Missing You paints us a picture of emotional damage that is inescapable. We follow Darius, a man well past his prime, in his meetings with apparent love, Hera. The beautiful Daria Pentelie plays the part of Hera, the embodiment of young innocent love. The love that haunts Darius even in his old days. There is a clear feeling of emptiness, of something long departed from our main character. The great Romanian actor Marian Ralea does a great job in portraying the lonely Darius. Ralea's close-ups could explain the definition of a gazeless stare. There is a certain vulnerability to this character that we can feel throughout the whole film. We get a scene of Darius in his apartment dancing with his jacket which doesn't need a single line to express his sad life. We also see him in a garden and at the bar meeting Hera. It seems we are misled to think that he can control these meetings, but we are later revealed that Hera freely appears in his life, even though he is unable to realize this. She is an emotional scar too hard to heal.
Missing You is masterfully shot. Although this is a short film and we don't have much story to work with, the lighting, music choice, camera moves, and wonderful acting combine to give depth to every scene. We don't necessarily need to know Darius' past to feel his hurting. We are only left to wonder what will become of us and our emotions as we grow old. There certainly is something missing in all of us.
