Post Mortem with Mick Garris: Rick Baker (2010)

**** (out of 4)

Excellent entry in the Post Mortem series has filmmaker Mick Garris sitting down with make-up legend Rick Baker to discuss his career. They start off talking about Baker's childhood and how he started making minor masks. He then discusses his first job, working with John Landis and of course some of the bigger pictures in his filmmography. AN American WEREWOLF IN London is one title that gets quite a bit of talk as Baker explains his original ideas about the make-up and what Landis told him that sticks with him to this day. The Oscar-winning ED WOOD make-up gets a mention as Baker explains he doesn't like to go out after jobs but this is one case where he did. Another case was Universal's remake of THE WOLFMAN, which Baker got. He doesn't go into any details but it just seems as if the final film wasn't what he originally signed on for and it's rather curious to hear his thoughts on CGI. One of the funniest moments in the film is when Baker explains the original ideas for the remake of KING KONG and how he ended up playing the "man in the gorilla suit." Once again, Garris does a very good job letting the guest just talk and he asks some nice questions to keep everything moving. Landis is a wonderful talker as he goes into some great detail and of course has some terrific stories to tell. Fans of Baker's work are certainly going to enjoy this piece.
