"Sufferin' Till Suffrage" provided another entertaining history lesson on "Schoolhouse Rock!'

This is another of these animated shorts from "Schoolhouse Rock!" that was meant to educate as well as entertain using a song for a three-minute segment. Written by Bob Dorough and Tom Yohe and sung by Essra Mohawk, "Sufferin' Till Suffrage" depicts a white gospel singer warbling about how women weren't allowed to vote until the 19th amendment was enacted but that wasn't until ladies like Susan B. Anthony and Julia Howe and others organized protest rallies to get their rights to do so. This was a bit unusual for a segment that aired between various ABC programs on Saturday mornings as it included photos of many of these woman during the pre-1920 era, not to mention the men who kept the fairer sex from their voting rights for as long as possible. Ms. Mohawk is fine with her soulful phrasing and there's a rollicking flavor throughout. So on that note, "Sufferin' Till Suffrage" is right on!
