The Super Bowl is a collective television event like no other. Not only do the night’s ratings inevitably top the year, but everyone is actually gathering together at the same time to watch live. Next weekend, the great sport of advertising gets down on Sunday with the Super Bowl (there will also be some kind of game happening too). As always, companies are opening up their wallet to get in on that game day audience, and usually means ad agencies hiring big name talent to help them out. And even Joel and Ethan Coen aren’t above working for The Man.

On Monday, July 26, famed rock producer, manager, and lyricist Sandy Pearlman died at the age of 72. His Wikipedia page says he "was the recipient of 17 gold and platinum records." He managed that despite not actually producing many bands, or even albums -- but he left a big imprint on every one he worked on.
Born in Rockaway (Queens), NY in 1943, he got a college degree at the State University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island in 1966.
A year later, still in the Stony Brook area, he recruited a band so he could have a series of science-fiction poems he'd written (the Imaginos saga, about a group secretly controlling world history) set to music and performed. He named the band Soft White Underbelly after Winston Churchill's epithet for Italy, but changed its name to Oaxaca after Soft White Underbelly got a negative review at a big concert.

There are two different ways to come at the trailer for "Zoo," CBS' upcoming summer event series based on the book by James Patterson: One, is to take it as seriously as a thriller with extraordinary elements. The other is to embrace the show's premise — "Whoa, so all the animals get sick of us humans, and rise up to attack? This is a real show? On a major network?" — and look forward to seeing how ridiculous it might be. We'll find out for sure in a month, which approach is most valid, but for now get a glimpse at what happens when animals stop being nice and start being... animals. Featuring a soulful cover of "Born to Be Wild" (because every trailer, these days, is required to use a soulful cover of a popular rock song), "Zoo" promises lots of animal-on-human violence and James Wolk with a healthy amount of facial scruff.

What's It About? Cineastes and fans of war movies will dig this drama that uses real WWII footage in this tale of a young soldier headed to D Day. Sounds simple, but it's pretty heavy, and the unique use of real war footage adds to the narrative.
Why We're In: With Kubrick collaborator John Alcott as the cinematographer, a spiffy restoration, and loads of extras, "Overload" is a good addition to your collection.

There have been many wildlife documentaries released into theatres over the last couple of years, but Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is certainly a highlight among its peers. It follows Dr. Patricia Wright, an accomplished American primatologist, anthropologist and conservationist who has been instrumental in helping to save lemurs from extinction.
The movie documents how the lemurs first arrived in Madagascar millions of years ago as castaways and how nowadays, they are an endangered special. For those who aren’t familiar with the animal, it’s a real eye-opener and will no doubt leaving you wanting to learn more. Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is also beautifully shot, showing off both the lemurs and their environments in stunning IMAX 3D.
It was a privilege to talk with David Douglas who directed Island of Lemurs: Madagascar. David is a cinematographer and director who has given us a number of great documentaries including Fires of Kuwait,...

The nature documentary, invented by Walt Disney himself and maintained, in the years since, by various filmmakers, philanthropists, and causes, has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, mostly thanks to the annual DisneyNature documentary that focuses on some exotic (but still cuddly) aspect of the animal kingdom. This year's entry, in theaters later this month, is "Bears." But that doesn't mean that Disney, founder of the genre and pioneer since, has cornered the market on the nature documentary. In the fallow years between its invention and the recent initiative, the best nature documentaries were typically seen in large-format IMAX theaters. Together with Warner Bros., IMAX released documentarian's David Douglas' genuinely gripping monkey tale "Born to Be Wild" in 2011, and that same team has reassembled for this week's enthralling "Island of Lemurs: Madagascar."Narrated, like breakout nature documentary "March of the Penguins," by Morgan Freeman, "Island of Lemurs:.

Golden voice Morgan Freeman narrates Island of Lemurs: Madagascar, a documentary about the endangered species on one of the most unique islands in the world. I was honored to interview the legend about this upcoming movie!
Q: You've narrated Born to Be Wild and now Island of Lemurs. What attracts you to these types of projects?
Morgan Freeman: Well, I'm interested in trying to bring light to the fact that we're killing everything on the planet. We're turning everything on the planet into food for us, and what we can't eat and is in our way, we just push it aside, we're intrusive on everyone's habitat, we're destroying the oceans, we need to talk about it a lot.
Q: You've once said that movies are so important in educating the public.
Morgan Freeman: Movies and television are probably the most effective way to get the word out because everyone's watching it.

Morgan Freeman, during a press tour for the fantastic "Now You See Me" with Michael Caine, apparently fell asleep while being interviewed by a Fox affiliate station in Seattle.

Chicago – Blu-ray was made for nature documentaries like “Born to Be Wild” and “Frozen Planet,” both recently released on the HD format and on DVD. As “Chimpanzee” plays in theaters and “Frozen Planet” still holds places in some DVRs since its Discovery Channel airings, nature documentaries seem to be as big as they’ve ever been. Both of these are strong entries in the popular genre.
To be fair, they serve different purposes. “Born to Be Wild” is more for the little ones or the whole family with its G rating and sweet focus on the positive impact that we humans can have on the natural world. Where “Born to Be Wild” is a perfect entry for kids with short attention spans (the IMAX movie runs 41 minutes), “Frozen Planet” is for those looking for something a bit more dense and challenging (you could fit “Born” into its running time of...

If you needed a voiceover narrator to nail it into your head that you’re watching a every important documentary here, it’s Morgan Freeman or bust. That’s a given, right? The Oscar-winning actor returns in another voiceover gig, this time on Warner Bros.’ family-minded documentary “IMAX Born to be Wild”. It’s a heartwarming and inspirational look at the lives of orphaned elephants and orangutans rescued from certain death. Yes, it’s sugary as all get out, but it’s also incredibly uplifting and inspirational, and it might just make your kids think. Heck, it might make you think about your actions, too. “Born to be Wild” now arrives on DVD and Blu-ray courtesy of Warner Bros. on April 17, 2012. Narrated by Academy-Award® winner Morgan Freeman, Born to be Wild 3D is an inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. This film documents...

Jakarta, Indonesia — One of the orangutans starring in the IMAX film "Born to Be Wild" has been treated to a special jungle screening in Indonesia – and was captivated until the trumpet of elephants scared her off.
The documentary follows two women who have devoted their lives to caring for orphaned animals – Birute Galdikas in Indonesia and Daphne Sheldrick in Kenya.
Initially, Wednesday's screening on Borneo island was going to be held outside, but rain forced everyone into a hut.
Producer Drew Fellman said Thursday that Siswi – the daughter of one of the first orangutans Galdikas cared for – sat in the doorway and was engaged for the first 15 minutes.
But Fellman said that once the elephants arrived and started getting boisterous, Siswi got uncomfortable and ran off and climbed into a tree.

A new film from Warner Brothers and IMAX tells the courageous story of orphaned orangutans and elephants, and the humans who care for them.
"Born To Be Wild," which is narrated by Morgan Freeman, opens January 9 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
Sadly, conservation efforts for these orangutans may be needed now more than ever. Recent research found that villagers in Indonesian Borneo have killed more than 750 orangutans over a yearlong period. Indonesia is home to 90 percent of the world's orangutans, according to AP.
HuffPost blogger Jamie Bechtel writes, "While the findings of the research are terribly sad, they are not terribly shocking."
Orphaned elephants and orangutans aren't the only baby animals receiving special care. In eastern Australia, a group of nearly one hundred orphaned fruit bats were rehabilitated with blankets and bottles last month.

[1] As Salt director Phillip Noyce weighs the options for his next move, one long-gestating project has begun to pick up steam. Late last year, Noyce took over the helm of My Wild Life (formerly titled Our Wild Life), a drama based the real-life story of Kenyan elephant conservationist Daphne Sheldrick, and Nicole Kidman began circling [2] the lead role this past spring. As Noyce and Kidman got busy with other things, however, My Wild Life seemed to fall by the wayside. But Kidman is now officially attached to star, and with Mandalay Pictures working on getting the rights from New Line, the biopic could be hitting theaters during next year's holiday season. More details after the jump. My Wild Life has been in the works since last year, with Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) originally slated to direct. However, he jumped ship and eventually sued New Line for not letting him direct...

An obvious but deserving choice, the amazing trailer for David Fincher's "The Social Network" walked away the big winner at this week's 12th Annual Golden Trailer Awards in Los Angeles. On the off chance you didn't see it, here it is:

Life In A Day (12A)
(Kevin Macdonald, 2011, Us)
Compiled from amateur submissions of what people all over the world did on 24 July 2010, this documentary sets itself an almighty challenge. It's fashioned into some sort of narrative order, with recurring themes and music, and moments of emotion and illumination, which saves it from becoming a random global channel-surf. But you could say the subjective "direction" and homogenising technical treatment are at odds with the democratic intentions.

If you lucky enough to ever find a fairy godmother, you couldn't do much better than Daphne M. Sheldrick, 76, who runs an elephant nursery on the edge of Nairobi National Park - or indeed Birute Mary Galdikas, 64, who runs her Orangutan Care Center a world away in the baking hot jungles of Borneo. Born To Be Wild, the new Imax 3D film that explores their life's work and brings these two remarkable women together, closely follows their decades long fight to raise and protect orphaned baby elephants and orangutans in captivity and then return them to the wild. Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman, this unmissable film shows us the animal orphanages the two women built in Kenya and Borneo to care for their vulnerable - and often terrified - young charges. When a baby elephantÕs mother is killed, the baby loses its tutor and protector; it will have...

Movie Review of African Cats narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, directed by Alastair Fothergil and Keith Scholey. African Cats, based on the title alone, is more fine-tuned in subject matter than its DisneyNature predecessors Earth (2009) and Oceans (2010). African Cats’ real-life lion and cheetah characters, who have names, evolve over the course of the film, their inter-family drama and interactions with the world described with a light and simple narrative geared primarily toward kids. (“The savanna is the greatest schoolyard.” “To Mara, he’s the best Dad ever!”) All of DisneyNature’s films pale though in comparison to that leviathan of nature infotainment, BBC’sPlanet Earth series, and African Cats is slower than Warner Bros.’ 40-minute-long Born To Be Wild, which inspires constant oohs and ahhs with its 3D/IMAX indulgence in baby orangutan and elephant cuteness. (Despite a G rating, it doesn’t shy away from the harshness of nature,...

Born to be Wild is not a feature so much as a forty-minute exercise in maximizing the inherent cuteness of animals. Nearly every shot is specifically designed in an attempt to make viewers misty-eyed. Still, the IMAX documentary is more than successful in provoking the desired emotional reaction, despite its obvious methods.
Of course, adding to the adorable factor is the sad plight of the subjects themselves. Documentary filmmakers follow elephant expert Daphne Sheldrick in Africa and orangutan authority Birute Galdikas in Asia as they help raise newborns that have been tragically orphaned and face certain death – the sad results of poaching and human development. Viewers watch as the two lead efforts to nurture the animals until they are ready to be set free into the wild once again.

After numerous weekends of consistent growth, things began to slow down for Jane Eyre and Win Win. Playing at 247 locations (up 67 from last weekend), Jane Eyre was down five percent to $1.16 million, while Win Win inched up a percent to $1.15 million at 226 locations (an increase of 77 over last weekend). The movies have so far made $5.15 million and $3.43 million, respectively, and their chances of reaching nationwide release dimmed.Warner Bros.'s latest IMAX movie Born to Be Wild opened to $856,133 at 206 locations. That's over twice as much as the studio's previous IMAX release, Hubble 3D, though that only debuted at 39 theaters. No Eres Tu, Soy Yo, Lionsgate's latest attempt to reach out to Hispanic audiences, grossed $588,938 at 226 theaters in its first weekend. That's way off from their last Latino-focused movie, From Prada to Nada, which opened to $1.12 million in January. It's a weekend of good and bad for Russell Brand. The comedian's "Hop," where he voices the character E.B., continues to dominate box-office for the second-straight weekend with $21.7 million.
Meanwhile, his new live-action comedy "Arthur" failed to beat "Hop" and debuted at No. 2 with $12.6 million in 3,276 theaters. Younger viewers liked the film, but the older crowd could not help but compare the remake to the far-superior 1981 Dudley Moore original. ("Arthur" Movie Review)

While growing up in the late Sixties to early Seventies, one of the favorite television shows in our house was Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with host Marlin Perkins. We loved watching wild animals in their natural habitat along with the challenges faced by Perkins and his field correspondents Jim Fowler and Peter Gros. Similar in nature was the classic film Born Free (1966), which told the story of female lion cub Elsa raised to maturity by a Kenyan game warden. Elsa is re-educated so that she can be released back into the wild. Both Wild Kingdom and Born Free left out the violence experienced in the wild, a pattern followed by IMAX documentary Born to Be Wild.

While spending 40 minutes listening to the smooth tones of Oscar winner Morgan Freeman is enough to endear an audience member, adding über-adorable primates and pachyderms makes “Born to Be Wild 3D” an outing for which it’s worth babysitting your sister’s kids.
Focused on two incredibly courageous and compassionate women, Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas and Dr. Dame Daphne M.
