evil one.

Pleasantly surprised how non-stereotypical this horror movie was!
Nando4906 October 2023
Sure, religious horror themes aren't anything new, and certain movies (won't name names) just try to be grotesquely blasphemous, not to mention they bleed gratuitous gore from every limb of clergymen and nuns, just to get people talking and Conservatives mad. Deliver Us has gory and sexual scenes, but it avoids old tropes by how skillfully the writing delves into the mind of each character, exploring their belief in what God wants from them, but subverting that belief with questionable ethics. The cinematography captures so much beauty in the Estonian wilderness setting, making us, and the main character realize that the world is worth saving from the threat of the movie's final antagonist, revealed more clearly in an ending I could not have predicted. Please go see!

One Of- If Not- The Best Religious Thrillers In Recent History.

Deliver Us is not only one of the best religious thrillers of the modern era...it's one of the best horror films of 2023.

It tells the story of a Russian nun, who becomes miraculously pregnant with twins- one good, and one evil- by what she claims to be immaculate conception.

Which harkens back to an ancient Zoroastrian prophecy, about the return of the Messiah...and the Anti-Christ.

Which leads her to request the help of an American priest, who is thought have performed a miracle of his own, after he freed a woman suffering from severe mental illness from the demons that were attacking her.

He is a bit of a doubting Thomas.

But, when faced with a series of events that seem to fulfill multiple prophecies, by various doomsday seers...he must come to grips with the role he is meant to play in the whole ordeal.

Which means he is to be the father of these two children...and the partner of their mother.

Making them somewhat akin to Mary and Joseph.

Though...if you pay attention to the underlying message of the film.

They are actually fashioned as Jesus and Mary Magdalene...passing down the Holy Grail, in the form of the bloodline (like is argued in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail).

Which is what makes this film so great.

On top of it's beautiful cinematography.

And the incredible performances put on by the entire cast.

Particularly Lee Roy Kunz and Maria Vera Ratti, in the starring roles.

As they are forced to endure, not only, tests of faith...but their own mental breakdowns, as well.

As they must fight to survive the attempts of a dark gnostic cult to wipe them out, and the mental games being played by the Anti-Christ child...as he tries to get them to kill his Messiah brother.

It has everything a great horror film should have...action, intrigue, nuance, and a fair amount of gore.

So, I'm not sure what the haters of this film are on about.

Because it seems to have a polar effect on people.

Where you either love or hate it.

That being said, however...there is nothing not to love about this film.

It goes full tilt from the very beginning, right through the end...and doesn't let up on the pedal for one moment.

What a truly incredible film.

That is as highly entertaining as it is stunningly shot.

It definitely ranks at the top of the list of horror films this year, alongside El Conde, Infinity Pool, and Evil Dead: Rise.

So don't pay heed to the haters and let this one pass you by.
