A stellar group of eight Canadian women directors, along with an ensemble of hand-picked Industry professionals, mentors, actors and crews, have been selected to attend the 19th annual Women In the Director’s Chair (Widc) program, and the two-day pilot session of the Widc Whistler Film Festival Industry Immersion. Over the next two months these rising stars will develop their feature films and web series, while cultivating relationships with industry insiders along with key collaborators, and an ensemble of hand-picked professional actors and technicians. The program culminates with a technical creative master-class at The Banff Centre.
Mounting their directorial debut feature films are, from the Northwest Territories, Kirsten Carthew ("Prototype"), Manitoba-based Rebecca Gibson ("Jane Garbage"), from Ontario, Renuka Jeyapalan ("Sex with as Perfect Stranger"), and Simone Stock ("Dark Horse"), BC-based Kate Kroll, ("One.Last.Stop"), Reem Morsi ("Lips"), and Loretta Todd ("Monkey Beach'), and Pei-based, Jenna MacMillan is developing a new web series, ("Gran Bandit").
“These filmmakers are already established in their own right,” says Carol Whiteman, award-winning Widc producer. “They have won awards and fellowships, some from our collaborating partners like Women In Film, the St John’s International Women’s Film Festival, and the Whistler Film Festival. We all see the talent that these women possess and the potential of their projects.” “I appreciate how Widc supports women’s work and vision,” says seasoned documentary filmmaker, Loretta Todd whose sci-fi martial arts pilot Skye and Chang airs on Aptn. “Being part of Widc Sim 2.O is a significant opportunity to help me be prepared so I can be even more courageous as a director.”
This year's eight directors also benefit from the expertise of award-winning Canadian writer/directors and Widc alumnae, Katrin Bowen ("Amazon Falls," "Random Acts of Romance"), Lulu Keating ("Lucille's Ball," "The Mood Brood") who mentor in Vancouver, Deanne Foley ("Beat Down," and "Relative Happiness" premiering at Whistler Film Festival) at the Whistler Film Festival, and celebrated writer/director Gail Harvey ("Looking is the Original Sin," "Long Story Short") will be the program's Mentor Director in Banff. Canadian director Katrin Bowen follows her first feature Amazon Falls (Viff 2010) with an anti-romantic comedy, about love and all those crazy and obsessive behaviors associated with it.
Random Acts of Romance, which had its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival 2012, revolves around the lives of two couples whose relationships are falling apart.
Newly weds, David(Robert Moloney) and Holly(Laura Bertram) continue to live their monotonous married life rather than admit they aren’t happy and Dianne(Amanda Tapping) and Matt(Zak Santiago), have been together for 5 years yet Matt still doesn’t know what she drinks and Dianne is still the sole financial supporter while Matt is working on his online degree. When Dianne gives Matt an ultimatum, Matt decides he must sacrifice to save the relationship resulting in a surprising turn of events and a chance for Holly to put an end to her unhappiness.

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality.

Hollywood Reporter has a new interview with Kevin Murphy. Among other things, he talks about Caprica and some of the challenges they faced in the second half of the season. The relevant bit:
The Hollywood Reporter: You’ve had some quickly-canceled shows on your resume. What did you learn from them?
Kevin Murphy: In a case like Caprica, I came in halfway into the order. After a week or so, Ron Moore and David Eick promoted me to showrunner and one of the interesting things there was figuring out how to make it grand -- how to make it live up to the [Battlestar Galactica] franchise while being realistic about the fact that the show had ended up costing NBCUniversal a lot more than they had originally expected or budgeted for. Part of that was the nature of the beast. When you’re doing a show set on a spaceship, you...

We attended a great party September 13 @ Toronto's Queen Street West rock venue "The Bovine Sex Club", as Vancouver-based director Katrin Bowen, celebrated the Canada First Tiff screening of her debut feature "Amazon Falls".
The film is described as Bowen's take on her personal 'B-movie' experiences, as a performer in Los Angeles, "...unapologetically exposing the grit behind the glitz of fame..."
Cast includes April Telek as 'Jana', William B Davis as 'Calvin', Zak Santiago as 'Aron', Anna Mae Routledge as 'Li', Ben Ratner as 'Derek',
Tom Braidwood as 'Tommy' and Gabrielle Rose as 'Margaret'.
"...'Jana' is a fading B-movie actress who was famous for her roles in Amazon movies playing a variety of pre-'Xena' warrior-princesses. Nearing 40 she is desperately trying to keep her leg in the B-movie game and decides to pursue her fading career with a zealous fervor. But new roles are elusive and the clock is ticking. Will she...

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. Also on hand will be Bill Gates,...

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. We want it to be a challenge to you [the audience] to see if you can sit and watch it."

Canadian director Katrin Bowen announced on the blog of her next film, Amazon Falls, that its production is over. Besides, the film should be in film festivals.
It tells the story of Jana (April Telek), a B-movie actress. She has made a name for herself by playing "pre-Xena warrior-princesses". However, even though Jane is getting closer to her forties, she still believes that acting in B-movies is the job she deserves. As new roles become rare for her, will Jana throw the towel or keep fighting?
Other stars of the film include William B. Davis, Gabrielle Rose, Adrian Holmes, Lisa Marie Caruk, Gary Chalk, Zak Santiago, Anna Mae Routledge, Tom Braidwood, Benjamin Ratner, Matty Finochio and Alexandra Staseson.
Finally, no release date has been confirmed for this film that was shot in Burnaby, Vancouver (both are cities from British Columbia, Canada) and Los Angeles. Nonetheless, here's a behind the scene clip of the film.
