A fine episode.

Kembleford is once again in the midst of a crime wave, as a killer wipes out locals, the deaths follow an almost biblical pattern.

Very good once again, the first thing I noticed, was this perhaps filmed in UHD? It looked incredibly sharp, very nicely filmed as always.

A really good story, slightly more bloodthirsty than usual, I liked the concept, and loved the characters. It is glorious how time stands still in Kembleford, that cosy enchantment is part of the show's appeal, but even here there's a little progress, with some American culture arriving. Who will forget Mrs M tucking into a hot dog.

It would be nice if there were a few more semi regulars, a few more familiar faces would be great.

I really liked the acting here, some very sincere performances including Ossian Luke and Leon Ockenden, both were particularly good.

8/10.

Its Mrs McCarthys birthday & shes going to "bake like shes never baked before".

Great to see Sid is back & his expression when she says this is priceless ! Theres a new American diner in town. The running joke of Lady Felicia sceaming seems to have been replaces with poor Mrs McCarthy accidentally having something spilled on her clothing LOL. Ive noticed this in more recent Seasons.

Keep in mind this Season was filmed with Covid restrictions in place. This is obvious from from so many scenes taking place outdoors and people standing so far apart. This episode is one of my favorites of Season 9 along with Ep 5 & Ep 10. I hated the later Ep 6 & 7 (overdramatic or lacking major characters) but this one is like the Father Brown show we know & love.

There is a distinct change in prodution values.

I like the rough Sid look and the more cohesive grouping of the principle characters but these jarring, anachronistic set designs. The butcher shop looked like a cardboard front from a high school Music Man set. British Catholics deserve better!

Hot Dog

Warning: Spoilers
Here Mrs McCarthy seems to be tormented by an "avenging angel" and it's not at all fun for her, especially when she is forced to devour a hot dog, yep a hot dog, oh how uncouth according to Mrs McCarthy.

Sorcha Cusack plays Mrs McCarthy, and in fact she is the aunty of Max Irons, so that's quite an acting dynasty. I would love for Max Irons to make a cameo appearance in Father Brown, along with Danny Dyer please.

This was filmed during the pandemic, so all credit to the actors and production staff for coming together to keep Father Brown alive and kicking during a time when the world shut down.

The Viper's Tongue

Mrs McCarthy finds her life is in danger. It is not from the hot dogs that newly opened diner is selling.

Walter Penmark is the first victim, one of several people who is the victim of someone's biblical wrath.

He was a rich man who was cruel to his wife. The second victim was Penny Langdon who liked to spread malicious gossip.

This was a nice mystery with a clever twist.

Although it is odd to see Kembleford suddenly populated by people you have not seen before. It does mean some newcomers are immediately going to become suspects.

Unpleasantly socially au courant

The last few seasons of this once enjoyable series inject anachronistic current values and issues into what assumes are the original stories. The same preachy recasting that turns some people off in Hollywood movies is here as well, if somewhat restrained.

This episode preaches that you should divorce men who throw teacups, and that Mrs McCarthy is a vicious slandered and gossip, typical of the hypocritical church. My impression of her character is that she may have struggled with judgementalism and gossip, but usually came out on the right side of the battle. We are certainly living in an era when such slander of traditional people is fashionable.

The Hateful Witch Still Doesn't Get What She Deserves
jethrojohn4 June 2023
Mrs McCarthy is a racist, bigoted, hateful old witch of a woman that has been responsible for more pain and hardship in this show than Satan Himself and all the murderers combined.

Yet for some reason the show seems to think any sane person would want this witch to live?

I cannot understand how this woman has lasted so many seasons when she's such an evil person.

But oh, she says sorry for ruining a man's life and for causing the death of another, so I guess that's okay then?

I can only guess that the show is watched mostly by Mrs McCarthy's, so that's why she endures.

"Listen to your heart," says Father Brown, while defending a horrible, evil woman.

What sane person gives a flying monkey? Certainly not I.
