Half of the season
greenylennon2 March 2011
After the great episodes focused on Mini and Liv, here comes a more relaxed episode about Nick, the character I less cared about. Nick is a rugby champion, he's cool and he has a girlfriend his team mates would die for. But, at home, the situation is not so great (just watching his father for a few seconds may help supposing what's like living with him). We're done with the first half of the season and plot is tightening up, while some new elements are introduced, for example I think Franky will be involved in Liv/Matty's storyline, and Mini is gradually changing and maybe she's gonna be the most transformed character next season, as it happened with Katie Fitch in the previous generation. This is a transition episode and there is not much more left to say.

Good, but cliche ridden.

Nick is the big everyone wants to be,to know and to look up to, he's handsome, adored, rugby captain and sorted.... He's also one of the clichés Skins tends to avoid, why is the rugby captain in every TV series gorgeous and popular, it just isn't like that, where are his potato ears? Clichés apart, it's a good episode, the weakest of the season but still enjoyable, Nick is perhaps the least interesting character, but Matty and his dad (strong performance from Dorian Lough) are hugely interesting, and perhaps explain why Nick is like he is. I did like Alistair McGowan, his South African accent was great and he made the coach a decent character. Nick's sudden realisation that he hates rugby and never wants to play again was a little far fetched.

Decent Buildup

I think this season isn't what many expect when it comes to Skins, in some ways that's good and in some ways that's bad. We have more dramatic and even soapy moments that feel more realistic than they do pertaining to the characters some times, and there's many well orchestrated iconic moments that steal the screen alongside music choices that fit like a glove... the characters can be pretty interesting but I don't feel we've had much more than an introduction to them until this point. Nick felt like he was going to be a side character at first, same goes with his brother, however I love the storytelling here, the writers dove head first into it and it feels so raw and real in the way I love about Skins... moreover, Sean Teale's acting here is absolutely superb and I can't say I was expecting it. There's some really relatable moments in here for some one like myself who wasn't particularly a jock in high school, Nick's dad is an a-hole and I think I relate to this odd dichotomy as well. I'm really looking forward to what this season and generation brings out at this point. Also, am I the only one that noticed that it looks like Nick lives on the same block that Effy and Tony did?? Idk the housing looks the same and I can't help but think the writers did this on purpose haha.

Nick - The Jock

Warning: Spoilers
Nick is in the locker room. The camera is inside his locker. He is a star athlete. Skins has been avoiding clichés until this season, showing "types of high schoolers".

Once the rugby team finishes one boy says last one to the showers is homo. The coach coaches the team standing in the middle.

At home their father has made a contract for Matty saying he cannot bring girls to his room, etc. Before their father leaves he reminds Nick he is better than Matty.

Nick realizes he doesn't like rugby and its problems with it.
