In the hot seat
TheLittleSongbird10 May 2022
This struck me as a mostly fantastic episode on first watch, especially the clever story, the suspense and the acting. Despite being underwhelmed by the ending. While my assessments of a lot of 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit' episodes haven't changed on re-watches, there are also a lot of episodes where my opinion changes in both a good and bad way, mostly thankfully good. The premise was very interesting and there are a lot of great Olivia-centric episodes.

Season 11's ninth episode is one of those. My opinion of it is still extremely high and it was fantastic in pretty much every way until a certain point, one of the few highest rated episodes of the season to deserve the positive hype in my view. Season 11 was mostly pretty solid up to this point (despite some underwhelming endings and too much unprofessionalism), but with only two episodes that fit my definition of great. One was this and the other was "Turmoil".

Almost everything is wonderful. It is extremely well acted, especially Mariska Hargitay who always did steel, determination and vulnerability so well and still does (although the show on the whole has not felt the same for a long time). Loved the team interaction, even when things looked bad for Olivia (and a large part of the suspense is that it increasingly looks bad) they were still supportive and clearly care for her. Especially Stabler in one of the few times this season where his loose cannon personality is understandable somewhat.

It is always great to see Munch and he is typically perceptive and dry humoured, loved his grammatical error clip. The script is taut and thought provoking. The story has plenty of clever and unexpected twists and turns, without getting over-stuffed or convoluted, and the suspense factor is some of the season's highest.

Production values are solid and the intimacy of the photography doesn't get static or too filmed play-like. The music when used is not too over-emphatic and has a melancholic edge that is quite haunting. The direction is accomodating yet also alert.

On the other hand, it is not a perfect episode. Its only major fault is the truly implausible big stretch that is the ending, it confused me on first watch and to this day it is hard to swallow because it is so unlikely. It is definitely unexpected, but that is pretty much it when it comes to saying anything good about the ending.

Don't care for Tucker all that much too, he seems too cold somewhat.

Concluding, excellent. 9/10.

Suspenseful episode with an unexpected ending

Warning: Spoilers
I felt that this particular episode was incredibly suspenseful! I found myself getting nervous with the fact that Olivia was being framed and I was becoming more anxious and worried about how things were going to end up as the episode went on. I figured that everything would most likely end well, but after Olivia's DNA was confirmed a match on the murder weapon I had no idea how she was going to get out of that situation. The ending was a relief, however, but I can't help thinking that it was a little out there. I did, however, find it an unexpected twist that I definitely did not see coming. Another little detail that I loved about this episode was that Mariska's real life husband got to be her defense lawyer in the case. I thought that was adorable!

Ingenious and Frighteningly Simple: DNA
yazguloner30 June 2021
The world really isn't what it used to be.

The perpetrator is innocent, but what happens if DNA is confirmed? A complete stalemate. Simple but hard to prove and mess with.

And

Bensler ... so sweettt There are scenes worthy of our two.

Interesting but tests the limits of plausibility

Warning: Spoilers
SVU is known for its complicated and surprising plots and "Perverted" is no different from the norm. Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) appears to the prime suspect in the murder of a bike gang member. Her fellow detectives work endlessly to prove her innocence, even when the evidence against her increases.

It isn't until the final few quarter of the drama that the true killer, as well as the one behind the frame of Benson, is revealed.

The questionable plot element is the means by which the killer was able to make Olivia appear guilty: the use of DNA obtained through fraudulent measures.

Inasmuch as all the shows in the "Law & Order" franchise are based on real-life "possibilities", the premise raises questions about current techniques used in police investigations and judicial actions.

To tell more than that about the installment would be unfair to the viewer; thus, this is one that definitely must be seen by all.

Olivia learns rape cops shouldn't make rape jokes
5-9Hack15 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Olivia is framed for murder by a man she put in prison for serial rape who is out for revenge. He was raped in prison and thinks that Olivia organised it because she told him "a pretty boy like you will be popular in prison."

It's nice to see the show learn the lesson that our heroes shouldn't be happy someone is going to be sexually assaulted. During the confrontation Olivia asks him why he didn't go to the guards for help which is incredibly naive for a detective who went undercover in a prison to find a corrupt guard. It seems like every season our detectives learn a lesson about the failings of the criminal justice that they promptly forget. At least this one sticks as I don't think Olivia ever makes any more prison rape jokes/ threats again.

A thriller
raphaeldesouzacamisao3 April 2024
Unfortunately, season 11 has a bit of a quality decrease compared with previous seasons. This particular episode, however, stands out.

Although, the little court time notwithstanding, the structure is mostly standard as far as the Law and Order franchise goes, the drama around Olivia is well-performed for something different. The plot twists are impressive and many, but generally smooth and coherent.

Themes like framing, dirty cops and biker gangs were well woven into the story. Some further exploration might arguably have made the episode more colorful, but the somber tone is welcome. It all plays out well.

Wooooh 'Perverted' is an SVU Banger
whoneedsascreenname26 February 2024
Boy this episode has everything. Benson & Stabler, Benson & Langan, Benson & Tucker, Stabler & Tucker, Stabler & Benson's Apartment ("let's get you in to bed")

and of course, one of the best SVU lines of dialog in 25 years "Does Kathy know you mortgaged the house for me?" No of course she doesn't know. Stabler just does whatever he does and someday these two will get it together.

Oh was there an episode we were supposed to talk about here? Yeah Benson is framed for a crime she did not commit, all the way down to crooks duplicating her DNA, sending Stabler, Cragen and the rest of squad chasing down a weird (and a little wacky) who-done-it.

Special shout-out to Tamara Tunie, who is extra-extra as Warner in this episode. Whew.

Ending not so realistic
ard_vrk-126 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER ALERT!!

The whole case hinges on DNA evidence of Olivia's that was found on a murder weapon.

It turns out that a DNA specialist had taken Olivia's saliva that was left on restaurant cutlery, amplified it, and then mixed it with someone else's red blood cells (taken from whole blood with the white cells - with the DNA - removed). That way it looks like a sample of blood from Olivia.

OH NO! New technology has made it possible to frame someone with planted "fake" DNA! The End is Near - the Sky is Falling - law enforcement has lost a huge tool in the identification of bad guys!!!!! The thing is, though, is that it was detectable, and should have been detectable not with hugely expensive and lengthy lab tests - it would be as simple as typing the blood. Besides A, B, O and AB (and the Rh factor), there are dozens of other sub-types that could be used to identify, and blood-typing is a test that ANY hospital can do. Hell, my high school had the ability in its biology lab.

ALSO - the blood sample that was planted would also be identifiable as fake since it would only contain red blood cells - no white cells (they'd been separated, remember?) That would only take a simple microscopic observation to find. Any kid with a toy microscope could tell.

So no, it's not the end of using DNA evidence in court. Silly, silly, silly.

Hard to swallow
bkoganbing12 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I looked back to see if the instigator of a frame against Mariska Hargitay had played the same role in a previous episode. The part that Patrick Heusinger did play seemed to recall another episode in which the squad did arrest someone who raped women after giving 'roofies' which took away inhibitions.

In any event the character has done his time and remembers that Olivia that a good looking kid like him would be real popular in the joint. Apparently he was to a certain biker who made him his personal boy toy and farmed him out. Now Heusinger is out and figures a way to kill his tormentor and frame Mariska for it.

But I think what he did was many years in the future, fake DNA which is planted on a bowie knife used as the weapon which sliced him at the privates after he was run down with a car.

That made the episode a bit hard to swallow.
