Great episode

I like this episode - it's the right combination of fun, drama and anticipation of what's to come. Perfect actors. It has a great emotional impact on the protagonists, especially Cordell. Really great.

Characters with Depth

This episode moves the seasonal story ahead, somewhat.

But what it does in an excellent fashion is move the characters along.

The trope of a competition (in this case a town chili cook off) is an old one, but what joy there is in the set up here.

Music, set decorations, local actors as extras? Perfect right down to the band.

They haven't dropped Cordell's PTSD from the barn (good job portraying mental health issues), and we see him still trying to make amends for something that wasn't his fault. But that's who Cordell Walker is now--someone who analyzes past privileges and wants to be his own best self. A man of integrity.

Geri is more family member and less long-term stalker of her former love interest's bf. (Still pouring one out for Hoyt as well as Emily.) That works and reminds viewers why they liked her when first introduced. She's not part of the family and yet when keeping to this lane, she falls back into REALLY GOOD friend of the family.

Micki and Trey have an incredibly angsty moment.

It's frustrating to see her treat him this way and yet she's just in from undercover (and Walker viewers know what that means.) I love this romantic combo and am sorry to hear Lindsey Morgan is leaving. While other actors came and went season one, this is a HUGE one.

The villainous Davidson family (minus Denise) is super fun to hate. Dan is uber creepy and emotionally needy, while Gale is full out b*tch.

Still stealing all the scenes this week? I'd nominate Abilene, played by Molly Hagan. She's the matriarch, the woman who's had true life experiences, the angry protector, the softest hugger.

All the characters are fleshed out and wonderful in this episode. And they moved the seasonal story forward, too. AMAZING STUFF.

I love it!

Great episode, fun, which is a break from the drama of the previous episode but is still loaded with tension for what's to come. All the actors are good. Jared has always given Walker a particular, complex depth: he is a multi-faceted character. Lindsey is also excellent. I will miss her when she leaves.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was so funny bu the drama was on point! Jared and Molly scene was so incredible. I could feel Cordell's pain. And I'm so sad about Micki, she's suffering so much. It was hard to watch her go.
