Austin, TX – One thing that SXSW attracts are movie stars. With the big premieres headquartered at the famous art deco Paramount Theatre in Austin, audiences were treated to appearances by the legendary Susan Sarandon (“Gutter”), a reunited Cheech & Chong, and for the creme de la creme we were in the “Cage.” The great Nicolas Cage appeared on behalf of “Arcadian.”

Susan Sarandon is an Oscar Winning (“Dead Man Walking”) and ultimate cult actress (the legendary Janet in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”). She made her inauspicious debut in the (naturally) cult hippie film “Joe” and has had memorable roles in “Pretty Baby,” “Atlantic City,” “The Hunger,” “Bull Durham,” “Thelma and Louise,” “Lorenzo’s Oil” “Robot & Frank” and most recently as the voice of Dr. Wong in “Rick and Morty.” She represented her latest star turn...

This is really something special. A movie that resonates with me to such a degree that it is etched upon all that I love within the genre. It feels like a twisted take on a certain Marvel hero who loves to show off his patriotism—and love for his country—through blood, bullets, and even a bar brawl. All he was missing was a vibranium shield. This film involves a charismatic, stone-cold stoic, and reserved antagonist that you sometimes cheer for, even if he has a bloodlust towards innocent bystanders. I would like to defend myself by saying that it’s not just a cult-classic, but a bona fide, badass flick that displays multiple elements of thriller, comedy, action, and horror. It gels together so damn well, that you can’t believe it’s not butter. Today we’re discussing Adam Wingard’s 2014, stranger-danger film, The Guest (watch it Here...

Rolled out of bed at 4:30 today because, you know, Academy Award nominations. You may have heard they were today? Over here at Gold Derby, it’s like Christmas morning and everyone’s birthday rolled into one. And the good news is that I didn’t hear a lot of grumbling about what and who got screwed over but more how for the most part the Film Academy got it right – except for, you know, the ongoing snub of “The Color Purple,” which was evidently a bunch of Danielle Brooks and not much else. I’ll get to that in a moment.
As we look ahead to the March 10 ceremony at the just-because-we-can hour of 4 p.m. Pt, it’s heartening to see that everyone’s focus has officially shifted away from the joint WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of spring, summer and fall to 6 1/2 weeks of delicious anticipation and debate.

Loki scored its biggest tune-in of season two for the week of its finale, rising by almost 200 million minutes over the prior week. That’s the good news.
The bad news for the Marvel/Disney+ series is that despite the jump, Loki still finished its second season well behind the first in terms of viewing time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Kids’ favorite Bluey led the overall rankings for the week of Nov. 6-12, and Friends continued to post higher than usual numbers two weeks after the death of star Matthew Perry.
Loki had 753 million minutes of viewing for the week (its finale debuted Nov. 9), a 34 percent jump from the previous week and its best showing of the season by a wide margin. In a bit of a weird coincidence, actor Nicolas Cage and director Sofia Coppola ended up meeting in Toronto at the exact same time as both were shooting for different films. Talking about the incident, the ‘Ghost Rider’ star called it a sign of ‘good luck’.

Los Angeles, Nov 2 (Ians) Acclaimed actor Nicolas Cage has slammed the use of AI in filmmaking, calling it a “nightmare” while referring to his cameo as Superman in ‘The Flash’. Though initially glad he got to play Superman at least for once, Cage has since then dismissed his cameo appearance.
Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment, the ‘Face Off’ actor said: “AI is a nightmare to me. It’s inhumane. You can’t get more inhumane than artificial intelligence … I would be very unhappy if people were taking my art … and appropriating it,” as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Cage had finally got to play Superman after his 1998 project with director Tim Burton titled ‘Superman Lives’. The cameo showcased Cage as the Man of Steel firing lasers at various enemies, while being de-aged with CGI.
However, given the bad visuals of ‘The Flash’, Nicolas Cage was not that happy with his appearance. While...

How Vince Gilligan And Breaking Bad's Writers Cooked Up A Perfect Final Season [Exclusive Interview]
September 29, 2013. On that Sunday, when the clocks hit 9:00pm Et, over 10 million viewers planted themselves before their television sets, ready to watch a new "Breaking Bad" episode for the last time. One of them was this future writer.
That 10 million strong audience sat awed as story threads — some 62 episodes in the making — were finally tied up in "Felina." Walter White (Bryan Cranston) snatched a pyrrhic victory from the jaws of defeat and made a marginal penance by accepting responsibility for his sins. Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) drove off to an uncertain freedom, ringing out with a primal howl after a series' worth of suffering.
The reviews were stellar, a flood of Emmys followed, and with "Felina" as the cherry on top to an already beloved season 5, the reputation of "Breaking Bad" as one of television's titans was secured. 10 years on from "Felina," Heisenberg is definitely a name that people remember.

Bryan Cranston, Darren Aronofsky, Dean Norris and Better Call Saul showrunner Peter Gould are among those remembering their late colleague, actor Mark Margolis, who died Thursday at the age of 83 after a short illness.
Margolis was a journeyman actor who delivered a memorable performance as the bell-ringing drug runner Hector Salamanca on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. His role in the former, particularly his shocking death in the season four finale “Face Off” in 2011, earned him an Emmy nomination for guest actor in a drama series.

Esteemed character actor Mark Margolis passed away this week at the age of 83, leaving behind a long legacy of memorable film and TV characters. Though while you might remember him from "Scarface," "Oz," or "The Wrestler," it's more likely Margolis' face calls to mind one singularly unforgettable role: Hector Salamanca, the ruthless leader of the Salamanca crime family in the "Breaking Bad" universe.
As Hector, Margolis spent most of his time in a wheelchair with an oxygen cannula in his nose, the character communicating only via a small metal bell like the kind you'd find at a hotel front desk. Despite the fact that his performance was largely non-verbal, communicated through flared nostrils and angry, chiming taps, Margolis actually earned an Emmy nod for his turn as the character in 2012. The performer eventually lost the race for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series to "Justified" actor Jeremy Davies, but...

One of cinema's most illustrious character actors has left us. Mark Margolis, best known for his performance as Hector Salamanca in both "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul," sadly passed away in New York City earlier today at the age of 83. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his death came after a "short illness" and was officially announced by the performer's son, Morgan Margolis.
Margolis may be most recognizable to younger audiences for his acclaimed television role as the head of the Salamanca crime family, for which he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2012, but his tireless work in the industry stretches back to the 1970s. Appearing in films such as 1979's "Going in Style" and Brian De Palma's "Dressed to Kill" in 1980, Margolis would go on to find great success with supporting roles in "Scarface" as bodyguard and hitman Alberto the Shadow, "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" in 1994 alongside Jim Carrey,...

Margolis died Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City following a short illness, his son, actor and Knitting Factory Entertainment CEO Morgan Margolis, announced.
A protégé of Stella Adler who did double duty as the legendary acting teacher’s personal assistant, Margolis also stood out as the Bolivian henchman Alberto the Shadow in Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983); as the gravelly voiced landlord Mr. Shickadance looking for the rent in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994); and, from 1998-2003, as the HIV-infected mob boss Antonio Nappa on HBO’s Oz.

Chris Hemsworth returns to our home screens to redeem himself after the disaster that was Thor: Love And Thunder, but does it work? Hemsworth is the star of Extraction, and he tries his best to make do with what he’s been given, but there isn’t much to go on. Not to say he’s not a great action hero, but at least his ripped body and gigantic-ness make everything he does in these films believable. But that’s not enough to keep a franchise like Extraction alive. It’s especially disappointing because of how good the first part was. There was grit and emotion and some fantastic fight sequences that kept us on the edge of our seats at all times. More importantly, there was a reason to root for Tyler Rake because there was a despicable and ruthless villain against him.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has just about accomplished it all: three Mr. Universe titles, a two-term stint as governor of California, over $5 billion at the global box office…But Arnold hasn’t done something so many major seasoned actors have, which is appear in a Marvel blockbuster. But that doesn’t mean he has entirely ruled it out…
Speaking with Men’s Health, Arnold Schwarzenegger said he would have no problem joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, under one condition: “If the role is right!” Arnold joining the MCU? Now that would kick some ice!
Of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger does have a brief history with superhero movies. The most infamous was his turn as Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin, which, despite its reputation, Arnold isn’t ashamed of, once saying, “I don’t regret it at all. Coke versus Pepsi, Ali versus Holyfield, cats versus dogs, yin versus yang, the Red Sox versus the Yankees, vampires vs werewolves (or should that be ‘swearwolves?), Mac or PC, the Beatles versus The Rolling Stones. Just a few examples of some of the most fierce rivalries of our time but none of the aforementioned rumbles come close to the eternal battle that began a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away – Star Wars vs Star Trek. Throughout the years, killer robots have dominated the silver screen And other mediums such as comics, video games, novels, and even album covers. From Mechagodzilla and Gundam to more niche names like Cyrax and Fulgore, and pleasant androids like C-3Po and the Urkel Bot! Robots have entertained us, frightened us, and given us some of the best friggin’ action us human counterparts could ask for. But there is no doubt that the two most prolific robots that hardwired our imaginations are the unstoppable T-800 from the Terminator franchise portrayed by the greatest action hero of all, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the cybernetically-enhanced police officer Robocop played by the fantastic Peter Weller.
In 1984, director James Cameron became a household name with The Terminator, launching Schwarzenegger’s film career into the stratosphere. James Cameron claims the idea came to him from a dream of a metal skeleton emerging from fire while he was sick with a fever.

The greatest thing about the body-swap movies is that nobody expects anything else from them than being entertaining. Unless they aspire to bring some big message across (bad idea), they are designed to make the audience either laugh or shudder. That said, not everyone has Carl Rainer's ability to make a screwball comedy like “All of Me” (1984), blessed with hilarious dialogues and unforgettable performances by Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin, nor the creepy vision of a body swap penned by Mike Werb and Michael Colleary for John Woo's “Face Off”, with John Travolta in his scariest role so far. It is clear that all of them, be it good or bad use the proved recipes with the same basic ingredients, because what else can you do in a body swap movie, then swapping people in each other's bodies? The opposites always qualify for the plot, and fine seasoning is needed to make it work,...

From classic shows like “I Love Lucy” to modern favorites such as “Game of Thrones” and “Doctor Who,” television has transformed from simple entertainment into an innovative medium for creating intricate stories that engage with viewers on multiple levels.

Nicolas Cage’s career takes a turn for the metatextual in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. The 2022 movie, which also stars Pedro Pascal, incorporates large parts of the actor’s filmography and on-screen persona into an outlandish story about passion, fandom, and a plot to take down an international arms dealer. Director and co-writer Tom Gormican’s willingness to mix reality and fiction didn’t stop with the script. A disagreement between Cage and Pascal over the appearance of a prop made it into the final cut of the film.

The Sopranos‘s Tony Soprano and Breaking Bad‘s Walter White are two of the most memorable TV leads ever. Both are family men who also happen to be criminal masterminds – and murderous ones at that. Both roles made the men that played them, James Gandolfini and Bryan Cranston, superstars and each show are routinely cited as one of the best ever made. But who wins in a battle royale between the two?
In this episode of Face Off, which is written and edited by Matthew Hacunda, and narrated by Shawn Knippleberg, we dive into an all-out gangster war between the two. While Tony Soprano, the head of a New Jersey Mafia crew, may seemingly have the muscle, don’t count out the cold-blooded Walter White. In this face-off, we compare what makes each man such a fascinating anti-hero, with both capable of horrible acts but still maintaining your sympathy,...

This might be a controversial Face Off. Kill Bill is – unquestionably – one movie. Yet, it wasn’t released that way, with Quentin Tarantino’s epic being released in two feature-length halves. In October 2003, we got Kill Bill: Volume 1 and then Volume 2 in April 2004. The wait between the two films felt eternal. Still, both were well-rounded enough that you had a satisfying cinematic experience after watching each movie on its own, even if (technically) it was only half a film.
Ultimately, the decision to split it into two films was brilliant, with the first movie making $180 million worldwide and Volume 2 earning $152 million. Together that added up to a pretty hefty grosser for the early 2000s, and one must imagine that the DVD sales of each were huge. While we never got the long-promised Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, if you watch one of the movies, chances are you’ll watch the other.

Pedro Pascal is really feeling the heat.
This week, the star of “The Last of Us” and “The Mandalorian” appeared on “Hot Ones”, answering questions while eating some very spicy wings.

Taking his first bites, the actor joked, “I wonder how much of this is gonna get caught on my astonishing moustache.”
Asked about working with Baby Yoda on “The Mandalorian”, Pascal shared how lifelike the puppetry is on the creature, to the point that it wasn’t difficult for him to get emotional during certain key scenes.
“This puppet is making me cry,” he laughed.
Pascal was also asked if, now that he’s worked often enough with heavy costumes like his Mandalorian armour, if he can’t help but notice that on other actors when he’s watching a movie or show.

Nowadays, it seems as though the world is coming to an end every three to four months at the movies. This is mostly thanks to the preponderance of superheroes at the multiplex, where every villain has a plan to destroy our planet, if not every planet. But for a while there, the world coming to an end was a slightly more novel idea; it was usually left up to Bond villains to threaten humanity’s very existence.
In the 90s, however, the entertainment value of witnessing our own extermination started to pick up steam at the box office and the more memorable ones had civilization looking down the barrel of annihilation. You can probably credit Roland Emmerich for this. In 1996, his Independence Day reignited our passion for seeing large-scale alien-invasion-style mayhem inflicted upon the populous. If you weren’t around back then, or are too young to really remember it,...

Face Off journeys into the Future for an epic battle: Demolition Man vs. Minority Report!
We’ve seen many different and iconic visions of futuristic societies in film, from the distinctive fire-belching skyline and perpetual rain of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner to the towering chaos of New York in The Fifth Element. There’s the grimy concrete of Dredd’s overcrowded Mega City One, the utopian domes of Logan’s Run, the vibrant cyberpunk metropolis of Akira’s Neo Tokyo, and who could forget the hoverboards and holograms of Back to the Future Part 2’s more pleasant Hill Valley circa 2015. Huh, it’s weird to think that all Back to the Future movies take place in the past now.
But for this episode, we’re going to visit the worlds of two other well-known sci-fi/action movies that, perhaps surprisingly, share a few similarities: Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report starring Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell,...

When Christopher Nolan took over as the director of the Batman film franchise, he promised to ground the characters in a real-world to show how these super heroics would actually work. While that promise may not have ultimately come true, his Batman trilogy did put a great cinematic spin on the world of the Dark Knight. Two of Batman’s biggest foes in the Nolan universe were the Joker, played magnificently by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, and Bane, played by the great Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises.
They both proved formidable foes for the caped crusader, but how would they stack up to each other? Each possesses unique skills that test different aspects of Batman, Joker with his intellect and unique way of getting under the skin of the Dark Knight, while Bane has a more fleshed out backstory and sheer brutality on his side. When John Carpenter’s Halloween was released over forty years ago, the premise for the movie was pretty simple — a madman escapes from a mental health sanatorium, and on the way back to his hometown, he robs a hardware store, taking a 2 William Shatner mask as part of his loot, and proceeds to brutally murder three teens without remorse, mercy, or even a clear motive. Now four decades old, the franchise is ever expanding and has seen installments that range from being fairly badass to unforgivably bad. It has branched off into multiple timelines, a few reboots, featured a young Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle in The Curse of Michael Myers, and it even veers off at one point to feature a crazed mask maker who attempts to murder all the children in the world using mystical pieces of Stonehenge. While the quality of the overall franchise can be debated,...

While Rian Johnson made his feature directorial debut with the criminally underrated Brick, it wouldn’t be until 2019’s Knives Out that the filmmaker would really get the chance to fully play around in the murder mystery genre with a proper budget. For now, we may have Robert Pattinson as our newest iteration of Bruce Wayne aka Batman, but it wasn’t the first time the character has been given a dark, gritty reboot. That honor is held by Christopher Nolan’s 2005 film Batman Begins, which singlehandedly saved the franchise from its rubber-nipple-induced isolation brought on by Batman & Robin. Then in 2008, superhero movies were radically changed forever with the gargantuan release of The Dark Knight, which took the goodwill earned by Begins and pushed the envelope in every conceivable way.
After delivering one of the best films of all time featuring an Academy Award-winning portrayal of the Joker by Heath Ledger, Nolan was faced with the truly impossible challenge to top The Dark Knight and complete the journey of Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne. In the 1980s, there was no comedic force in the movies quite like Eddie Murphy. Rising to fame as one of the most prominent members of Saturday Night Live when he was still in his early twenties, Murphy became a sensation thanks to his perfect comedic timing, his infectious laugh and smile, and his effortlessly cool screen presence. Some people just have the ‘It’ factor, and Eddie had it and then some, and 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop remain two of his signature vehicles.
While not every movie of his in the 80s was a winner (we’re talkin’ to you Best Defense and Harlem Nights), his track record was pretty darn impressive. And with all due respect to Coming to America and Trading Places, the two movies that best exemplify Murphy at the height of his charisma are 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop – the first one, obviously.

It’s scary movie season! Well, for some diehard horror fans that’s Every season, but one thing that horror film buffs and the casual movie-going crowd can agree on is that The Shining is arguably the best horror movie of all time. We’ve seen it so many times it’s basically a comfort movie at this point. Based on the novel by prolific author Stephen King and adapted by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, the film stars the incredible Jack Nicholson delivering some of the most disturbing and intense acting ever put to celluloid! What more can we say about The Shining that hasn’t already been said?
Fast forward nearly 40 years later to 2019, Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep hit theaters but underperformed at the box office. The long-awaited sequel to The Shining based on the 2013 novel of the same name stars Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor, playing an adult Danny Torrance.

Gangsters, in general, are not the kind of people you want to land on the bad side of and the genre is as old as celluloid itself with some incredible films demonstrating just how brutal their world is. Look away from The Godfather if you’re a fan of horses (or James Caan for that matter), behold the various and frequently shocking headshots in The Departed, Casino’s torture by vise, or even the brutal double death by baseball bat in the same movie. It’s a wonder why we find these characters so fascinating but that’s just the thing — we love ‘em!
Over the last few years, the genre has seen some more intriguing installments, but among the many movies featuring gangsters, there aren’t many that can be hailed as true classics. The Irishman was an interesting if slightly flawed return to the genre for Martin Scorsese,...

In 2018, actor John Krasinski showed the world his directing chops with the release of A Quiet Place. A horror film revolving around a family in a post-apocalyptic America that has been taken over by monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing. Krasinski enlisted his real-life wife, Emily Blunt, to play the pregnant mother of the family along with, in an inspired piece of casting, deaf actress Millicent Simmonds to play the family’s deaf daughter. After a buzzy marketing campaign, the film was released to massive critical and commercial success. This was quite a shock for the vast majority, as most didn’t think Jim from The Office would have such a masterful command over this genre! He had some directing experience under his belt with a few episodes of The Office and a little-seen film called The Hollars, but nothing to suggest he would be so adept at crafting a big-budget horror smash hit.
